  1. Beautiful pistol Quack. I'm in a similar boat as the OP. I think I've finally decided to go with the CZ SP01 Shadow. To stay production legal, can one generally use the 17 round Mec Gar magazines with SP base pads?
  2. I use a 1-5 with an illuminated horseshoe dot reticle. The biggest advantage for me is knowing if my battery dies, I still have large enough reticle at 1x. The reticle staying the same size is a bonus to me that keeps my simple brain happy. I don't like really complicated thoughts when I'm shooting. At 1x keeping the illuminated large outer circle is great for very close targets. Sometimes if the stage design allows I can set an intermediate power (~1.5-3ish) to outline small circle plates so my eye can line up the concentric circles but that's a small chance occurrence. Most of the matches around me are bay style hose fest rifle stages and my optic works well enough for that. We do have one good match that will put small to medium sized steel rifle targets anywhere from 75 to 500 yards which is where there's less of a difference between first and second focals at max power anyways. Scores on those stages seem to determine match finish more than the bay stages with 10 rifle paper targets at 20 yards (or feet ). At a certain quality of glass and durability, optic choice is personal preference and local match design.
  3. Under Armor heat gear is about the only thing I wear in Texas summer. Light enough to let the breeze and still durable enough to not shred with heavy use. I also wear them in winter with UA leggings to keep me warm.
  4. Thanks for the feedback hops. I like the idea of a "game ready" gun that gives me budget room to acquire all the other items needed to compete in SS. Since I'm just starting out, it sounds like the only drawback (holster) wont be too much of an issue since I can just order something that will fit straight away. Would love to know how accuracy goes with these. Off to search for the unicorn to feel in person to feel it.
  5. What did the person say that swayed you to the Max model? I'm looking for something to play in single stack as well. I had been pricing out a SA range officer but the Max may come out ahead. Most everything I would want to add appears to already be added to a base model for competition. My big question would be how the trigger feels which may be hard to test given the likely high demand for this model.
  6. Love the grips. What are they? Been following this since the RO is next on my list most likely.
  7. The good news is that the RCI tubes with the captured followers work really well and are just a phone call away. My port wasn't spitting out the stock follower but the tube I picked up came with a captured follower. If you do go with a new receiver (and can find one) definitely heed the advice above and find someone that opens up ports the right way. There's a list of places at the top of the shotgun section that do port work. See if any of those guys are local to you and try to find examples of their work at a match.
  8. My Adams (piston version) LW BCG has been great for me. Recoil impulse was noticeably lighter in both an Adams mid-length and an Adams rifle length piston setup. I like it so much that I ordered a Voodoo upper (DI) with their LW BCG to use. If that one turns out well, I'll probably get a second DI version for another project. As an aside, I do prefer the Adams/Voodoo coating compared to phosphate, chrome and even NiB coated alternatives. They seem to clean up much easier. Might not matter as much to you, but less time cleaning for me is more time for other things. I usually hear back from Adams within a day or two of sending them a question via email. They always take the time to answer my questions so I've been happy over about a year or so in dealing with them.
  9. Inside of 100 yd I would suggest an Eotech if you want glass or just plain irons. The Eotech reticle is just silly fast for paper close up. We do 22 steel matches at a cowboy action range, big close targets. Having that big 65 moa circle is a huge advantage compared to a dot only style reticle like an Aimpoint for quick transitions. I have a Burris XTRII and its great close in at 1x as well. The horseshoe is super bright and fast compared to illuminated dot only reticles. I got the 1-5 to hit targets out to 500 though. If you go with the Burris you won't be disappointed, but there may be other options that better fill your 1-100yd only role.
  10. Something to keep in mind if you shoot regularly with friends, it can be helpful to have a similar platform. Both myself and my shooting buddy have ELS belts. We do either USPSA or 3-Gun every weekend. I really appreciate being able to quickly add an extra rifle/pistol mag holder or add a couple shot shell caddies for those long shotgun stages. I prefer the ELS style of quick detach but the Tek-Lok's also work well for quick swapping between people if you need that extra piece of gear for a stage.
  11. Awesome, thanks for the confirmation ! I'll keep my eyes peeled for another one of these popping up
  12. Looks like they did ship out some, one up on GB for $3,000. That seems a little crazy with the DVC being $2,600! Anyone know if STI plans on producing more of these? I really like the look, but I'm praying the MAP/MSRP are well below that auction list price.
