Your favorite 40 caliber load (major)

Was interested in knowing what your favorite load is for the 40 caliber load is.

Trust me, I understand this is like opening pandora's box, but I was just wondering what works well for you and this will give me something to look at when I start to reload 40's. I already reload 45's but that doesn't help much with the smaller caliber.

I understand for an open gun the slower burning powders matched up with lighter bullets is the way to go. For limited the faster burning powders with heavier bullets are the ticket.

Now I'm just curious to see what works best for you.

By the way, I have an SVI combination open (6 port hubrid) and limited top 40.

Thanks for your input.

Para P16-40 Stock 5" barrel

4.7 gr Titegroup

180 West Coast Plated RNFP

Win Small Pistol Primer

Asst Brass

Seated 1.175" OAL

I generally tend to get ~175 pf give or take.

I used to use:

5.0 Win 231

Bear creek Moly coated 180 TC

Win SP Primers

Seated to 1.190" OAL

Asst Brass

The Titegroup load is a tad cleaner and doesn't smoke like the Bear Creeks.

STI long dust cover, 5" Limcat tungsten sleeved barrel, heavy recoil master.

3.5/3.6 gr. N310 under a LaserCast 200 grain'r.

1.220" OAL, very little crimp & WSR primers.

Sounds a bit like a .45 bullseye load.

Very soft felt recoil, decent groups at distance.

I do get some smoke and barrel leading but the LaserCast hardness was a big improvment over some of the softer lead bullets that I have tried.

Be careful of double charges but you do save on powder ;)

Ken,

If you like shooting cast, you might want to look at Cheycast Bullets in Cheyenne. I bought 5,000 cast round nose from him and have been very pleased with them. I weighed about 20 of them and they ran anywhere from 199 to 202 grains. They are all nicely lubed and well made with no evidence of a cold mould etc.

I wish I still lived close to Cheyenne, as I wouldn't mind getting another batch from him. I'm about out now.

180 gr MG FMJ

Federal Primers

5.0 gr titegroup

1.15" oal

various brass.

In my Briley 5", I run about 935 fps for a pf of about 170

My son's gun, a STI Edge shooting the same load will have about 975 fps on the same load. ;)

Another good example of why you should always crono YOUR load for YOUR gun.

4.8 N320

180 MG JHP

1.138" OAL

.420" crimp

WSP

mixed brass

Two SV Infinity standard dust-covers w/Schuemann barrels, tungsten guide rods. Makes about 168-169 PF out of both pistols. Groups tend to range 1" to 1.5" @ 25yds. Softest load I've found, yet. :)

(Titegroup also works well, but has sharper felt recoil to me)
