  1. If your shooting 125 power or lighter handloads in that Gen 5 with the factory RSA, it will not run. That dual recoil spring assembly would not run my gamer loads at all. I had to put an Jager rod and IMSI spring in. I load N320 to 860ish at 1.145 (147 gr PD) with no problems in 2 gen 5 34's, plus our other Glocks. Will the gun run factory ammo?
  2. There was another thread about this recently. I recall the poster there was having problems with an 11 pound spring. Our Gen 3 34's run with an 11 pound spring. When we got Gen 5 34's it took a 13# ISMI spring to pass the recoil spring test and we are running TTI Grandmaster kits in both generation of 34's. On the other thread, another poster said the Gen 5 recoil springs guide rods are longer so the spring is under less tension when not compressed. So I just compared a Gen 3 34, a Gen 4 35, and a Gen 5 34 RSA. The Gen 3 is the shortest, the Gen 4 was a little longer, and the Gen 5 is about 0.25" longer (by eye). We are running 13# ISMI springs in ours with the TTI kits and no problems, so maybe 15# for you? Our Gen 5 34 that has a Cerakoted slide had a break in period and goes into battery less freely than the non Cerakoted 34. Not sure if your has been Cerakoted but thought I would throw that out there.
  3. I would trade it in on a M2 or 1301 (if you want a gas gun) and never look back. I have never heard of anyone regretting that move.
  4. I dry tumble for 5 minutes and the One Shot case lube is off my pistol rounds. I got sick of always having a black oily thumb and the rounds look nice now. I did with and without chrono tests, no change noted.
  5. I have 3 Odin barrels on match rifles. Barrel one is a 18" 3 gun rifle gas barrel is 0.5 moa (receiver is trued and thermofit and barrel extension is bedded), barrel two is a 16" midlength barrel, the 0.750 profile and its about 0.8 moa, barrel 3 is the ultralite 16" midlength and that thing is sub moa too, even at 200 yards with a 6x optic. Its the most picky of the 3 about which ammo it likes, the others not so picky. I shoot only handloaded HPBT's, no 55 FMJ's. I hear tons of great things about the Criterion barrels too. I am trying one of those next, a nitrided model. People I shoot with and trust have gotten sub moa results on BA barrels too.
  6. I did not think the problem was you for sure. I subscribed to the thread so please do report back your results with a little stiffer recoil spring. I am using ISMI springs as well. I have the TTI grandmaster kits in all our 34's now so the striker springs are definitely not stock either.
  7. I wonder if a stock striker spring is pulling the gun out of battery a bit when you pull the trigger and have a 11 pound recoil spring. I can run 11 pound springs in our Gen 3 34's but our Gen 5 34's are real sluggish going into battery with an 11 pound spring. If you know that test where you point the gun up pull the trigger and see if the slide will return to battery when cycling the slide. My wife had the first gen 5 and got the slide cerakoted. It definitely would not return to battery performing that test. My gun has the factory finish and I never tried the 11 pound spring. I just went 13 across the platform after that. I don't like being that close to the edge. The slide has more mass on the gen 5 34's is my theory on why it needs a little stouter spring, plus your may have a little more weight up there with a dot. We run reduced power striker springs as well.
  8. My wife was shy of an audience at first. The very first match she shot was an indoor match the day after the actual match. The owner of the shooting range left it set up for her to shoot the next day. She got pretty good at pistol after that. The was 17 years ago and the shooting world is very different now, specifically, there are a lot of woman shooting now. We still do some pistol games but mostly 3 gun and she has become quite good at that also. The women, they really like to be together and my wife has become good friends with a lot of woman shooters, some with names we all know, and they like to squad together. There is often 4 or more women on my squad. Also there is a ladies Brownell's match (A Girl with a Gun Fall Fest) that my wife loves. So my advice is: Squad with the women and bring her. See if you can get her into into a ladies only match AGAG (in KY) or Babes with Bullets (in LA). Also my wife's equipment if VERY different than mine. Her benelli M2 is a compact, her rifle has an ultralite match barrel etc...We had to adapt a few times.
  9. I would not get a 4x scope if you regularly shoot beyond 300. I would not get a 4x scope period. The Burris 1-8 has decent glass and I have shot off a bench through one. I did not care for the reticle though its not terrible or anything. I like the Vortex MOA reticle because it's the same as my Razor. I have been considering getting the PST II for a backup rifle, its decent glass. I would take a look at your proposed reticles in Strelok with your load as well.
  10. I did a lot of underwhelming local matches, though here in the southeast, we have some awesome monthly matches. I would jump feet first into a big match like at Rockcastle and that is a great place to go for sure. I think you will learn a lot and be challenged more. There is a thread about major matches here on benos.
  11. I load with 8208 for 223. I mostly use 75 grain Hornady HPBT's for 3 gun, but have also tested the Sierra TMK's and SMK's. I hear from across the course guys that he 77 Nosler is good too and I bought them but have not tested them yet. The published max for a SMK from Hodgdon website and 8208 is 23.2 grains and its a good load. Sierra told me you could substitute the SMK data for TMK's. For me 23.2 grains under a TMK flies about 2660ish out of an 18" barrel for me (as I recall). It was sub MOA of course. I load the Hornady to the same velocity roughly. The TMK is a nice bullet in and makes a lot of sense in 223 for longer ranges with its higher BC. It looks more secant than tangent ogive but they jumped good for me. All the standard warnings apply, work up in your rifle, yada yada yada...