  13. I really like how that red turned out! Glad to hear it's running well. Have you put any slugs or buck through it yet?
  14. I'd buy the double stack in a heartbeat, limited edition or not. I think it looks fantastic!
  15. From my experience talking to Tooth and Nail, they are very willing to work with you to set up the gun how YOU want it. I have seen a big increase in the number of 1919's in matches around here. The T&N models run. That was my reasons for deciding against picking up a 1919 and upgrading it myself. Slowly putting away for the big purchase, but I know it will be amazing when it happens
  16. Mark, do you know if anyone has done quantitative evaluations of tube fed shotgun recoil? I remember seeing a video of comparing shotguns (+/-) mid-barrel compensators strapped to a sled using high speed video and both muzzle rise and distanced the apparatus traveled rearward to get a comparison for the percent recoil reduction for the compensated model. The reason I ask is I was in a similar position with regard to the OP. Wife chose the M2 because it was lighter than the VM. I can't tell the difference between a VM and an M2 on the clock, but I can barely tell the difference between an 870 and a VM unless I shoot slugs. In the absence of having all choices available for a new to shoot simultaneously, it might be valuable to get rough estimates for the comparative amount of recoil between different tube fed guns.
  17. A shoelace works in a pinch as well. Wrap it and give the lace a good tug. Sure does
  18. This may be a bit of a drive, but Cawthon Cartridge Club out in Navasota has plenty of bays and open fields to shoot your shotgun if you're looking for a long term private range. Memberships are a bit pricey, but the facilities they have are damn useful. They have USPSA and 3-gun monthly matches which definitely take advantage of the area available at the range. Don't worry about your shotgun being frowned on, the only guys we look at strange because of their shotguns are Open Division shooters (but that's because we are all jealous of the box mag "unloaded shotgun starts" )
  19. Recently there have been quite a few manufacturers coming out with ready to go 3-gun models. You might add a line in an Excel comparison to see if any of those manufacturers have a model that include the majority of parts you're interested in. If you do build, barrel, scope, trigger are places to pay for the quality items to echo what others have said. If you're going scope, clarity of glass is important but don't forget the reticle. Trigger and scope reticle are things that would be nice to try and feel to see if they work for you. I went with the Burris XTRII 1-5 based on the reviews on this site and the horseshoe-dot reticle. Unless you want to build a slick side upper or a side charger, there's not too much to gain there. There are lowers with flared mag wells, but unless your club reloads from the belt a ton I can't see that being critical. Filling out the lower, try to find a parts kit that either has the grip/trigger option you want or use the LPK from Shooters Source that excludes trigger/grip so you can choose your own. JP springs also make a mediocre trigger a good trigger. To answer your second question, DI has less reciprocating mass and less mass out away from the shooter. They also have fewer parts. Having said that, I'm a piston fan because carbon and other crap go out the barrel, not in my action. I shoot my piston gun more because it takes 1/10th the time to clean compared to my DI guns. I don't feel the difference in recoil between the two, both 16" mid-lengths. If you are a piston fan, there are low profile piston systems that are designed to fit under most hand guards as well as low mass bolt options for piston.
  20. Nope. I was told Brian Enos was a democracy! I would vote for you getting a vote, if maroon was a color option Also, no comparison. The TTI's are rock solid, I'm not sure I could break them if I wanted to. Buy them for the simple design, love them for the style.
  21. Yes! I'm in for PMAG and M&P mag extensions the moment they are announced in Maroon! The red ones I have will go to a good home with my little sister, she didn't go to A&M
  22. There's a friendly debate whether the red or blue finish is better for the extensions. If there were a maroon finish available, well, let's just say there would be less disagreement! Sign me up for the pre-order
  23. Is this official for 2015? Just curious if this could also apply to local 3GN club matches.
  24. I would never eliminate heavy, it's simply too much fun for the people that shoot it. Yes, changing the scoring would probably give me a push to shoot HM now instead of later as the only thing keeping me out of HM division currently is the cost of ammo. Once I get out of grad school and start reloading that excuse goes away...and gives me an reason to get a new set of toys
