    Thumb safeties.

I'm starting to have this issue with my CZ75 SP01 Shadow Custom. I've already contacted Scott Perman for one of this springs. One thing I noticed is that the safety has a bunch of "ambiguous freeplay" before it completely locks in the safe position. When I contact the safety, usually with the meat of my support side first thumb joint, I don't fully lock it up - I just shove it up enough to interfere with the guns operation. As soon as I move my thumb, the safety usually drops back down into the FIRE position. Looking at how the safety functions, there is a pie-shaped pad on the safety arm that rotates underneath the sear arm. (I hope I'm using the right terminology) If you re-shaped the pie-shaped pad, you could make it so the safety only engages when the safety lever is fully engaged & locked, by making the pie-shaped piece smaller. Don't change the "diameter / radius" of the pie, just close up the angle / number of degrees of the pie piece by removing material at the leading edge. Basically, I want the safety to still function, but only when it is fully in the SAFE position. (I have a sketch, but I can't manage to put up a picture. The REPLY window keeps locking up every time I try.)
  2. New-ish CZ shooter here, and let me just say THANK YOU for posting all this...
  3. Very interesting discussion. In my previous shooting experiences before serious competition, I was always told I should be working towards shooting with both eyes open. I tried and tried. No matter whether it was iron sights on an M4 or an Aimpoint Red Dot, I got the same results. Downrange when I shot with my right eye open only, I got good consistent hits. When I tried to keep both eyes open, I CONSISTENTLY get two distinct groups downrange - one right on top of my previous "good" group, and one to the left of it. The two groups apparently reflect my eyes' battle for dominance. FWIW, Every basic eye dominance test points to my bring clearly right eye dominant. Up until a few months ago, I wore corrective lenses, and just recently got LASIK. I've continued to shoot with my left eye closed for USPSA, but I really need to try tape over my non-dominant (left) eye some time. I hope it might restore some peripheral vision while also reducing stress in my face and eyes.
  4. I train with, and shoot NSSF rimfire, with an M&P 15-22. At $299 it's the best bargain in firearms, IMHO. I've added a Geiselle S3G trigger and Troy handguard just like my 3-gun AR15. It's WAY more accurate than I need it to be, and with over 10,000 rounds through it, it has ZERO failures with "fresh" ammo.* Yes, I wish it were the same weight as my primary ARs for training reasons, but for Rimfire reasons, the lightweight is nice. It's easy to disassemble, easy to clean (although I rarely do), and it's been a workhouse of my gun safe. It eats everything I throw at it, but it enjoys a steady diet of Federal Auto Match and CCI Standard. The CCI is certainly subsonic, and it functions with it perfectly. The gun is an amazing suppressor host. As people mentioned above it's super-quiet, especially with a can. Personally, I run an Alchin Gunworks comp on it, for that little bit of extra muzzle stability in a match, and it also solves the timer issue. Scott * I have to qualify this statement because I often challenge this gun's reliability by picking up all the failure-to-fire rejects off the floor after a match, puting them in a magazine, and shooting them through this gun at the end of matches. I'll usually load up 25 rounds into a mag, ALL of which have been hit once and rejected by another gun, and it often makes it through the entire magazine without a failure. I have had a few that it would not fire though.... But expecting 100% out of everyone else's unknown quality rejects is a bit much to ask....
  5. I guess that the IDPA waited to make the announcement until the check from the CZ sponsorship cleared.....
  6. I've been very impressed with all of Steve's books, and this one is no exception. Between helping to develop a mental management strategy (for both practice and competition), and for creating focused goals during practiced, this book has already helped me a lot. I'm looking forward to my work slowing down a bit so I have a block of time to dedicate to the application of more strategies in this book to my practice schedule!
  7. I manufacture some very nice AR500 plate racks. They're not quite as cheap as some of the ones here, but it's a heavy-duty plate rack designed for LOTS of heavy usage - comparable to the nicest Bianchi-spec racks. Our racks include features that many charge extra for, like a full width 3/8" AR500 guard plate, 3/8" AR500 targets, quick-pin removable targets, and a remote reset arm and paracord cable. I don't know where you're located, but we manufacture these just north of Charlotte, NC. You can see some pictures of them at: www.facebook.com/BestTargets PM me if you're interested.
  8. I'm using one on my long-distance 6.5 Creedmoor match rifle, and I love it. The glass and reticle are both outstanding. Customer Service has also been great.
  9. If you took that pesky cap off the front of the magazine tube, along with the spring and follower, I'll bet you could load 30, 40, or even 50 rounds in there!
  10. After 11 years of playing football, including college, I have a large collection of old football cleats that I'm slowly working through. I think a few pairs of these were retired after only a few weekends... I love the grip they give me, and I don't really notice the discomfort that much, but they certainly are not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination! That said, I'm starting to wonder if I have TOO much grip. I think the confidence I get from that much grip makes me coming into shooting positions charging like a bull. That worked well when I was lining up a 260# linebacker, but getting into a shooting box takes just a bit more finesse.... The grip sure helps me get OUT of shooting positions quickly though! I just need to work hard on being softer getting into position. Scott
  11. I ended up taking the CZC rear site and put it in a mill, widened and deepend the notch, chopped a tick off the top to fix the POA/POI relationship, and chopped off the top corners to be more like my Warren Tactical rears I'm used to. Now it's working like a charm! Scott
  12. I didn't want to go any skinnier in the front, but I wanted more light, so I just put my CZ Custom shop rear on the mill tonight and hogged it out a bit. It came out REALLY nice. .145 wide, .140 deep, knocked off the top corners, with the CZ Custom .125 front sight. It looks great!
