Nationals Location

Recommended Posts

PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING

This poll is just to get a general idea of where shooters would prefer the Nats to go (or not) after the Barry contract is up. Please don't just vote for the closest range to you arbitrarily. Try to consider travelling at least 1/2 a day. Better yet, flying to the location which should make things equal.

Things to consider would be: range layout & capacity, airports, lodging, weather, family vacation aspects, etc.

If there is a range capable of hosting a Nats that I didn't list, add it to a post here please and explain why it would be your choice.

Frank's range is a flight clear across the dang country but with the availability of other family friendly stuff there it is a much easier political sell. Vegas/Reno just works out to be too expensive as the wife would probably expend considerable coin in the casinos. ;)

My 2nd choice would be Missoula due to proximity.

Pretty much ANYWHERE but in the gun hostile state of Ill-noise (Other gun hostile states like CA, NY and NJ need not apply).

I'd prefer Missoula or Bend if for no other reason than climate. I just can't get into chewing my air before I inhale.

What about Rio Salado? They handle a huge volume through there pretty regularly from what I understand.

I voted for Frostprrof because I might be able to amke a family trip as opposed to Barry, which is closer, but has near zero appeal for a vacation destination.

Montana and Vegas are too far to drive and flying is not a great option, although it is workable. I realize that as an East Coaster, I have a bias, and that the Westies have the same concerns about coming East, that we do heading West. Ideally we should have a Central location. Or perhas three locations and run one Nat at each, each year. Limited/Productin, Open L-10 and 3-Gu/Multi-Gun. Each year we have one in the east, one central and one west, rotate as required.

To have a rotation, we can't have the President making sweetheart multi-year deals with one range...unless it is a 3 year deal with 3 ranges so we can do Jim's plan.

I really like Jim's plan. It would be more expensive to do than to hold the Back-to-Back in one place and would burn three weekends instead of 2 which could make scheduling (that whole other thread) more of an issue.

One problem though is that the ranges that can hold a Pistol Nats may or may not be able to hold a 3-Gun Nats (unless it is full of 50 yard rifle shots...blech!). The converse is also true.

We can only hope that Mike V. is reading this board and therefore knows the desires/opinions of the common shooter. We know most of the BoD hangs here (Thanks guys!).

Since Frostproof is only 2 hours away, I voted for Fredericksburg VA. The Nationals there in 97 was perfectly nice - they just needed a safe area at the parking lot so we could belt our 2-3lb guns rather than bag them in to the stages.

Driving 2 days with guns and ammo beats the heck out of flying ANYWHERE with guns & ammo. I don't need to save a few hours, I want to keep my stuff!

I voted for Huntington, Pa. Those guys and gals put on a excellent match (Area 8.)

My second choice would be Franks range because of the family friendly attractions in the area for those that would choose to combine the match with vacation for the family.

Vegas is flat out the best choice IMHO for many reasons.

Cheap rooms

Cheap food

Cheap flights

Cheap rental cars (after the flight in)

Cheap (and expensive) entertainment options

Rio Salado would be the number 2 choice just because it is shooter mecca and could handle the US3G just like Vegas.

Bend get's the next nod from me because it's a nice part of the country scenic wise and the range could also handle the US3G.

All these locations are at least a full day drive for me and even though I wouldn't mind going east, I think semi-arid high desert locations are invariably great shooting ranges too.

Rio Salado in Summer would not attract me, but hold it in the cool season there and I'm in. Same with Vegas though. The US3G in mid October kinda works, but May through September would not.

Whether you like it or not, you have to admit that Reno has the best summer climate conditions other than Raton and Missoula.

Match in Winter, I'll take desert. Match in summer, I'll take elevation please!

BTW, I am not against the east coast, but if it's in the southeast, summer is sauna time and I don't like shooting in high humidity if the temperature is high also.

105 degree temps - no thanks.

How about John Shaw's place in Tunica, MS or the Blackwater range in VA? The only drawback to Blackwater is that they might be a little busy down there for a few years...and there are not a lot of hotels close.

I agree about that point in summer and said so in my post. And 115 is more like it in mid summer.

But Vegas is still the best location by far in the areas I mentioned (Cheap everything) and if you hold it in winter, or late fall/early spring, the weather can't be beat. Same for Rio Salado.

So how do you keep the wife out of the casino? That is the part that makes Vegas and Reno not cheap for me. "But I was just playing the quarter machines dear" :(

Sorry if the following sounds bitchy, but I just don't like Vegas.

Vegas is flat out the best choice IMHO for many reasons.

Cheap rooms  .....

Where?! And I don't mean "plastic sheets and wesson oil" fare like Arizona Charlie's!

Cheap food

You're sort-of right there, so long as its not the aforementined Arizona Charlie's! (Yes, I freely admit I've got a personal burr up my butt about AC's.) But the better buffets are getting pricier, and the real restauants are as high-priced as anywhere.

Cheap flights

Not from the east coast that I know of. Not to mention the hassle of flying with guns and the (now) bigger hassle of flying with ammo.

Cheap rental cars

You're right, there.

Cheap (and expensive) entertainment options

Well, let's see, "cheap". Uh..... hmm....... well......., oh, I guess you can go look at the Bellagio fountains for free. That should kill an hour. And I think they're still running an (albeit racier) version of the pirate ship show down the street. Beyond that, real shows are often high 2-digits or low 3-digits per seat, and the absolute most expensive thing on the face of the earth to do there is, of course, gambling. After all, where do you think they get the money to build all that stuff? So, do the fountains and the pirate ship (and I'll grant without verification 2 or 3 other free things that might be there which I haven't seen), skip the shows and the casinos, and...... there's about as much to do in Vegas as there is in Quincy.

Like I said, sorry if that all sounds bitchy, but I just don't like Vegas. If everyone else wants to take various nationals there, well, I'm in the decided minority so.... enjoy! :)

I will agree on a few points about Vegas not being what it used to be (if you stay on the strip), but Fremont street is what it used to be. The 4 Queens, the Las Vegas Club and the Frontier all offer rooms in the $60-90 range if there isn't a series of large events in town that has the place booked solid. Food is cheap downtown too. There are a number of motor lodges not in downtown proper that offer secure cheap rooming if you know where to look.

I have to admit that I haven't flown there for a few years and always drive, but I know people who jaunt there for weekends and they always get real cheap airfare (like $129 RT SFO/LVN). I guess you just have to shop a bit.

I know of a number of excellent mexican, italian and chinese restaurants not on the strip that are good and reasonably priced.

I don't gamble, but the opportunity for a little night life is all I need in the evening because I am coming in the day before I shoot and leaving right after I shoot. Who goes for the surroundings and outdoor activities other than shooting? Not I ;-)

The Whittington Center is the Raton New Mexico option in this poll.

Great facility, but 2 problems. It's a 4 hour drive to the nearest major airport (Albuquerque, or Denver). It's a very, very small town with very limited facilities.

Otherwise the Whittington Center is a great place to shoot.

I would like to see the nats go to all those places. I'm not talking about 3 gun, that match has requirements the others don't. You could do the pistol in the back to back format just like this year; just move it around the country. I think you would see a lot of new people shoot the match that have not shot a major before. Some might even get the bug and start shooting them. I think this would help the area and sectional matches and local clubs too.

If I recall correctly, the PASA contract calls for only one nationals per year to be held in Barry. Even though the pistol nationals were one match last year, the 3 Gun nationals were held in a different location. I guess the two years the handgun nationals were held in Bend must have been another of those multi-year sweetheart deals, eh? PASA received no more remuneration than any other location where nationals have been held.
