Steve Moneypenny Posted August 31, 2004 Share Posted August 31, 2004 Ok, I'm considering (more like planning) to build the ULTIMATE IDPA ESP gamer gun. i would like to know of other peoples thoughts on this, i am going to post my idea. feel free to let me know what you think. Caliber, 9x19mm Single stack 1911 Caspian frame. intergal mag well. Commander slide. Lightened a little, (legally) Bar-sto barrel, extrude honed. Scott Warren Rear sight. Langdon front (pattent pending) Ambi saftey, Disabled beaver tail high swept. Under cut trigger guard. tri-glide trigger (if made for 1911) various titanium parts, very light hammer. about a 2# trigger pull. What are your thoughts/ideas, what did i leave out what should i add? Caspian Slide (flat-top, serrated) KKM Barrel Ed Brown Grip & Thumb Safety SV Trigger (breaks just under 2 pounds) Caspian Hammer (Long story ) High cut and hand checkered 20 lpi. S&A Magwell (machined out for larger opening) Bomar rear sight (but, I like the idea of the fixed rear) Custom fiber optic front sight (the fiber sits alittle lower to give sharp top edge for crisp sight picture for the long shots) I use "Burner" grit grips now. Might want to get an extra super barrel too, I know a lot of guys who feel the super has an edge in reliability so they will throw in the super barrel for major matches. RE: 9+1. vincent Posted August 31, 2004 Share Posted August 31, 2004 If you get a 9mm 1911 single stack built be sure to get it done by someone who knows how to make one work. They can be pretty finicky. Load the rounds long. For me the 147's worked the best because the are easier to load long. Also it may not run with really light 9mm loads without some tweaking of the slide and/or springs. You can get into a problem with balancing the need for the recoil spring to be strong enough to strip a round from a fully loaded magazine (at slide lock) and light enough to allow the gun to cycle (feed/eject) with a fully loaded mag pressing on the bottom (after tac load). This can also lead to playing with the magazine springs and mainsprings to get things "just right". I found it easier to just figure out the recoil spring that worked and just keep bumping-up the load until it had enough power to work the system. The difference in power factor isn't worth a single malfunction. Magazines are very important and may take some experimentation. After trying lots of brands/models mine liked Metalform 9 round .38 super mags the best, but other guy's guns liked different mags. I haven't tried the new style Metalform 9mm mags with the "ramp". These issues eventually pushed me to a factory SVI double-stack 9mm gun. The doublestack has run great (everything SV in both guns and mags). The only modification I had to do was sand on the followers to get them high enough to lock the slide back. There is a little wedge on the side of the follower skirt that needs to be removed. ---------------------- All this being said I don't think a 9mm 1911 is that much more of a gamer gun than a Glock 34 with good sights, a match barrel (if needed), tweaked THE magwell, and trigger job. It will be a lot easier to get a trick G34 100% than a 9mm 1911, and taking magazine prices into the picture the total package will be cheaper as well. Since you are so severely restricted in IDPA, I'm of the opinion that any wide-body 1911 pistol would be a good gamer gun, STI Eagle, Para P16-40 etc. Bomar rear, fiber optic front with a legal magwell is all you really need to blow the field away. Most, if not all the IDPA masters I have seen have had some sort of STI/SV/Para wide-body. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

vincent Posted August 31, 2004 Share Posted August 31, 2004 I had one built up this year for IDPA ESP so it's all still fresh in my mind. A 5" SV 2011 gun with Bomar rear, SV fiber optic front, a bushing barrel, the factory SV magwell, "duty" length SV magazines, and SV "aluminum wedge" basepads will fit in the IDPA box with no modifications (and with a little room to spare). To make the slide lock back for IDPA don't get a detent in the slide stop, use 140mm magazine springs (even though the mags are shorter), use the standard followers (not +1 competition models), and sand the followers to get them higher in the magazine. ---------- Also if I was going to do it again I would get the gun built in .40 SW. This way you get both an ESP gun and a Limited 10/Limited gun with only a change in magazine length and load. A 40 is easier to get reliable and when loaded light is about the same as 9mm. The only downside is that there isn't any factory .40 near 125 PF if for some reason you lose your ammo and need to run to Walmart right before a match. The gun was built when 10mm was still legal in CDP. The plan was to have one gun for both CDP and ESP. So much for plans. I only use CMC 9rd 10mm mags and it runs great. I would seriously consider building a double stack STI or SVI with a bushing barrel to be IDPA legal. Much more forgiving on reloads. And they will fit in the box. Actually, I had an STI 2011 9mm built for Bianchi Cup by EGW, trigger by Rob Leatham, and a Kart Barrel. SWEET. Then I heard the BS about not allowing the recoilmaster to be used. I have an 5" STI 9mm bushing gun..with an EGW barrel and bushing, FO front, etc..pretty nice setup... really accurate.. but then my Glock is just as fun when it comes to IDPA.. However i also know at a top level a slight equipment edge is not something i want to give up to my competition. I plan to use the gun to win various state championships next year and will be in direct competition with scott warren, and any other ESP masters that show up ( i say scott because he is the most regular) I also intend on using the gun for CCW. My thought on single stack was that 10 total is an advantage over 11 total rounds ( i have RARELY , almost never) seen an 11 round stage. and i get to reload between targets most of the time. as for reloads, years of reloading a beretta 92, and a LDA without mag well really has helped my confidence/consistancy with reloads. dpeters8445 Posted September 1, 2004 Share Posted September 1, 2004 I have been shooting for the last year a Les Baer ultimate master in 38 super. The gun relly bounces nice with those minor loads. The problem was that I mainly shoot IDPA only in the Winter and I did not get enough trigger time with it so I recently had Brazo's build me a cross competitor 2011. I just got the gun a little over a month ago and have only shot it in USPSA limited. When I get some free time I plan on working up a minor load for IDPA ESP for the Winter. It's late and my d-cam doesn't like indoor light. Here is the gun and a duty mag setup for IDPA: Here is the gun with mag inserted in the IDPA box. There is room all the way around the gun. No need to force anything. Here is the entire setup with spare mags (2 of them are 140mm for fun). The holster is a Comp-Tac Locking Paddle and the double mag carrier is also Comp-Tac. The holster is fit to an STI Edge since I currently use the same same rig in Limited. It is really sweet to say the least! Again this setup in .40 SW would be the ticket for both IDPA ESP and USPSA Limited/Limited 10 with only a change in mags. Hindsight is always 20-20.