  13. After not finding a sight package I liked on my CZ75 SP01 Shadow Custom, I ended up taking the rear site and putting it in the mill. Whacked a bit off the top edge (to improve my POI/POA relationship), widen the rear notch to .145 (from .125), deepened the rear notch to .140, and chopped off the top corners. Took about two hours to get the whole thing done, but I absolutely love it now. Can't wait to get it out and shoot it. It really surprised me that no one makes a rear sight upgrade/option for the CZ Custom, so I made my own. It's a nice sight, but it's just too tight a sight picture for most USPSA shooters I know... Scott
  14. At the recent Virginia / Maryland sectional (Bay #2, Cognus), at the end of a stage, I got a warning for moving while keeping my finger on the trigger. At the time, I was coming off a stage, I realized I was not being penalized, and the RO was being very polite, and I had no reason not to be exceptionally polite back to him, so I did not argue it with him. I went back, watched the video, and that brought up a rules question. What had happened was this.... After finishing an array of targets, I rotated my body to face the next target, only to be reminded that the target was behind a barrier (one that you could see through, which is why my eyes locked on it and I brought the gun to it, even though it could not be shot from where I was at). It was about two steps to the position where I could shoot it, so I essentially held a sight picture as I closed the distance. My finger was indeed on the trigger, but I had the gun in my line of sight, arms extended, two-hand grip the entire time. From the video it looks like I *MAY* have lost the sight picture for a moment then regained it, but I clearly had a sight picture on that target most of the time. (I have the video, 42MB, if someone can host it) From my interpretation of 8.5.1, I would think this movement with my finger on the trigger was legal..... 8.5.1 Except when the competitor is actually aiming of shooting at targets, all movement (see Appendix A3) must be accomplished with the fingers visibly outside the trigger guard and the safety should be engaged. The handgun must be pointed in a safe direction.
  15. My CR Speed mag pouches, which worked great for my Sig magazines, seem to be pretty loose on my CZ75 magazines. I have tried to tighten them up, but they don't seem to be willing to tighten up enough. Has anyone had to shim them somehow?
  16. Are there any options for a CZ75 SP01 Shadow Custom that have a wider rear notch? There is nowhere near enough light around the front site post for my liking....
  17. Guys and Gals- I've put together an Excel spreadsheet that will show you your sight picture based on all the critical dimensions involved (front sight and rear sight dimensions, sight radius, arm length, etc). It also calculates the size of the front sight as a percentage of the rear notch, taking into account the way your eye is seeing it, and all the angles and distances involved. It's a handy program for anyone who wants to compare a current site package to a proposed sight package, or match their current sight picture on another gun. Since I have a decent amount of work into this, I'll just ask that I control the distribution of it - I don't want money. Please PM with your E-Mail address if you'd like a copy of it, and if a friend wants a copy too, just ask them to PM me. I hope this helps some people! It was a massive help to me in coming up with a sight package for my P226 and X5 A/R. -Scott
  18. So is there any source for spacers outside of the range that's included with the gun. I just installed the .250 drop, and it was a massive improvement, but I hate that there is no .125 drop or .375 drop that I can try to see where I really fall.... Scott
  19. You already know exactly what your goals are for going to this match, which is perfect. Go to the match, have fun, and learn. Relax and don't let the pace you see in other shooters affect you or your performance at all. Enjoy your first match! -Scott
  20. I've been considering cutting a few metal adapters for this. Essentially, I've found I like the CR Speed double mag pouches better than the singles, because they are more stable on the belt and leave more Velcro connecting the top and bottom belts, so I've been pondering changing my singles to doubles, but I wanted to adjust the "span" between the two pouches by custom making the metal adapter piece rather than just ordering CR speed parts to do the conversion. While I'm at it though, I've been pondering drill holes for a tek-lok at the same time. If you're interested in a few, drop me a PM. Of course, finding Tek-Loks in stock anywhere right now is pretty tough!
  21. As has been said, if you're not going to seriously reload all your own stuff, stick with 6.5CM. It's nice to be able to get off the shelf ammo, but buy in big lots because the factory stuff has a nasty habit of being completely different from one lot to the next. 6mm is gaining momentum, but requires another level of commitment since you'll need to reload 100%. I'm in NC too, and have only been shooting Precision Rifle for about a year now, but did pretty well at the Mammoth Sniper Challenge, and am looking to do more events this year. The BangSteel Guardian matches up in Virgina I think are full for the year, but keep in touch with them about practice days and such. As for optics, I've managed to get this far with an SWFA fixed 10x. Don't get me wrong - I'm planning on purchasing something better very soon, but this $299 scope will get your foot in the door, and I've been competitive against glass 10x as expensive. I wanted to sink my money into the gun and into trigger time, and I'll upgrade the glass later. Just my $0.02 With enough LR shooters here in the NC area, let me know if you want to arrange a practice / testing day somewhere. Scott
  22. Whenever I'm trying to decide what to stipple, I start with grip tape. Use it that way for a few days, and you'll quickly find out where you like the grip, and where you don't. Trim it, re-do it, until you find just what you want. Then mask and stipple it permanently. Just my $0.02. Scott
  23. I just shot the Mammoth Sniper Challenge at Rockcastle, and it's a great facility for Precision Rifle work. Joe ran a fantastic competition, and I'm sure his class and open practice schedule is excellent as well. I'll definitely try to make the time to go. -Scott
