  1. The one I handled was a piston. I didn't tear it down so I couldn't see how it functioned. But it was definitely a piston system. May have had a carrier specifically designed for LWCR's rifles or it may have been a Troy knock off suitable for piston systems. The guys at Defender Outdoors would definitely know more about the one I handled.
  2. The vented CF HGs like AP don't heat up, but because they are vented, they allow the heat surrounding the gas black to come through. I had a 2 mag dump one one stage and had to stop when I couldn't handle the rifle any longer. I now keep a lightweight glove on my left hand to help in case I run into the same problem.
  3. Order yourself a few sample packs and see what works for you. I use Clays under my Bayous and haven't had any issues. As far as that burnt plastic smell you get, I don't notice it with Clays but do with others using tightgroup. Or did. Been shooting indoors for 2yrs and I don't notice it anymore. I load mine for IDPA in 9 minor. YMMV.
  4. There is no way a fly fishing vest would cover a gun and mags worn at the waist. They are short for a reason. Yet and still my concealment garment is indeed a fishing vest, so the longer variety do exist. I'm 6'5 so I have to wear my belt a touch higher than normal to pass the scarecrow, but it's the same with the 5.11 et all as well. You shouldn't have to adjust your belt to compensate for your cover garment. It's the other way around. That's why some people pay extra to get a cover garment that is tailored to them. I shoot with several very tall gentlemen. They also had issues with proper cover garments. One call to Armadillo Concealment resolved that. Am I one of those people that dropped $120+ for gamer gear? Yeah. It's a drop in the bucket in comparison to other ongoing sport expenses. I used to use a 5.11 vest. It was good. My custom cover garment was better.
  5. I fondled one while at Defender Outdoors in Fort Worth that was on a wicked looking 2 stamp LWRC. Not my cup of tea. Far too short for my comfort. Like putting a recoil pad on a pistol tube. That's what it felt like to me. Would make for an interesting range toy or ideal hoser carbine match with a full size Aimpoint or Eotech.
  6. I really like them over the 5.11 and Woolrich vests. But if I were to make a suggestion.... At times I'll leave a few rounds in my pocket. To help keep enough inertia when I sweep it. Something that would perform the same function without the loose rounds.
  7. Isn't this what Armadillo Concealment did?
  8. High prices and low availability are a requirement for all things awesome in our sport.
  9. I think I saw shooters connection used to have them.
  10. It's not just the extra recoil. Sure, you can download .40 to be almost as soft as 9mm, but you're still paying more for bullets and brass.
  11. You can either pay someone to mill the back of the slide to get a lower flush fit or call PA and double check that it uses the same mounting plate of the Burris FF. Milling would definitely be the more costly route, but the weight of the sight would be almost offset by the metal removed to mount it.
  12. If they don't pass with hands at sides, they aren't going to pass the scarecrow test either. It would just exaggerate the issue.
  13. Yes, they are fullsize grips. The 126mm mags sit flush.
  14. If they can't load to division capacity, I'd look for another club to shoot with.
  15. Yes, I found it to be an exact clone of Clays. Been using Clay Dot for about a year now and haven't changed from the 3.0gr of Clays I was using and still achieving the same PF.
  16. The Spartan has been dropped from STI's lineup for 2015
  17. I tried HS-6 under some 147gr. The recoil was considerably more than other faster burning powders I used. For minor loads it's also less economical than faster powders.
  18. If there is no one downrange when he pulls out his unloaded gun, you have a rules issue, not a safety issue. If it's a new shooter, was he properly briefed? If not, why not? This is an easy placle for a newbie to misunderstand or make a mistake. I think it's a good idea to assign a partner/mentor to a new competitor, and I also think it's a good idea for the RO to keep close track of him to prevent such mistakes. Those rules are there for our safety. I agree with the points you make. It doesn't change the fact that a rule with the consequence of a DQ was broken. I did it once while still being wet behind the ears. I misunderstood the stage description and thought I had to start at retention. So when the SO saw me draw my pistol, he told me I a very stern manner to holster it. I didn't get a DQ. Should I have? No one was down range. That's makes it less of a safety issue right? Even if he had DQ'd me, I would have still remained to watch and return the following match. If they get so bent out of shape for a DQ this early in the game, they aren't going to have a better attitude later either.
  19. Bring it to the MD's attention. If that doesn't do anything, maybe involving the club pres may be needed. Again, if the behavior isn't modified, if ask to not be squaded with them or find another club.
  20. There should be no leniency with safety. That's a DQ.
  21. I was thinking of the all steel manual safety compact as well. I was planning on using the Canik Stingray but the ambi safeties are way too wide. Nothing a few beers and a dremel can't fix.
  22. Your 4 year old .... what? Typo? 14yr old?
  23. But after you do harpoon your chrony, be sure to take a pic.
  24. Love the color contrast!
