Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. One make I don't see mentioned too often for single stack is Dan Wesson. I bought a PM9 several months ago and can't be happier. About a thousand rounds through it so far and not one issue. Fit and finish are excellent, trigger is nice and with a little tweaking of the sear spring breaks at 3 1/2 lbs. I added and S&A mag well and a pair of VZ slant grips and as far as I'm concerned that's all that it needed. I know the true test will be how it holds up for the next 9,000 or so rounds, but for know I'm quite happy with what $1,400 bought me.
  2. Reloading is not off the table, far from it, there's a Dillon 650 in my future, but right now I'm living out of a travel trailer while traveling for work and there just simply isn't any place to put a press. In fact, that's one of the reasons I'm moving to 9 mm from 40 for my steel challenge gun, low power 40 loads can be a bit difficult to get and with out being able to load my own the next best thing for low recoil is 9 mm. I ordered 1,000 rounds each for 9 mm and 45 from Freedom, I've had pretty good luck with their 40 S&W rounds so I figured I'd give the other calibers a try.
  3. How do you purchase from them? The web page only shows dealers in AL, TN, GA and it doesn't look like you can order direct.
  4. I have a Dan Wesson PM-9 coming and will soon acquire either a Brown or Baer full size 1911 in .45, So its time to buy a few cases of range ammo and I need feed back. I'm travelling a lot for work for the better part of the year so hand loads are off the table, although I will save as much brass as possible to reload in the future, and I'd like to stay with brass cased rounds. The main rounds I'm looking at are Winchester white, Federal American Eagle, PMC, Blazer Brass then some of the remans like Freedom. What would you guys buy to feed these higher end 1911s?

    Para elite

I have a Smith & Alexander magwell on mine and like it. Not a perfect drop in, I had to ream the hole for the manspring housing pin a bit. In addition you'll have to shave some of the plastic off the top corners of the magazine sides on the factory mags with the plastic base pads to get it to seat. Couple of passes with a coarse file did it for me. It's a really nice gun for the money.
  6. I've got a matte finish S/S Para Expert that I would like to clean up the flats so that it looks like the brushed finish on a factory Colts or older S&Ws. Anyone know what grit wet/dry sandpaper would duplicate that kind of finish?
  7. Well it looks like Les Baer is the hands down favorite, but along the lines of more still isn't enough I think I'll get both the Baer and the Dan Wesson.....well sort of. My plan all along was to get a DW PM-9 to replace my Glock as my primary steel gun and range toy. What has led me to look for a 45 is that not too long ago I got a good deal on a new Para Expert S/S 45 and now I remember how much I liked shooting a 45, which I haven't done in about 20 years. While I could send my Para off for some work and have a gun that would perform like the Bear for less money, in the end it would still be a worked over Para, so looks like Baer it is. While I like the Concept V I'd prefer it w/o the FCS, so does anyone know what the lead time is on a pistol custom ordered from Baer or better yet know where one is?
  8. I want to get a nice S/S 1911 but can't decide which one. I'd prefer not to spend more than $2,000. I've narrowed my choices down to: Les Baer Concept V Dan Wesson Valor S&W Performance center SW1911PC STI Trojan (hard chrome) Springfield Trophy Match I've also considered going more and getting either an Ed Brown Kobra or a STI Sentinel Premier. What do you guys think? Edit: The gun will be for playing at the range and maybe the odd steel or practical pistol match.
  9. Just picked up a new Para Expert .45 and added a Smith & Alexander mag well. The base pads on the factory Para mags is a bit too wide at the top and they hit the mag well sides before the mag locks in. I see different part numbers for different manufacturers (Wilson, Metalform, etc) mags so which base pads will fit the Para factory mags?
  10. I picked up a new Para Expert Stainless .45 today. The only thing I don't like about the appearance is that the entire pistol is in a matte finish. I'd like to polish the sides of the slide to give it a sheen similar to the factory Colts and older S&W autos. I know how to do the polishing, just don't know what grit to use to get the right sheen, anyone know?
  11. Pretty simple question, for an average shooter is the Dan Wesson PM-9 worth the extra $500+ over a Springfield Loaded? Everyone seams to agree the DW is a lot of pistol for the money, but is there that much of a difference that an average shooter be able to tell the difference?
  12. Other than the S/S vs C/S, is there any difference between the RO and the Loaded?
  13. That's exactly what I did, Gen 2 police trade in for $314, Lone Wolf trigger and barrel, Dawson fiber optics and I still have less in it than the current going price for a new Gen 3. As a matter of fact the slide is at Rock Your Glock for hard chrome. Also, go with the A Grip stick on grip. Seams kind of expensive for what you get until you shoot it for the first time. My right hand is damaged and don't have the grip strength I once had and the pistol tends to shift a bit during runs, with the A Grip on its like I doubled my grip strength. The gun doesn't move at all.
  14. Found it at Bass Pro Shops in north San Antonio, don't remember the brand and I can't find them on their web site. The laser would only stay on for about a second, but it was long enough to see the POA/POI difference. Being able to practice across a room and get an instant visual feedback made a real difference.
  15. Problem Solved!! I finally had some time to practice dry firing and do some careful analysis of my fundamentals and I found out that my problems were related to poor technique caused by my hand injury. I bought a laser snap cap and it did wonders for me by showing me exactly what the POI was doing when I pulled the trigger. With the dry firing I found that my trigger pull was partially to blame. If the trigger was on the pad of my finger, where there is some damage and an inconsistent sensation of touch, my groups were large, and consistently low. By putting my finger onto the trigger until the right edge of the trigger was at the crease of the first joint (where sensation is normal), and centering my finger vertically on the trigger the POI became much more consistent and pretty much at POA. So, thinking I'd solved my problems I was off to the range, only to be disappointed once again by low and loose groups. I was doing better, but not nearly good enough. Fortunately I had a bad primer in the middle of a mag. Right as the striker fell I felt my hand tense up and the front sight dipped. I realized that unlike when I was dry firing, when I was shooting live ammo I was over compensating for my lost grip strength by squeezing way too tight on the grip with my ring and little finger. Once I was able to make myself relax the groups tightened up and were dead on POA. Groups are still nothing to brag about, but they're about 1/4 what they were and right where they're supposed to be. Thanks to everyone who chimed. With your help I was able to solve a problem that I would have spent who knows how long trying to fix with equipment changes and probably would have ended up selling the gun.