  12. I use primarily 0W20 synthetic motor oil and clean around every 400 rounds or before a more important match. Four 3gun seasons in its still running like a Benelli and its still wet after 400 rounds.
  13. I've put some light oil on from time to time as the instructions have suggested. And I have had a little rust from time to time after shooting in the rain, but it seems to go away after a little oil and has never affected the shootability.
  14. I did not read every post but if your loaded rounds are not fitting the gauge or barrel you can buy a 40/10 Lee FCD and run your loaded rounds through it. The carbide sizer ring on the FCD may put your loaded round back in spec. Looks like about a $25 experiment: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1011209519/lee-carbide-factory-crimp-die
  15. I think it is best t o expand the case mouth. I have tried loading a few just off a Dillon trimmer and nothing bad happened. It will be intersting jut to see if your groups shrink a lot. If not it was probably not the mandrel. Tell us about your load and how does factory ammo shoot?
  16. Yes that was my point double the range you will be shooting. Sorry if I was not clear on that. I have been to many matches beyond 400 and many targets like 480 or 500 so I would not get a 850. My Ranger 1000 never had a problem at any 3 gun match. I have a Ranger 1800 now and I have never had any problems at a 3 gun match either. That looks like a fun target array!
  17. I think the best for the money is the Vortex Ranger or Sig Kilo. Sig has a decent warranty but Vortex, last time I looked, was the only range finder with a lifetime warranty. Most are around one year. Two things I think are important: try and get a rangefinder the same magnification as your variable power optic so you can look at the targets through your range finder and get acquainted with what the targets will look like. You can actually spend quite a bit of time looking at the targets this way when other people are shooting. The other thing is that the cheapest range finders don't range that well. I would get a range finder good for 1000 yards and that should work for 3 gun or hunting. Whatever you want to range at a given distance, buy a range finder that doubles that. If I were to make a specific recommendation it would be a Vortex Ranger 1300.
  18. Try and take the mandrel out and load a few rounds just as a test or instead of the expander mandrel try a resizing die instead of the madrel. A runout gauge is an idea with merit, the Sinclair tool is popular and I have no regrets with mine.
  19. If you are going to get into long range one day the Giraud may be better for a couple of reasons: it chamfers the inside case mouth and it does not affect the neck diameter, particularly making it smaller like the Dillon. The bad thing about the Giraud is you have to handle every piece of brass. One can trim a large volume of brass in a day with the Dillon! I have the RT1500 and I have a case prep toolhead with a universal decapper in station one and the trim die in station 3. I am unable to fit any other dies on the tool head (for a 650) because of the massive size of the 1500. I wish they still made the 1200. When trimming with the 1500 it resizes the case and bumps the shoulder back and all that BUT it does not run an expander ball through the case mouth (obviously) so the case mouth diameter is actually quite small after trimming/sizing. After trimming I tumble off the lube. Some guys will load like that, others will chamfer, others (like me) run a expander ball through the case mouth on their loading tool head or use a M die or mandrel. On my loading tool head I screw out a Dillon resizing the die two full turns and make sure the decapping pin is down. The Dillon die has a carbide expander ball. I load my 3 gun ammo using the Dillon powder measure. My SD's are in the high teens and group size is solid sub moa out to 200 (with 6x optics) out of quality hand lapped barrels. I am always evolving and setting up a precision toolhead with a electronic powder measure and precision dies and all that but for now this present technique works for 3 gun nicely. I think the cut is very clean and square, the cutter is carbide. I have probably trimmed three 5 gallon buckets on mine and its still perfect.
  20. I have the MGW tool for Glocks and its nice for Glock sights but it will not work for fully adjustable rear sights, like made by Dawson Precision. I end up drifting those in with a punch. I like tools and have a low threshold to buy them if I need them, but would probably not buy the MGW tool you are asking about. I don't have experience with the other tools you asked about. I use a small gun smithing hammer and a brass punch from this set acquired almost two decades ago: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/761422/lyman-tapper-hammer-with-interchangeable-brass-nylon-steel-heads-and-punch-set-7-piece
  21. I thought a 20 gauge maybe advantageous as well (I have an 11 and 12 year old also). I asked a team Benelli shooter about that issue at a match and she reflected a lot of the thinking of Tonythetiger in his previous post. Invictus was making caddies at one time for 20 gauge.
  22. I am in the process of switching over to Sport Pistol from N320. Sport Pistol makes a lot of sense and I do not shoot coated bullets. I did think SP was less smokey that TG in your video.
  23. Ours have run great and I pretty much leave them loaded all the time. I changed the springs electively after a couple of years. I want to recall I had to play with one of the psrings to get it to snap onto the follower. I have had good luck with the TTI Grandmaster trigger kits too.
