I'm a veterinarian. So it is understood I care about and for animals. A client asked how I felt about what happened and should they have tried to tranquilize the animals. I told him I was saddened by the magnitude of the problem and the deaths, but that it was the only way. To tranquilize the animals requires the necessary equipment, which includes the tranquilizer gun, the drugs, an adequate vehicle to transport the animal, and then enough bodies to not only pick the animal up, but then recover the animal from the anesthesia. Not to mention we need a place to put the animal for safe keeping. To round up 50+ animals and "save" them would have required a small army of people, dart guns, and a large number of vehicles with cages sufficient to transport them. And this needed to be done IMMEDIATELY. No time for any of that. If one human being had been injured or one life lost, then it would not be worth saving any of the animals.
With John Q. Public at great risk, and no resources, the public had to be protected. There was no other option in my opinion but to shoot and kill the animals. It was nice that they were able to spare a handful. I think we are all in awe of the giant cats, and I'm sure the deputies and police took no gratification in performing this service. Now watch all the ignorant tree-hugging, bleeding-heart liberals come out of the woodwork bashing and criticizing the police for their actions. They aren't the bad-guys. It's all the socially inept morons out there that are craving attention and respect from others by having an exotic dangerous animal for a pet. And when they can no longer care for them or don't want them anymore there's few places to put them. The guy taking care of these animals had a huge heart and was doing what he could. Apparently he went off the deep end and you know the rest of the story.
