  1. There is also a 3 gun match 5th sunday in wilmore
  2. For the open steel challenge 22 I use the midway "tactical pistol case" Its a good sized case with mag holders on the outside one one side and 2 pouches for batteries, etc on the other
  3. Welcome to the sport. Where In KY were you from? There are planty of competitions around the state to get into
  4. Like the rugers myself with the 1911 grips. Mine has a Cmore sitting on top, 1911 grips and the mag release is drilled and tapped for an ed brown button. The disassembly really is overrated. If you have any mechanical skills, if you see it done once its easy to do again.
  5. I dont view calling hits on long rifle steel as coaching, they are simply calling the score out. On new shooters I say coach away as an RO. Around here we have had quite a few brand new action shooters(ie never shot a pistol match even) show up for the 3 gun matches. Coule that with 2 people who have shot before on a squad of like 10-11 and there was quite a bit of coaching etc before hand. Alot of it was safety related how to avoid getting sent home etc. Gets ready to put a shotgun/rifle down reminded to engage the safety etc. Keeping the mouth shut would have probibally cut the squad down to under half by the end of the match.
  6. I have found I shoot better without much light on either side. If I have too much light, its fine up close but gets very sloppy at distance. Currently switching mine over to a fatter front sight. I think I am going to order a .120 front with a .125 rear for my 6 inch gun.
  7. If your shooting low gun for the non 8 stations, make sure the gun starts moving when you see the bird. Move the gun as you are mounting it. I always shot with a doubles foot position on all the targets weather i it was singles or doubles. On singles the center stake is about as far as I would take 4. I always went for a decent amount before the stake to provide time for the turn and reaquire and shot in doubles. My practice consisted of primarily 95 percent doubles and mainly 3-4-5 doubles. All singles shots were placed like their respective place in doubles. Your reflexes play a big part in where your shooting the shots. My low 8 was pretty unconventional. I would basically smoke it straight ahead with very little swing at all. It was more a lift gun up into it and smoke it on the way out. The main reason I shot it like that was the quicker it was hit the less the wind could move it even on a very windy day. For a good video, I would say check out the todd bender video which is shot with the eye cam. Good way to see the hold and break points then tweak it for what works for you.
  8. Snow fense is designed to have the holes in in and is considered solid. The tarp (as would be the same as a board) had holes cut in it which is what a port is, a hole cut in the board or in this case tarp. If its a very windy match, you would probibally be better served with snow fense anyway. If durability is a concern, there is a match in OH that uses very heavy duty snow fense for their walls not the flimsy stuff
  9. So what is the difference in a port cut in the tarp and a slit cut in the tarp. It could easily be argued they are ports also since they were cut in the tarp same as the port
  10. The key to improving is staying with the fundamentals. On the low 5, check your hold point. If its a little high, its easy to loose sight of the target and go right over it. Also what kind of foot postionn, break point etc are you using? Is it the low or high on 8 your having trouble with? Is the station 8 miss coming at the end of an otherwise clean round? On the sight picture, you need to trust yourself and not check the sight picture. You really need to trust yourself as there is not a whole lot of time to excute the shot if yourjumping back between the gun and the target you stand a good chance of missing. The good shooters are not afraid to miss.
  11. Have a spartan 9mm and love it. Recoil is almost none. I also feel I shoot it better than the 45. The main reason for the 40 cal 1911 is shooting the same ammo in SS and limited. The brass is also about half the cost of 45 brass and much easier to find
  12. Never had any problem with the 100 round value packs from federal. Alot of times I will use the $4.77 1oz loads without issue. Winchester seems to be the worst of the value pack. Gun is a remington 1100. I have seen bad batches of ammo in every single one of the major ammo companies premium or not from time to time. I had some AA 410 shells that had plastic flashing over the primer which caused duds. Easy fix on the hull problems is examine the shells before you use them
  13. Shoot slugs through mine with the Bead sight just fine. I find the bead much easier to use for clays(especially arial) and steel. Around here probibally 99percent of the shots are with shot so bead just works best for me. I do come from a shotgun background so very use to the bead. I would try it out and see how you do with the bead first with different slugs
  14. You can cover the serial number you just cant remove it. Think SW revolvers with larger than std grips, and mossberg shotguns with a side saddle. Serial number is there but not visible
  15. Have a Kydex for mine. I had considered a race holster but will probibally just stay with the Kydex. For me the Kydex just feels more secure and I dont have to worry about locking it for weird start positions. I just dont feel comfortable laying down with an unlocked gun even in the "secure" raceholsters without the lock on when a little slip and Im done for the day. Same goes for the movement in 3 gun. For steel only it might make a difference where it is only unlocked for a brief moment. For other stuff 3 gun in paticular where there can be alot of movement with the gun in the holster the benefit isnt worth the risk
  16. +1 on shotguns and double rifles being expensive. My skeet gun sells in the 14K range and that that is far from their "top end" guns
  17. On the Chrono at locals I have never seen it for the simple reason whos gonna do it? I don't see a list of people willing to sit there shooting everyones ammo over the chrono and not shoot the match nor do I see anyone willing to offer up a chrono to let everyone shoot their gun across and see how long it is before it gets shot. On the calibration, it really isnt common here to do it as most will just shoot it till it falls. Basically shortest barrel 9mm on the squad pops it a little low with factory ammo. Regardless of the "correct" way I just don't see it changing when its a volunteer sport and the RM/MD can't even enjoy the match they put on having to deal with running to calibrate steel, setting up a chrono etc. Also the fact chrono adds an extra "stage" to the match to stick around for. At a level 1 local match with some bragging rights for the week, people let the small non safety issues go
  18. Placing my vote in the keep as much on the belt as you want, you just cant use it list.
  19. Tennifer is not the finish applied to the glocks that you see. Tennifer is a metal treatment. The finish that you see is not the tennifer
  20. I talked with an owner of the SV grip who said it needs the new SV mags as the STI ones wont fit. If they did I would have a sent on my gun now
  21. Just be safe and get the regular dawsons and not the SNL. From what I have seen the regular dawsons in a STI tube have plenty to spare. The SNL is giving up that wiggle room
