  1. I have searched for the Surefire Shot Timer, but I can't find it. Searching "SUREFIRE" gives me 5 results - none of which are right. I've searched "SHOT TIMER" and several other things, and I can't find it. Anyone help? Is there a chance that searching on an iPhone5 only shows apps that are compatible with this device, and maybe that specific shot timer is not?
  2. I have had an Andriod phone for years, I found the IPSC Shot Timer worked OK (not great) for me, even indoors (read: with echoes) and when shooting small caliber stuff. But now I've switched to an iPhone5. I'm looking for suggestions from people who have used the many shot timers that are out there for this phone, and especially those who have used them INDOORS where echoes can be an issue. Which shot timer's are best - and have the best combination of features and anti-falsing algorithms? All opinions are appreciated!
  3. I will always be an Alex Lifeson fan. There are tons of other guitar players I watch every I chance I get, and try to emulate (Petrucci, Satriani, etc) but Alex Lifeson was my first!
  4. Which brings up a question - is there significant danger to a round going off outside of a firearm? Can it build enough velocity to be dangerous without a barrel? Scary - yes. I'm NOT promoting trying this, or in any way taking away from the pucker factor of that moment. I'm just curious if anyone knows this answer - cause I'm sure not going to run an experiment! As an interesting note, I've had ROs actually yell at me for catching the round I eject. Apparently someone had a round almost get caught, end up back in the gun any somehow going off when the slide was closed - or some such story. Seems like no matter what you do, someone has a horror story about the way you do it is not safe...
  5. Scott, does yours have a terrible trigger pull? Mine does - love it except for the damn trigger pull. It's certainly not great, but I'd compare it to any other standard Mil-Spec trigger. With most of the kind of shooting I do with that gun, I don't really notice it that much. But don't get me wrong, I would love to upgrade the trigger in it.
  6. I have well over 5000 rounds through my S&W M&P-15 Sport, and I could not be happier with it. I bought it as an entry level training gun, and it's done that several times over. It's been used at several 500rd/day classes, including a week at Blackwater/USTC I think I've had only one malfunction (user error) with it the entire time I've had it. I paid about $600 for it, and have not regretted it one bit. Sure, it's not a 500 yard shooter, or a high-end competition gun, but it's great for training, SHTF, and other similar work. I would highly recommend it. Scott

    LASIK

Reading this thread is making me quiver with excitement. I've worn glasses all my life. I am not able to wear contacts, so I've been dealing with glasses. Seperate pairs for sunglasses, seperate ones for shooting, etc. It's a pain. Waking up in the morning and not being able to see until you fumble around on your nightstand to find your glasses is horrible. The fact that they're CLEAR and don't exactly stand out is just salt in the wound. And when something goes bump in the night, and it takes 3 seconds to have my Sig in my hand, but about 20 to find my glasses - well that's just scary. I even left a sport I was really enjoying (nationally competitive tournament paintball) because I could not get over fogging with every trick in the book. But now I've decided to move forward, and reading this thread is just pushing me toward it more. I'd love better vision. I'd love to not have to worry about glasses, or having to clean them. I'd love to have inexpensive and easily changable shooting glasses lenses. Ok, sorry for the soapbox. If anyone has specific guidance, recommendations, or suggestions on how to make this process as successful as possible, please I'm open to hear them. To say this makes me nervous is an understatement.
  8. To follow up on my question, I found this webpage where Safariland explains the ELS and QLS system, or at least tries to... http://www.safariland.com/dutygear/duty/qas.aspx But I still don't understand the differences between the two....
  9. I have several Safariland holsters now. Can the ELS system go "inbetween" my current holsters and mounts, to make them all interchangeable? I know there is a system like this available, but I'm not sure if the ELS system is that system. All my holsters are the newer 3-bolt layout....
  10. An Enos Forum discount?!? Damn, just ordered a bunch of stuff from them.... Oh well, I'll use that discount the next time I order!
  11. Thanks for all the replies! Please keep them coming! Clint-M, thanks for the differences between the TRX and Alpha. Which is the better choice then? What are the pros and cons associated with those two methods? Is one more easy to install / stable / expensive?
