tomv
I'm thinking about building a 22 cal upper for my AR15. I'd be intersted in approaches others have taken to accomplish this. Link to comment
stango424
I use the complete rifle from these guys but you can also build around your own parts with their barrel and bolt. https://www.2a-arms.com/category-s/197.htm Link to comment
aandabooks
Buy the S&W M&P 15-22 for $350ish and cut out all of the magazine/feeding problems. Link to comment
TeedOff
I’m using a CMMG complete upper on a polymer lower (less weight). Works great with the cmmg magazines and also with black dog drum mags (not for steel challenge but other fun).Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Link to comment
Les Snyder
I have two CMMG dedicated .22lr uppers, one a 16" and the other about 10"... the 16" is fitted with a Vortex SPARCii and is my practice rifle for PCC... the short 10" upper has a Vortex Venom on a YHM riser and tops my registered SBR and I use it for Steel Challenge...the lower is pretty straight forward... RRA NM trigger, ambi safety, Hogue grip, pressure plug in the buffer... fore end is a short Palmetto State unit that I really like the feel of... a piece of 1/2 aluminum is attached as a hand stop... it tracks very quickly... I have the CMMG polymer charging handle to lessen problems of ejected brass being caught... I filled the 16's charging handle with epoxy to do the same thing I originally used SW15-22 magazines and a Boonie Packer Reddi Mag adapter for use with the Smith magazines... with a lot of use the feed lips were grooved by the rim of the cartridge, which led to feeding problems... so am now using the Black Dog X form mags with stainless feed lips... the newer beam welded magazines seem to have a better investment casting to the lips...I use CCI Blazer... clean the chamber and run the gun wet... no major problems... even though it is a .22lr, pull the rifle into your shoulder Edited October 23, 2019 by Les Snyder Link to comment
fishhunter3
I picked up a complete chiappa upper and installed it on an Anderson stripped lower then used the same furniture and hardware that I have on my 3 gun AR, and still have less into it than a complete factory gun, Link to comment

I’ve read that there setup is very picky on ammo. I want to build a upper with there stuff but wanted to hear more reviews before I pulled the trigger. tomv
Thanks for the input. Is anyone using Biperfire Eclipse trigger? reset problems with .22? Link to comment
stango424
I use a 24c without any issues. Link to comment

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I haven't had feeding issues with it, I shoot CCI Blazer and Standard Velocity out of it. Only issues I had were a few of the older bdm mags needed some of the casting marks knocked down with sand paper. It will need cleaned more often than the 10/22 though so expect that but the bolt pops right out like all ar platform bolts which makes it a breeze. Link to comment
LuvDog
I have a dedicated 22 upper from Nordic Arms. It works great for the most part i have terrible feed issues with black dog mags with the steel feed lips though. The polymer ones work fine Link to comment

Bit the bullet and went totally JP with polymer mags from BD. No problems now. Link to comment
Norther
My Tactical Solutions upper is my favorite .22. Runs standard velocity great. I have a S&W M&P 15-22 also. Link to comment
tomv
Are the Black Dog black 10 round magazines transparent? I'm trying to order some smoke ones but they are out of stock. Want to be able to see if mags are fully loded. Link to comment
TonyMartin
I run a Tippmann Arms M4-22 Elite that has been modified by me. The Tippmann's all aluminum receivers and more "true to AR" operating system are a big step up from the 15-22. Link to comment

Salsantini
I built a dedicated upper using a CMMG barrel and .22 kit. I would recommend you use a Boone Packer S&W 15-22 magazine adaptor. The best .22 mags I found are the S&W mags. With the adaptor the bolt will lock back and the bolt release works. https://www.redi-mag.com/product/better-mag-s-22-rimfire-magazine-adaptor/ Link to comment
tomv
I bought some Black Dog mags before I saw your recommendation. They are running 100% in my gun so far. No adapter is necessary for those. Link to comment
LuvDog
The black dog polymer mags are fine. It’s just the steel lipped ones that have feed issues for me. Link to comment
tomv
I saw the cautions against the metal lipped ones on this forum so I bought the nylon lipped ones. they are fine Link to comment
Dan Sierpina
I have both versions. All the plastic ones run, most of the metal ones do. Link to comment
Matt1911
I use a CMMG conversion kit for my .22 steel challenge AR and use 3 types of mags, all Black dog. Plastic, metal, and I'm guessing lead or pewter feed lips? I'm not sure, but they all run like a champ. I even got some Palmetto branded Black dog mags on the cheap and they're just as good.
