  1. I have tried the 77 SMK, 77 TMK, 75 Hornady BTHP and the 73 gr ELD. The 73 gr ELD was the least accurate for me out of 3 hand lapped barrels. I have the Nosler 77's but have not loaded to test yet.
  2. It has been within a tenth of a grain for me BUT the SD's are lower than CFE which meters basically perfect. Works .3 to .7 MOA for me under heavier bullets.
  3. The longer I reload, the less I use Lee Precision products (I do use some). Looks like a toy compared to a Dillon. I am sure the Lee warranty will reflect its quality, what is it 1 year?
  4. I don't know the answer but have a couple of suggestions. Since there is float in the toolhead getting one of the clamp kits may help out. I think you have to tap the pin holes. I know uniquetek has them and I think Whidden gun works may make one. I have been thinking about loading precision rounds on my 550 or 650 and with the dies your using and wonder what your TIR is? I would think clamping the toolhead would contribute to a more consistent OAL as well.
  5. 2457 is a little slower than I would care for but I know it would work. Out of a 16" barrel 22.9 of 8208 had a MV of 2446 SD 12 with a Hornady 75 gr HPBT, the Sierra 77 would be faster of course, MV 2639 (out of an 18" barrel) for me. That is an accurate load and well within a big node for me if you want to try it. That is .1 over max in the last Hornady manual but that same load with 73 gr ELD had a MV of 2567. As I said it was pretty much accurate all the way up in my testing so I think you can match your existing velocity if you wish to try it.
  6. Remington had a bad reputation the last few years for poorly made products and I believe it was well deserved. I have owned some 700's and 870's and still do but Remington is not even on my radar anymore for a bolty (looking at a RPR that I can switch the barrel on myself). After running a Benelli M2 for a few years in 3 gun the Remingtons are a F'ing joke! If they go out of business, which is fine with me, it is primarily because of "business decisions" made by bean counters and upper management. I feel bad for the craftsman that built the guns.
  7. I was getting "donuts" on my projectiles using standard seating dies. Switching to a Forster bench rest seating die cured that for me. I can tell your knowledgeable so I am guessing you already went there. I am also guessing you tried a long drop tube style funnel insofar as it is practical on a loading toolhead. I don't know what time constraints you have, and I just throw this out there to throw it out there, but the electric tooth brush trick to compress the powder (saw it on the 6.5 guys channel). The case density will be lower with 8208 I believe. I think its an amazing propellant, super accurate, temp stable, meters well etc. I believe you will be well overpressure before you run out of case volume. If i may ask what type of velocities are you getting from 24 grains of Varget out of what length barrel?
  8. It could be 55 grain ammo is not doing well past 300.
  9. I have not tried Varget in 223/5.56 but I am considering it. I have tried it on 308. I had primarily used ball propellants CFE 223, TAC, and 748 prior and have had the best accuracy wise in the order listed. I had noticed significant velocity changes in cold weather so I switched to 8208. 8208 is a little faster than Varget as I recall, closer to 4895. With 23.2 of 8208 CCI 400 Sierra 77 SMK out of an 18" 416R stainless tube I get 2688 MV, SD 14, ES 57 (number of shots 13). The TMK are close to that also and are more accurate for me. That is published data on the IMR Hodgdon website showing 55,000 PSI with that load. I was using 22.9 of 8208 with a Hornady 75 Gr HPBT but after quite a bit of testing I am going up to 23.4 of 8208 with the Hornady 75 HPBT for 3 gun. The 23.4 goes 2635 MV SD 19 ES 77 out of a 16" Stainless tube. I have not made it to the range to chrono this load out of a 18" tube but I do know it is solid .5-.7 moa in 3 of my AR's (all are 3 gun rifles). The bearing surface of the Hornady 75 HPBT is shorter than the Sierra offerings but expect velocity comparable of higher with the 73 gr ELDM, 22.9 of 8208 with the ELDM the MV was 2655 SD 16 out an 18" tube. I am not using a powder dispenser but I just bought one so I am hoping to lower my SD's. The 77 TMK has worked great in all my testing and I plan to use that if and when I shoot a true long range gas gun match (coming soon I hope). I see no reason to abandon the Hornady 75 gr HPBT for 3 gun, it works great and is half the price. May I recommend the new Lyman reloading book for Long Range Precision. It's about $13 and has great 223 data, they do use a 223 chamber for their load development but take most loads up to 55,000 PSI, and thus, the max loads are appreciably higher than a lot of manuals I own. The last 2 Hornady manuals have 8208 in the load data as well. Hopefully that give you an idea of real world velocities though I do want to point out those velocities were obtained about 2000 feel elevation. Lastly, when I loaded with ball propellants my SD's are much higher even though the thrown powder charges were invariably perfect out of a Dillon measure on a Redding beam scale. I getting .1 grain variation high or low with thrown charges out of the Dillon measure BUT the SD's are lower than with ball propellant! Some of the load data I have listed is above published max's (.1-.2)so all the standard warnings apply I too trim with the Dillon 1500. After that I run the Dillon carbide expander ball through the neck with the die turned out 2 full turns on my loading tool head. Are you doing anything with the necks on your cases after power trimming or are you annealing, chamfering, loading as it comes out of the trimmer? Hope this helps!