  12. I have an M&P-15 I'm starting to compete with a little. This is not going to be a long-term competition gun, but it's getting me started. It's primarily been a tactical gun up until now. Even before I started to compete with it, I've wanted a longer fore grip, and now I want it even more. For background, the gun is currently set-up with a Magpul carbine length polymer front grip and a permanany iron front site post. I'll be cutting off the front site post, using it only as a gas block, and using a Magpul BUS for now. This gun is primarily used with optics. Yes, I know they have units that do not require me to modify the front site post, but I think they're ugly as sin. So first option I considered was a 12" Mid-West Industries Gen II. Thanks to a friend I was able to try out a rifle with that on it, and overall, I liked it a lot, but I found the diameter to be just a tick too small for my hand, and the 12" grip was a tick too short. Also, I found the smooth surface felt a little slick in my hands. So with that feedback, I was looking at the Troy TRX 13". I thought the slightly larger grip might help, the texture might help, and the extra 1" might help. And does anyone know how the TRX is different from the VTAC Alpha unit? Are there any other units I should consider? Thanks!
  13. If you have the GGI Intermediates available huskerlrrp, I'll take one for my future X5 purchase...
  14. Very interesting thread for me... I'm a musician (guitar player) who plays everything from Blues to Progressive Metal. Musically, I listed to a lot of Rush, Dream Theater, but you'll catch me listening to everything from classical to Heavy Metal. For Progressive / Symphonic metal, btw, I'd recommend listening to Dream Theater and Lacuna Coil respectively. I also fight Mixed Martial Arts. When I'm sparring, I need to get my blood flowing. Welcome to the Jungle, by GNR, and several other heavy songs get that juice going. KoRN, Rammstein, and numerous other angry bands do that for me. "Angry" music to me is very different than heavy music. Progressive metal is not angry enough for me for this purpose. Some Rap music often does this for me too. But for me at least, I can't be that juiced up to shoot - and just about any heavy or angry music would do that. I think it would make me more stressed than I already am. I feel like I need the opposite experience. As someone who is relatively new to competitive shooting, *I may be wrong here*, but I still feel my heart race and my sweat reflex kick in when I come up to the line. That reaction forces me to work to calm myself down and focus. I feel like any heavy / angry music would just make this worse. I don't listen to music at the range, but maybe I should. I'll experiment with it.
  15. Call Bruce or Roy at GGI. I've been trying to get them to make a run for a few months now. If they get enough phone calls, maybe they'll decide to make another run of them.
  16. If you can find one, Bruce Gray and GGI made an intermediate mag release that is the perfect point inbetween the undersized stock piece, and the oversized competition piece. It took me a while to find one, but I was finally able to find one for my P226 TacOps, and I love it. If you can convince Bruce to make a run of them again, you'll be very happy you did. (Oh, and I need another one!) But right now, they are out of stock and not available anywhere NIB.
  17. Wish I could make it! I'll be on the road (Talladega) that weekend. Hopefully there will be some good events in NC after the season ends around Thanksgiving.
  18. I have 1/1000th the shooting experience as Brian does, but I'm already finding out what he's saying as true. I learned the OP's lesson (going slow is fast) very early on. Then I got better and thought I could speed up. Then I learned the lesson again. Then I got sucked into speeding up again. Then I learned the lesson again..... Rinse and repeat. I have made up a short two sentence reminder to myself. It's almost a mantra, a reminder. I repeat it to myself (sometimes out loud if I can do it without people starting at me) before EVERY string I shoot. It's a reminder to me to breath, control the trigger, see the front sites, and SLOW DOWN. As soon as I neglect this part of my ritual, my mind wanders, my stress rises, and times go through the roof. I'm trying to accomplish the impossible - never getting sucked into out-racing myself. I know it's going to happen several hundred more times in my shooting career, but I'll try to avoid it if I can. This is just one step to ground myself.

Our local range has one in it's rental rack, and pulled out out as a "mystery gun" during a recent team shooting competition. I thought it was a brilliant gun, and I had zero feed issues, even when using "range" ammo (Federal Target White box). I really need to buy one, or at least another very nice CZ75....
  20. Thanks for the feedback Sin-Ster. Actually, I tried Glocks and was never able to get comfortable with them because of that grip angle. Of course, that was before I knew the "right" way to grip a gun, so maybe I should take a seriously look at them again. My first thought reading your post was "Sure, I know more range time would be better for me but... [insert excuse about lack of time / money here]. My competition is only a few weeks away!" Then I turned off my ego and read it again. You're absolutely right, I need to be extra aggressive about dry fire practice this next few weeks. Of course I'm going to practice as much as I can live fire, but I need to do lots of dry-fire. I'll continue to make small modifications to the grip as I need to, but more dry-fire time, and as much live-fire time as I can manage, is the real solution. Thanks.
