  1. If you want to shoot real irons, there may not be a better gun for it than an M1A, as long as it is set up properly. Mine is bedded, with a 1967 SAK barrel (Maremont) and served me well at the first He Man Nationals.
  2. It depends on the matches you plan on shooting. Obviously the He Man Nationals needs a .308 unless you want to wear a tiara.
  3. I guess I'm just too old and slow to go with shorter barrels. My LR308 has a 20 inch, rifle length gas barrel on it. I do attend the He Man Nationals, with targets past 500 yards in my defense.
  4. Handloads or factory? I've experienced that some dies don't allow for enough sizing of the brass to chamber and extract easily. My .308 needed .005 removed from the bottom of the die to enable ammo to be easily extracted. The other thing I would check is that the gas port is not partially covered by the gas block.
  5. First thing, lube the hell on the bolt carrier, bolt and gas rings. In the past, I have taken the gas rings to a Scotch Brite wheel to smooth them out. 400 wet / dry paper will do the same thing, just slower.
  6. Some guns will need it, others won't. If you see marks on the head of the guide rod that weren't there before, yes, you need to do it.
  7. What length barrel, and what division are you planning on?
  8. Hornady 55 FMJ in bulk are an excellent value, less expensive than "cheap" fmj's. Just keep your eyes open and take advantage of sales. H335 like most ball powders like to be run with a heavier load. I've run 25.5 grains of it with any 55 grain bullet for years. Keeping the bolt carrier lubed keeps the gun running, cleaning maybe twice a year.
  9. The shoulder for the slide to impact is set father back on a Commander than a Government Model. You may wind up with the spring bottoming out before the slide contacts the recoil spring guide and therefore the frame. I think you need to set the shoulder back around an 1/8th of an inch to avoid coil bind. The correct dimension may be slightly more, or less.
  10. Moly coated bullets on rifle bullets is not the same stuff as cast pistol bullets. I tried it when I shot High Power, saw no advantage, it required more powder for the same velocity due to the reduction of pressure due to the coating. Hornady does not make a 62 grain FMJ. If you want small groups use match bullets, or varmint bullets, such as V-Max, Ballistic Tips or Blitz King.
  11. This is what I do to lifters. I don't weld, but can silver braze pretty well. It still guides the shell into the chamber and is long enough not to bite my thumb.
  12. For us, the tiny bit of snow will be nice, but, it melts fast.
  13. Our plans are Prescott or that part of the state. A few more years to go.
  14. Lancer has carbon fiber handguards for DPMS pattern .308's.
  15. Wynn, Is it the MOA or MRAD version? Read the manual that came with the scope to start.
  16. Get a 6 inch slide / 5 inch spring plug, then just use Government model springs. STI makes them. Is the gun a bushing or bull barrel?
  17. At least a 30 second penalty per stage. If the shooter can't / won't read the rules for the declared division, they deserve a hard lesson.
  18. Larry, The X-S rear is not noticeable when shooting stationary or aerial targets, but, if you need it for slugs, it's worth the price. Tom has been working on the Stoeger shotguns for some time and has the modifications down pat.
  19. Competitors should not have had to fire 5 stages in a single day. It should have been 3, 3 and 4 stages daily.
