Sandbagger123
this is not a debate on slide stop or sling shot. For those that use the thumb, do you use the strong hand or weak hand one??
Paul-the new guy
Are you right handed? I put the thumb of my right hand on the slide stop as I am doing the reload, no real pressure it is just kind of resting there. I run a modified extended slide stop but I did it with a stock slide release also, and when I seat the mag my thumb releases the slide with no concious effort. Give it a shot. This is with 1911 and 2011 style guns. My Glocks auto forwarded when I seated the mag
kirbinster
I try not to do either. I hold my gun pointing upward at a 45 degree angle and slam the mag in hard, the slide usually will slam forward by itself. If not, my thumb is prepared to hit the slide stop lever. bc361
I shot a G34 for 2 years and I used my strong hand thumb. When I switched to a CZ SP01 last year, I had to retrain myself to use my weak hand thumb. I just depends on the firearm for me but I prefer strong hand thumb. theKenny
I only shoot a Glock, so like kirbinster, I'm planning on that. If not then Strong hand thumb.
Sandbagger123
I shot a G34 for 2 years and I used my strong hand thumb. When I switched to a CZ SP01 last year, I had to retrain myself to use my weak hand thumb. I just depends on the firearm for me but I prefer strong hand thumb. this is the issue that i am having. i can reach the slide stop with my strong thumb on Glocks and MP's, but the 1911 and my k100, they are situated farther forward. I might need to retrain myself to do it that way fro all guns. I have watched a few vids by pro shooters and a few of them advocate the use of the weak thumb. dee loo
I use weak hand thumb, can't reach slidestop with strong thumb and I always bump extended slide release on glock or 1911. I know Vogel uses the strong thumb like paul does.
JeffWard
Light strong-hand thumb pressure on the slide stop of an M&P guarantees "auto-forward" 100% of the time. Shouild do the same on all striker-fired guns. Jeff
BillR1
I use the strong hand thumb on my M&Ps. I can't reach it on my STI, so I use WH thumb when shooting the 1911.
rowdyb
i am right handed. on 1911 style guns my left thumb hits the slide release. on glocks and all others my right thumb does it. i do not count on the bump slam to bring the slide foreward. pbosik
I am right handed, but use my left hand thumb always no matter what pistol I use. That way my r.h. stays in the same position. Works great for me, your mileage may vary.
captain037
I try not to do either. I hold my gun pointing upward at a 45 degree angle and slam the mag in hard, the slide usually will slam forward by itself. If not, my thumb is prepared to hit the slide lever. That's how I do it too. Works great.
Racer377
on 1911s, weak hand thumb, on pretty much everything else, strong hand thumb.
mag17
Weak hand to grip slide.... I have found this works best for me for reloading and clearing other jams - FTF, double feeds, etc
newmexicocrawler
On my blocks I use my strong hand thumb...on my 1911 I use my weak hand thumb
Agent #1911
if your strong hand thumb can reach the slide release, utilize it. otherwise, weak thumb

mag17
"Sling shot" with the weak hand... Usually use same technique for other jams that I encounter - FTF, etc.

Gandof
Always weak hand thumb. As i seat the magazine it's already in position to hit the release, and hopefully, my strong hand has reaquired a shooting grip.
Steve Koski
Strong hand. But you guys are making me think. Thanks Gandof.
JerryShoots
I've tried both on my 1911's for a season each. I was more consistent and fast with my strong hand thumb but found that I need to use exactly the same brand and model slide stop on all guns for that to remain the case. If I shoot another person's pistol I use the weak hand thumb due to the differences from one brand of stop to another.
bc361
hmmm. do u guys ever get confused when in a match when running both styles? Yes I did. Switching back and forth between a Glock in SSP and 1911 in CDP weekly, my performance dropped in both classes. I tried strong hand thumbing my slide release on the 1911 and weak hand thumbing my Glock. I finally stuck to one platform and performance became more consistent. Carmoney
I think it was Mike Plaxco who said, "The reason the good Lord gave you a left thumb is to drop the slide on a .45." Good advice back when nearly everybody shot a .45 in "combat matches," and still good advice today.