  21. When you talk about the SRB holster, are you talking about this one?I'm very interested to hear opinions on this. I've been using a Blackhawk SERPA, but I'd like to get a "real" holster without retention buttons. Are both the Black Ice DOH and the Speed Rig D/OS illegal for production? In case it matters, I'm using (for now) a P226 TacOps in 9mm. I like the little strip right about the checkered front strap too. On my Sigs, I've always had a full piece of tape on the entire frontstrap area, and used the grips to hold down the edges of the tape so it doesn't peel up. it works great.
  22. At the suggestion of several people with more experience than I will ever have, I bought a 10x MRAD adjustment SWFA SS Scope for $299 for my Remington 700 5R / AICS Build. I've been very happy with it, but I have hardly put it through it's paces yet. My only comment is something another shooter pointed out to me when laying behind my rifle. He mentioned that the SWFA had a very unforgiving eye relief - that there was a very narrow window of eye relief that worked. He said his Leupold had a range of several inches where you could lay behind the gun, but the SWFA you had to the spot on. Anyone heard this before? I honestly don't have the experience to have an opinion on this, but I definitely do work pretty hard to get comfortable behind it. But unless someone wants to loan me a Schmidt & Bender to compare it to, it's the only data point I really have!
  23. Interesting timing on this question. I've been shooting a S&W 22A in Ruger Rimfire, and recently borrowed a Model 41 to shoot as well. The two grips could not be more different. Since I'm a little concerned with the reliability of the Model 41 (that's a different post), I've been having a tough time deciding which to shoot, and i've been doing LOTS of A/B/A/B tests, going back and forth, both live and dry firing. The two grips could not be more different. The Model 41 grip is, as far as I know, the stock grip. Similar to this one: MODEL 41 Grip My 22A has the laminated target grips, like this one: 22A Target Grips The grips could not be more different. The "Pull length" from the back of the grip at the trigger centerline height to the front face of the trigger is nearly 1/2" different (longer in the 22A). The 22A grip is much thicker, with less grip frame angle, much less texture to the grip. Also, the 22A seems to "interfere" with your trigger finger a lot more - the 41 "falls away" under your trigger finger, giving you room to work, and that's made easier by the extra bend in your finger from the short pull length. The 41 forces you to stretch your finger out more, bend the finger more closer to the tip, resulting in a poorer and more angled pull to the rear, while also touching the grip in a few places. Because I could not get comfortable with the 22A grip, I started grinding on it. Being wood laminate, I use grinding discs, scotch-lock discs, sanding drums, and scotch-brite drums, and finishing off with 400 grit sandpaper. (Did I mention I work on race cars all day? I have plenty of air tools!) I was pleased that I could slightly reform an area, sand it out, re-oil it, and make the modification nearly disappear, so I kept going. I was limited in some areas by the thickness of the 22A grips, but I got quiter carried away in some areas, nearly poking all the way through. Even with all the work to make it more like the Model 41 grip, I notice a big NPOA shift between the two guns. The bigger 22A grips seem to want to point differently in my hand, and I find I lock my right arm completely, and slightly unlock my left arm, forming a less symmetric stance with the 22A, and pointing naturally a little more to my left if my shoulders were square to the target. With the M41, my body seems to go straight to the symmetric both-arms-locked-out stance. I'm open to hear other's experiences on this. I've never spent so much time analyzing grips as I have recently, because it's a lot easier to REMOVE material than it is to add it back!
  24. Thanks Staudacher. I'm sorry to keep asking for this, but I like your part *SO* much I'd like to see it available for non X5s. It looks like you'd need to weld on the frame, and then machine it afterwards. Probably not impossible, but not ideal certainly. I hope Sig decides to put these rails on everything. What do you think Sig has two different designs in this area? Why not consolidate to a single design? Do you know if non-X5 stainless guns (like the USPSA Dual-Tone, or the P226 Stainless / P226ST) have this rail, or are they like the alloy guns? This might be one more reason to push me to get an ST or a USPSA P226. -Scott
