When is this bullet drought going to end?

Just can't locate a sources for 158 gr RN lead bullets with cup base anywhere.  Now I learn that Magtech is no longer selling bullets and shifting productions to "loaded ammo" sales only.

Makes me wonder where all of these reloading supplies are going and when bullets will be available again.

I went to Bass Pro and was surprised to see some powder on the shelf.  I picked up a pound of CFE pistol.  All the common cartridges were sold out (.22LR, 9mm/45CACP,223,30-30,308) but there was a lot of niche rounds available including a ton of 30-06.  It was inspiring to see.

Been looking for (.358) bullets for reloading...everyone is cleaned out.  Looks like revolvers are just as popular as the semi's.  With nearly all matches cancelled who is hoarding the bullets.

I can understand loaded ammo being hoarded...but bullets? Didn't think we had that many reloaders.

When Obama got elected and everyone “knew” total gun bans were coming, reliable inventory of primers and powder didnt return for 1.5-2 years.

2020 was a massive record year for buying their first gun or two, which led directly to ammo shortages. This leads to tons of people getting into reloading in hopes of dodging the shortages and the high prices.

Toss in the typical pre-election desires to stock up “just in case” and you have a recipe for another longterm shortage.

Someone here recommended this place. Didn’t see 158’s but they do show a 160. Any port in the storm! 😀

Total junk.  They smoke like crazy and are not very accurate.  I bought them because they supposedly would not lead up a comp.  I tried them in my PCC.  The people standing next to me wondered if I was shooting black powder.  As far as accuracy went, I could keep most of them on a 12" x 12" target at 25 yards.

A fellow forum member read my initial report and wanted to try them anyway.  I sent him a box full.  He reported the same experience as I had.  So all those J-Ames bullets will sit at the back of a storage shelf basically forever.  I can't see wasting a primer just to throw a bad bullet down range.

I have had totally the opposite experience. Here's quick review of the 147/135 FP profile in 9mm:

  1.  He's fast with delivery
  2. The weight is normal variance between bullets.
  3. The coating does stay on the bullet (I tested into a trap and examined them)
  4. The lead is softer and the bullets deform slightly more than Precision Bullet, Blues, Acme...
  5. No notable increase in smoke using SP (in fact far less than the ACMES I used to use with TG).
  6. Accuracy was no different than PD, PB, ACME, Blues at 25 yards from TF Stock 2.
  7. The coating leaves a slight grey slippery residue on my fingers. I suspect he uses graphite in the mix.

Are they worth shooting? Obviously one has to test and find out what works in their particular gun. For me the answer is yes.

Here's a good example of different gun results. I have a Glock 19 Gen 5 and it is the sole gun in my pistol collection which has very poor accuracy with any of the minor PF 147 grain loads I use. For some reason it hates slow rounds (less than 1000 fps) .

BTW my favorite coated bullet brand is Precision Bullet. Very well made and the coating better than jacketed. But, like them all place your order and get in line.

That is a swaged hollow base bullet.   Good Luck. There are only a few manufactures of that projectile.

More accurately described as "cup base"....hollow base is a lot deeper.  Follows the "cup core" design.

Presses are backordered with waitlists. $40 Lee 9mm die sets are going for $100+ on eBay. Everyone is jumping into reloading, some too late.

That being said, I've still been able to get my desired bullets (SNS 135gr RN) just by patiently checking the site daily. And since primers are the real bottleneck, I suspect the bullet makers will begin to catch up over the next few months.

Not to get political but election could prolong it .

Agreed but in general bullets are the last to vanish and the first to reappear.

about a year or two after Sandy Hook, I posted a classified ad here for excess bullets that I had.

most of them were traditional cast lead bullets with the waxy lube grooves.

The demand was still so high, they like flew off my shelves.

oh that is pretty.

They look even better when cleaned up and casted into ingots (these are my shoulder shrug “dumbells” since real dumbells are in short supply too):

Are they undersized or too hard? I was just going by another poster that had good luck with them.

Looking for 158 RN (long nose not stubby) with "cup base" which I find makes a big difference.

I too have found that those shoot better, even the plated ones with the cup. Think it helps the base seal better. Bevel base are the worst.
