Rvajma
Was having extraction issues at a match yesterday and pulled aftec at home. Was cracked and holding on by a minute thread between the springs. Looks like metal failure to me. On a 9mm open pistol with about 2k from previous owner and another 1.5k from me. Thoughts? Are these warrantied, and is it transferrable?
Sarge
I would definitely contact them about it. They should be hardened I believe. I have two in different guns with many thousands of rounds. Springs and cap have broken but good to go otherwise
Silverscooby27
I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way, so here goes....It’s 85 bucks, dude. Just buy another one. Welcome to Open. $$$$$$$$$$$
dapribek
I don’t know if it will be covered, but I’d certainly contact Aftec. Mine has 15-20 thousand rounds with no issues. Looks like a defect to me.
yigal
There are rough signs of "tuning" and bending on this extractor. probably from the previous owner simple 20$ spring steel tuned extr. will do this job much better.
Sprig
I broke one in the exact same spot . I sent it to them asking for a exchange . Their reply was ' we need to send this for testing ' , never got a replacement . Good luck

So, it'd end up being probably the same cost as just getting a replacement aftec
Silent
Wow I thought the whole point of an Aftec is that it wouldn’t break like a normal extractor...
yigal
This is what happens when you change shape to a rigid bar. "tune" Some survive and some do not. Edited February 11, 2020 by yigal
muncie21
Nice diagram Yigal, I get it now, when I 'tune' the extractor is cusses as me in greek.
RGC
I put 150k min on one. Simply changed it because it was one of those things that just created doubt and kept me waking up at 2am screaming ... well not really that bad. I change springs on my birthday but keep it clean as buildup in the extractor chamber places stress in areas not intended when then tool the steel and grain direction. You have to keep things clean in there and about 1-2k rounds, take it out and clean it all up. To the OP, this is the wonder of buying used. You just never know how many rounds really went through that gun. "2k from previous owner". I seriously doubt that.
ltdmstr
AFTECs are pretty hard steel. They're not supposed to be bent, like a standard extractor. That's why the springs are there. If it was bent or modified, that's probably when it cracked. Just took a while before it actually migrated through and failed entirely. It's a terrific product when used as intended. jim vaughan
Unfortunately every once in a while one is forced to bend Aftec extractors. I recently had to bend two 9x23 Aftec's to fit new Caspian slides. The case rim wasn't even touching the extractor hook. 0.4 mm change did the trick. Fortunately they are still working. BoyGlock
I bent one to make it reliable in super and rimless comp. Worked and still works after thousands of major rounds.
Hi_Im_Vinh
Mine broke at the tip/ claw not so long ago and when I contacted Aftec the owner took care of it right away and sent me a new one .
sauza45
I have had to bend one to get the right tension. It has been running great so far.
valerko
mine didn't break , but was literally worn out . Ended up getting standart SVI extractor .
