  1. Back in the Single stack open days!!!! I used 160 gr lead with no problems. Power factor was 175 we loaded to 180. The but is we only had to go to 1125 FPS. The heavier lead bullets didn't give me any problems back then. As stated the lighter bullets pushed at 1350 + will more than likely vaporize lots of lead and you may not get through a whole match with out the bbl being leaded bad enough to cause accuracy problems
  2. I use Leupold Delta point with the 7.5 Delta I think ( its the larger of the two. Top of delta is actual POA/POI at 25 yds for precision shots, the large delta is used for fast / close work
  3. Carry the pistol the way it is designed to be carried. Cocked and Locked
  4. I went all Dawson and got 20 reloadable and fit the gauge one will hold 21 its the mag I start the stage with. Open the gun inset mag release slide. ready to go
  5. Production so he learns how to shoot sights. I know 100's of people who cannot shoot iron sights on a rifle becasue they started with scopes Also the noise of an open gun may be very uncomfortable to a new shooter. Most people have more problems with the noise than the actual recoil to the hand. I suggest you double plug him either way you go but especially if you choose open good fortune and tell him we are glad he has joined the ranks !!!!
  6. X-5 SAO may need some fitting. grips from the allround will generally trade back and forth with a 226
  7. Max had the gun custom built by dan bedell to shoot open with. Not a fair reference IMO I'm a fan of SIG but don't play with them in uspsa any more since I'm out of the "trade" now. After area 7 last year at SIG ! I couldn't get a part for my x-5 while at the factory I gave up playing THEIR game. Still own several and like the basic 220/226 but I'm done using them for game guns.
  8. Have the gunsmith that was with you fit a new one so you can shoot your matches and go on. Stuff breaks sometimes and the cost of the part and labor shouldn't be that much compared to match fees etc. IMO
  9. I use SP in my 625 and for lost brass matches Use LP for local and practice
  10. STI Trojan if you can up the money a little Sparten's seem to great good reviews for the price. and as stated before, you're going to change lots of things before your done!
  11. cerakote seems slippery to me. which could be good on the rails etc for lubricity. But not if you have to rack the gun from a table start etc. I like more traditional finishes. Blueing, Hard Chrome, etc
  12. DAA Race Master is what I use for open I have a Ghost for limited cause I shoot a Para there Both have worked well for me
  13. WAC is my back up powder to 7625. Going to keep shooting 7625 until it goes away. Some are saying its gonna go this fall. I hope not!
  14. I've got a tru bor and a used GM that are mostly stock. MAgwells, triggers, oversize mag release , aftec extractor- didn't have any extraction problems but all my other 1911/2011 have them so the open guns got them also. they have run great and I've been competing at high A class with them most of the time. I think they are a great way to start and will allow you to figure out what you may want to have built into a custom gun when the time comes. They best of the best all shoot 2011's so why mess the the other stuff?!?!?!?!
  15. I use both 7625 and 4756 they'll both make open easy in 38 SC 7625 make super low SD loads in my nine minor loads 4756 is a good back up power for 40 major
  16. Put and AFTEC extractor in use the org as a your back up. Either tune or have someone tune a three finger spring to keep in your kit. (don't know why but mine went soft after about 5k rounds and caused me fits cause I've never had one go bad(it wouldn't hold tension) so now I have one in my bag that is pre bent(tuned) for me /the gun That's all I keep. the STI truBor and GM that I have have been super reliable Enjoy the open class (It's spoiled me)
  17. I was just talking to a guy about this today. Just imagine how many old single stack comp guns would come out of the back corners of safes. I turned one of mine into a 9mm SS gun BUT I still have the 38 super, barrel with the comp on it. Yes with the front sight on the comp.!!!! Think I'll ask our guys if they would be interested in a fun shoot one of these months to include "classic" division jcc7x7
  18. I buy the no gaps and if I want a gap turn it into one. its just opening up the front of the insert . I use them on all my 1911's and only use a no gap on one gun. Because of the special base pad thing. All my other guns run fine with extended base pads, usually about .500 to .650 or there abouts Wilson and CMC all work with their long pads as to solid bottom mags with ed brown base pads installed good fortune jcc7x7
  19. I sold my STI Eagle and kept the Para 16-40 I shoot it better and have had no problems I put ignition parts in all factory 1911 with the expection of Dan Wessons cause they have good internals anyway!!! Being a Glock armorer does not make you a 1911 gunsmith BUT its not that hard (put the dremel tool down LOL) there is a lot of info out there and buying a C&S or Dawson ignition kit its a matter of installation and Polishing (not honing usually) then adjusting the three finger spring to get the wgt you want. Para's are a 1911 with wide grip so they are not difficult to work on. Sights and aftermarket stuff is avail. Mine is mostly Dawson causeI used to live up the road from them. Shoot straight good fortune with the new gun jcc7x7
  20. Bowen's rough country sights have a bunch of info on what the factory sight was / is Also S&W will be able to tell you with a phone call or e mail. what factory spec is
  21. Leave the three finger spring (i.e. sear spring) alone. Mainsprings are cheap also but need care so you don't lose parts when you R/R them. They can get some rust on them from sweat when you carry the gun all the time. So check them when you do your detail strip and change if rust is present
