zhunter
This thread was born out of a previous thread of similar title for .40 I will post my results when I get Home in a couple of weeks and get to the range to Chrono. But I am planning on using: Either Titegroup or Clays, most likely Clays CCI #300 AOL 1.245 Montana Gold JHP 230 gr To be shot out of a 5" Springfield Loaded, stock barrel
SmittyFL
Hey Z, I'm running a similar set up. But with Fed primers and Precision Delta 230's. I use 4.2 of clays at 1.25 OAL Gives me about 171PF
zhunter
Smitty I am going to start at 4.0 and go from there. All the parts for the XL650 conversion from .40 to .45 are awaiting my return, as are the reloading components
tightloop
I would use Clays but I have about 5 lbs of 231 left over...so I am going to use a 200 gr #68 H&G over 5.6 of 231 WW cases and Fed primers, OAL 1.245, crimp at .470 Get with it, Z!!!! JakeMartens
200gr leaad SemiWad Cutter (magnus bullets or bullet works) 4.3gr of Clays Winchester Large magnum primers 1.255 oal .471 crimp 830-840fps I like this better than when I was using 230gr Montana Gold ball, it is snappier, but less of a torque feeling that was getting with the heavier bullet. Clays and lead bullets are a little smokey.
LPatterson
This link shows the affect different cases have on velocity.WST & 226gr MasterBlaster I have found that 4.4gr of American Select will give me the same velocity with less snap than WST & less smoke than Clays or TG. Velocity was 765-794 Av 778 175.8 PF from a Schuemann AET barrel going down to 4.3 for Winchester cases. During last weekends level 1 Single Stack match, you could pick out the TG shooters by the residue around the muzzle. When the sunlight was right you could see the bullet flash going down range. I don't think everyone was making PF.
Harmon
berry 185 FP Clays powder 5.0 grains at 1.210 oal federal 150 mixed brass This load makes 168 power factor in my gun...and FEELS good. Im gonna play with some Ramshot ZIP later today and see what that comes up with. harmon
tightloop
Now Leroy, you don't know they weren't making PF....could have been some select powder combo you don't know about...
nipplehead
Zero 230 grain FMJ N310 4.2 grains !.250 OAL Makes 168 PF out of my Kart barreled 1911 Very soft and consistant
EricW
230 gr. over W231. There's cleaner stuff out there, but man is that stuff consistent. Whatever you do - don't use Universal Clays in 45. There isn't enough pressure in 45ACP to generate consistent velocities, or even reliable functioning for that matter.
LPatterson
Now Leroy, you don't know they weren't making PF....could have been some select powder combo you don't know about... True, I don't know they weren't making PF & it could have been some magic powder. But I have seen lots of Open guns with more recoil. Oh, did I mention I was the RO standing right behind them. JFD
+1 to avoiding Universal Clays. Definitely not a good powder for .45 loads. Plain old Clays is so much better.
Alan Meek
Using ~4.3 clays Precision Delta 230gr FMJ WW LP PRimers Assorted cases
yoshidaex
4.2 Clays over a 230 Berrys PRN @ 1.26 Oal for a PF of 170 with Federal LPP. I get 175 PF with CCI primers. Can anyone answer why? I thought they were all the same except for cup hardness. Edited July 13, 2006 by yoshidaex
Singlestack
5.0 gr VN320 under a 200 gr SWC @ 1.245. Clean and consistant.
TonyT
I have usew 3.8 to 4.2 gr. of either WST or American Select behind the 230 gr. FMJ's or plated bullets with excellent results. For the 185 gr. Star LSWCHP 3.8 r. of HS-700S and R 2.5 gives ca 720 fps in my guns. The same bullet with 3.8 gr. VV N-310 and WLP gives ca. 790 fps.

JFD
The loads I worked up for my wife's L-10 Kimber are: Practice load: Cast 220 grain RN (from a Lee mould) - Blue Angel lube 3.7 grain Clays 1.248 OAL Win primers 762 FPS = 168 PF This load has the least smoke of any I've tried, and I've tried a bunch. Match load: Rainier 230 grain RN 3.95 Clays 1.263 OAL Win primers 726 FPS = 167 PF (Will bump this to 172 PF during the next run)
Bob Hostetter
Finally ran out of Winchester 231 so I went to buy some Clays to try. Local store didn't have any but they had American Select so I picked up a pound. Loaded up some 200 gr LSWC's with 4.6 gr's and tried them yesterday. Haven't had a chance to chrono them yet but the factory website stated 4.0 would get you 780 fps so 4.6 should be close to major. If it is, is feels very good, alot better then 231. A little sharper, but overall noticeably softer (that doesn't sound right but I know what I meant).

Bob Hostetter
452? They stopped making it? Gee, I have several lbs of it sitting right next to 16 lbs of 540.......
steel1212
So it looks like to me that clays or VV310 is the way to go with .45? Would you clays users use VV310 if it was cheaper?

OF UNIQUE. GIVES A 175PF OUT OF MOST 5" 45ACP. USE MAG PRIMERS TO BURN A LITTLE CLEANER. BULLETS MUST BE VERY HARD CAST. SR4756 8.2GR WITH A 200GR XTP IS A VERY NICE LOAD FOR BOTH 5" AND 4.25" BARRELS.
