JJB05
New to open, still waiting on my gun. What distance do you folks zero your dot? Heard on a podcast that Christian Sailer zero's at 7 yards.

kujo929
I like 12yds. Makes for a relatively flat trajectory. Easy to shoot good groups at. Still on a plate rack size target at 50yds so more than good enough for Uspsa size targets. Close range offset is not bad. racer-x
I zero at 50 yards (also zero at 20). Dialing in at 50 yields a precise zero and confidence. SeattleDude
I use 20 yd zero as well. But I shoot 3 gun primarily. Works same in USPSA too. Just have to know your hold overs.

verla
18 yards has been a good zero distance for me- shoot 124 gr bullets going at 1390 fps- gives good hits on plate rack at 50 yards- good hits on standards at 50 yards.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: I zero at 18 yards but know where it hits at 3-50 yards. Thanks, Eric

shred
Used to be a top-of-the-dot zero at 18 yards was the magic number that would keep shots within an 8-min C-more dot from ~12 to 50+ yards. That was determined when we all shot vertical C-more Serendipitys and 50 yards was a thing you could expect at matches, so maybe it's changed a bit, but it's still a pretty good place to start. zzt
25 yards. I know the holdover at close distances and I don't have to worry about anything between 15 and 70 yards. Some course designers DO take advantage of the 100 yard pits.
Rich406
A lot of this can depend on your projectile velocity and height of your sight over bore. I Played around with an online calculator when I picked my zero range. http://www.shooterscalculator.com/ballistic-trajectory-chart.php?pl=[Preset+Name]&presets=30-06+Springfield~30-06+180gr+Sierra+Matchking~G1~0.475~180~2750~100~1.5~0~10~90~~0~59~29.92~50~1~1000~25&df=G1&bc=1.6&bw=147&vi=900&zr=18&sh=1.5&sa=0&ws=0&wa=90&ssb=on&cr=1000&ss=5&chartColumns=Range~yd%3BElevation~in%3BElevation~MOA~FBFFF5%3BElevation~MIL%3BWindage~in%3BWindage~MOA~FBFFF5%3BWindage~MIL%3BTime~s%3BEnergy~ft.lbf%3BVel[x%2By]~ft%2Fs&lbl=[Chart+Label]&submitst=+Create+Chart+
Jeremyc_1999
More important than the "perfect" zero distance is knowing what your trajectory is. I would suggest when you chose a zero distance, then you shoot in 1 yard increments from 1 yard to 50 yards
sauza45
25 yards but I know where it hits at 5 to 50 yards. I only have to hold over about 1'' inch at 5 yards .5 at 10 and then I am good out to 50. Edited January 23, 2020 by sauza45
AverageJoeShooting
15 yards. Out to 50 yards you are never more than an inch away from the hit
