jlweems
The blue team's strategy was stupid. Go first hit the middle target so you can go either direction if you get blocked. Chris T. did screw the pooch with his one miss. If he hits that Jay is blowing darts. Oh well. The blue team's strategy was stupid. Go first hit the middle target so you can go either direction if you get blocked. Chris T. did screw the pooch with his one miss. If he hits that Jay is blowing darts. Oh well. yep against Kyle If Chris had hit that throw, isn't it likely that Blue would have pulled out the win?

SJ
I liked this episode a lot, good strategy considerations in the team challenge and then a tense elimination (or at least edited that way). I have no problem at all with them using 'hawks, blowguns, throwing knives, or anything weird like that. Probably better for getting new people into the sports too, since it can be done in most people's backyards. I would enjoy atl-atls, grenade tossing, mortars, whatever involves hitting a target using ability, athletic gifts, etc. If it wasn't so overexposed already, and so biased by prior competitor experience, I could see basketball shots or golf closest to the pin (and I hate the full form of both sports). Hit that target, it can all be a competition. Just breadth versus depth of specialization, to me the Top Shot is the person at 95% of a lot of skills/weapons versus 100% at only one. It goes against the Survivor-esque rules of the current show and the director's search for personal conflict, but I'd like to see some kind of continued competition over the course of the show, with a leaderboard where the low person gets cut each week. That would smooth out the crap shoot of what weapons are used each week and be interesting to see if the long-term results favor specialists or all-rounders. Anyways, yes it was odd how Joe suddenly seemed to show up. On Kyle, not sure if they don't like him for being a shotgunner, or being young, or having spiky hair, or what... sperman
If Chris had hit that throw, isn't it likely that Blue would have pulled out the win? No. If Chris makes the throw, they are back to even, but It's Red teams turn, so they have the advantage. This is what the board would have looked like if Chris made his hit. X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X B R B X X X B R X X X X R B X X X X X X X Red doesn't have many options, but as long as they keep making their hits, Blue's only choice is to block. When there were 2 red dots and 2 blue dots on the board, blue should have made an aggressive move. That would have forced red to block their move, and blue would have maintained an advantage. By blocking, they gave the advantage back to red. Look at what happens if Blue team makes a different choice after 4 hits. Now blue can work in 3 different directions, and two of those directions are open on both ends. X X X X X X X X X X X X X X B B X X X X X B R X X X X R X X X X X X X X (I can't believe I'm disussing "connect four" strategy on Enos forums. I think it's time to go to bed. )

jar
Given the experience of some pretty high level IPSC shooters on Top Shot, and considering the risk of elimination that does not depend on shooting skill, the risk to professional and personal reputation, and the hugh time commitment, I have to applaud those who are willing to take this on, and don't at all blame those that don't. I think I remember reading/hearing somewhere that that's why Matt Burkett didn't do it. Too much time and reputational risk, especially the first season, having no idea what the producers would do. I'm guessing Taran made the same decision, possibly with input from Matt.
kdmoore
blowguns are sketchy at best. I think they are used with poison for hunting. But tomahawks? Cmon, that' stretching it! I'd guess that 95% of tomahawk usage was hand to hand swinging (knives too). I don't see it as a viable throwing weapon, certainly no better than throwing a hammer or a large rock. Hollywood antics at their best. Did they talk about hunting with a tomahawk? Seriously? I liked the idea of historical weapons, I just thought they should be launched weapons. A better challenge for the tomahawk would have been lumberjackesque. But the compelling show is what pays the bills ... and it has to be compelling to the masses. Wondering if Daryl's observation .. "best way to take a shooter out is on a non shooting competition" was premeditated (was that a goal before the voting) or just opportunistic (more likely). I think he's in better shape ... he should be able to avoid elimination rounds from here on out. They value his input and he seems able to take them should he get into an elimination. They will merge teams in a show or two anyways ... so Chris's departure is advantageous ... as it would have been for Chris if he won. Shotgun has got to be coming. I'd sure like to see a more tactical approach with it (slugs and buck at static targets ... maybe even mix them) ... the shotgun is too versatile to only be shot at flying targets. They should do both.

The best it can do is move the winner up "one level" within the shooting community only. So a nobody can move up to a "somewhat known" midlevel person and possibly small short-lasting sponsorships (barring future wins). A midlevel person can move up to be a household name with some big sponsorships. The big names have nowhere higher/more lucrative to go, so there's no career reward. And seeing Seekander last season, a significant downside risk. Edited March 18, 2011 by SJ

Although I have no facts to base it on, I am willing to bet that Seeklander sold a few more copies of his new book to people outside of the typical realm of competition shooters based on his exposure being expanded to the masses of "average joe's" who watch top shot.