  10. The Stoeger is the way to go and the M3K if you can do it. When you figure that you get 3 extended chokes with the M3K, besides the enhancements, it's a no brainer.
  11. Thats a pretty low SD. I am curious is that like 24 grains of Varget under a 75 or 77 grain bullet and how are you charging your propellant? Are you using bushing of FL dies? I too know that a lot of guys like LC brass and sort by year. Sorry to take your thread off kilter, my SD is 18 right now with 8208.
  12. Nothing wrong with a small amount of taper crimp or circumferential crimp like from a Lee FCD. My experience is that coated and plated, and lead bullets for that matter, are more sensitive to "issues" related to crimp. It may be possible that simply changing to a jacketed bullet you may be fine. I usually pull a couple of bullets looking for excess crimp and make a couple of dummy rounds that I chamber repeatedly to see if they lengthen.
  13. The Hanson has a sub moa guarantee and so does Odin Works too. I know quite a few folks with Criterion barrels now and they are very happy as well. Lot's of options out there.
  14. I had Lasik done about 10 years ago, 2015 vision for a few years but back in glasses again. I also have halos at night which is annoying. I would not do it again if I hd the choice to make all over unless your correct is huge now.
  15. Depends on the match and the match directer. Some of the Matches around here are sponsored by Pure Gold Chokes (they are indeed awesome) so you can expect a complex array of shotgun targets. I use chokes in this order of prevalence: IC, Spreader, LM, M, F. Our IC's are pretty tight and my LM patterns tighter than a benelli M so I just added some Carlson Skeet chokes to have another option, that was 4 years in. I will have to check out the chokes listed above. Learning there constriction should tell you the equivalent common terminology.
  16. When I used to use Hornady 55's and used 26.0 grains of 748 I think I got around 2800 FPS out of a 16' barrel. M855 went over 200 FPS faster out of the same barrel.
  17. There are 3 gun nation Matches in Danville VA (last I knew) and Carolina Guns and Gear has match's in Asheboro on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Clinton SC has a monthly match also. I don't know about over on the coast. Unfortunately the best way to find out about these places in on Facebook. Carolina guns and gear has there own Website maybe.
  18. A little update to my previous post. We acquired a Gen 5 34 last week and it is impressive in the trigger and accuracy department. It's actually my wife's but I want one pretty bad now.
  19. Do yourself a favor and go to the vendor tent here on the forum and use one of the VIP links for Rudy Project, the prices are great. Look in the clearance area too there may be something you like in there. There were Rydan shooters kits a couple of weeks ago with multiple lenses. I am 52 and have had fantastic luck with the optical insert. I have a couple of different types of red lenses but I would go with a photochromic red lens. When you see "Laser" lenses in Rudy speak they are mirrored. They are made in Italy, super quality. I am Rudy for life now because we are so happy with ours. Nothing wrong with other brands but check out the prices available to you. I bought my first pair prior to this forum VIP link and paid a lot. If you do want corrective lenses there are two type of optical inserts, standard and progressive.
  20. I just took a risk on the 6.1mm. I installed them today and they shot pretty much right on with 147's and a fast powder (N320) . I agree with your advise (and humor)!
  21. You talking about 34's or 35's? I am assuming 34 since there is no Gen 5 35 yet that I know of. I think Gen 3 or 5 will have better triggers. The Gen 5 guns promise more accuracy and a better trigger I think. I shot a local 3 gun match Saturday with a Team Glock shooter and she was shooting a Gen 3 34 but she is getting a Gen 5. If cost is a consideration a Gen 3 used will be cheapest (at least in the states). I do have a Gen 4 G20 but I am not a huge fanboy of the Gen 4's preferring the Gen 3 over the 4's for various reasons. I have a lot of Gen 2 guns and like those a lot as well so I am happy about the absence of finger grooves on the Gen 5 though they can be removed on the other generations. You will probably get a lot of opinions but just get one and run it, your tastes will develop from there. If your just getting into it there is a lot more aftermarket stuff for the Gen 3's I believe.
  22. My wife wants to change up her Dawson's for Glock OE sights. We shoot 147's at 920 FPS. Does anyone have a recommendation for a rear sight height in this application? I am thinking the 147's will go high with the factory sights and I should get the 6.1mm rear sight. Thanks in advance!
