Primers look okay? Have you tried any other powders? What kind of gun is that?
tomjerry1
the primers look good, no sign of over pressure, I have a Caspian, the load shoots pretty good, the sight doesn't move to much, as I stated, I'm new to open guns, just going on advice from whom I bought the gun from, seems to work. I have been shooting a 40 in limited for years so I am not new to the process I will be talking with others locally who have more experience and I will try more powders in the future. ano
3n38 and n105 are the powders from VV to shoot on open major. 340 is WAY TO FAST 3n37 and n350 makes some hefty pressures as well n105 = supersafe all day 3n38 = safe in right ammounts. tomjerry1
It maybe to fast, on the burn chart, 340, 3n37, 3n38 and 105 are all right together. I know from the chart that 340 is faster than the others because it's at the top of them, but how much faster? I will experiment with other powders that are slower and produce more gas, this is a starting point.

ano
its "ohh holy shit" much faster than n105, l at same powerfactor, your gonna have 15-20.000 more PSI of pressure in chamber, and far less gas for comp.

And that charge of N105 is about 1/8th of an inch from spilling from the Super case. I do know people that load N105 in an SC case, but almost all are running a 115 JHP. superdude
Load data in the 38 Super for N340 is interesting. Vihtavuori data 124 Hornady FMJ-FP @ 1.260" OAL, 5.5" barrel: N330 Max 6.4 gr, 1340 fps N340 Max 6.6 gr, 1281 fps 3N37 Max 7.4 gr, 1271 fps N350 Max 6.9 gr, 1275 fps N105 Max 10.4 gr, 1501 fps Sierra Manual (5th Edition, 4th printing), 125 grain and 130 grain bullets (various OALs), 5" barrel: N340 Max 6.8 gr, 1300 fps 3N37 Max 7.8 gr, 1300 fps 3N38 Max 8.7 gr, 1300 fps N105 Max 10.0 gr, 1350 fps (1350 is the highest speed they record for their data in these bullet weights) Compared to (Sierra 125/130 data also): Titegroup Max 6.0 gr, 1300 fps Power Pistol Max 7.8 gr, 1350 fps Silhouette Max 7.3 gr, 1250 fps HS-6 Max 7.9 gr, 1250 fps
tomjerry1
I load 7 gr of VV340, 125 gr HAP, 1.225 oal, Starline SC case, and CCI spp, my pf is 167. There is more room in the case for more powder. The primers are in very good condition, can push this load some more. All of the reading I have done since making the jump to open, is to reduce muzzle movement and keep the dot on the target. I don't know if this is the right combination or not, and understand I will try other combinations, but am not disappointed with the recommendation of this load. Why is SC's case volume smaller? I thought the only difference between Super and SC was that the rim was cut down a bit on SuperComp brass? RH45
When I tried 105, 10 grains was level with the case mouth. I pretty much tried them all, and think 350 is the best choice for MY pistol, which is a "shorty" with 3 holes in the bbl, behind the comp. With the same pistol, if I put in my 9mm bbl, with no holes, Autocomp is my first choice, followed by 350.

Starline's 38 Supercomp case walls near the head might be a little thicker than many companies' 38 Super brass. This would reduce volume.
FullMetalJacket
8.4gn 3n37 38sc 124jhp montana's @ 1.235 oal. I shoot this out of 2 dvc open guns. I switched from 3n38... 38 is too much gas for a gun with no popples.

VV340 is slower than HS6/ WW540 that is an accepted burn rate for open (9 Major in particular) VV340 burn rate is is equal to Silhouette / WAP, SR4756 that are an accepted burn rate for open also. Yes 3N37, 3N38 and N105 are better but if I was ever inclined to do 9 Major N340 would be my power of choice, but I am happy staying with .38SC

Dranoel
I like 3N38, but it can be difficult to get ahold of sometimes. I've used AA#7 for years in my 45s and worked up loads for my 38. Made it feel a lot more like my 45s with less recoil. I think I'll just stick to it for a while.
