New Open mags

Getting back into open and need to upgrade mags (currently running old STI tubes and unknown (I have forgotten) innards)

Limcat DragonCat in 38 super

It seems like the MBX are the most popular.  Thoughts?  I am interested more in reliability than cramming in the last possible round.  I am not worried about the price difference.

Finally, it used to be that you bought 3-4 140s and a big stick and then you were set, but now there are 155s.  What are people using those for?

thanks

Brad

2-3 140's and a 170 seems to work where ever I go.

BUT

I still use old STI mags and TTI or Grams guts.  They still work fine so why fix what isn't broke!

It's about the only thing I haven't broke from STI

I just recently got into open and had the same discussion. STI gen 2 vs MBX, it seemed like I could save a few dollars with the gen 2’s but I’d have to tinker with them a little to make them run 100%. I knew that my gun would run MBX’s since that’s what was recommended and I borrowed for a little while.

Ultimately I decided to go the MBX route because I knew they ran and I haven’t had a single issues with them in the last couple months.

As far as what lengths to run, I find myself running a 155 and 170 most often. I have a 140 but after practicing with the 155 on reloads so much the 140 almost feels too short now. On stages that require a reload I think my new plan is to start with a 140 and reload to a 155.

For the past few years, on almost any stage, I start with a 170

and reload with a 140.

But, I haven't tried the 155's yet.

I keep all MBX in my bag. I've never had any issues with them and they have run right out of the package. No need to tune them. I keep 2 of each size in my bag. 140, 155 and 170. I mostly run just the 170 but if I need to reload I'll run either of the 155 or 140 depending on my mood.

MBX have ran great in all my guns. One thing I did learn was that the springs are a little weak and should be changed on a regular routine. I now change them every six months regardless.

Once you try the 155 you may not go back. So much easier to reload!

+1 I do the same with my MBX

Are you saying the 155 are easier to reload than a 140?

The3Un4given  above says that after practicing with the 155's,

the 140's seem too short.

Since I've been reloading with the 140's, it's difficult for me to

reload my BHP - the mags seem Very Small, even though

they hold a whopping 15 rounds.

I was advised against 155's so I bought 170's and 140 MBX. With the trend being all 32 round courses these days I can go several matches and never touch a 170. I just run 140's and find a good reload spot.

I’m pretty curious as to why you were advised against the 155?

This thread is interesting. it's really the first time I'm hearing people praise the 155.  Up until now, most people I know have said it's slower to reload than 140 mags.

I've never tried a 155, so I don't have first hand knowledge.  Intuitively, though it seems that the shorter mag would be easier to reload.  If longer was easier, then why wouldn't we just carry 170s.

I can't reload with a 170 as quickly as with a 140.

And, it's not a lot of fun running with two 170 's on my belt.

I agree that’s why I’m surprised with people saying the 155 is faster than the 140.

@LuvDog @Hi-Power Jack

For me it seems like the 155 has just enough to grab onto as well as enough sticking out of the bottom that it walks that balancing line of not too much and not enough really well.

Now when I reload with a 140 it almost seems like my palm is flush with the bottom of the mag well.

You up should give one a shot, worst case you don’t like it and sell it on here. I doubt an MBX mag will be in the classifieds for long.

The extra length of the 155 makes it that much easier to reload. That being said, I had a 155 go flying off my belt while running and the extra weight and higher center of gravity is a real issue. That’s why I won’t use 170 for reloads.

I have been using STI 140 and 170 mags for years with no problem. Trick is to maintain correct measurements, change springs yearly, clean mags after each stage, and check the condition of the follower. Just want mine to work vs cramming in as many rounds as possible.
