  1. Also, Strelok now includes a muzzle velocity "trueing" feature that was previously only available (AFAIK) in the ATrag software that was not available for any of the modern platforms.
  2. I'm looking for one too. I'd really like to get into 3-gun, but I need a shotgun first! I'd prefer the 22", but I'd probably take a 24" if it was available.
  3. Even now many versions of the M&P 15-22 come with the barrel unthreaded. Be VERY careful when removing the barrel or when installing or removing any threaded muzzle device. It does not really come out in the normal way, and putting any torque on the barrel relative to the upper during the process can spin the barrel in the upper receiver, rounding off the keys that orient the barrel....
  4. I've found both Strelok and Bulletflight Level 2 to be good software on my iPhone5. They both give very similar results, and have some slight strengths and weaknesses between them (which is why I still use both sometimes). I've found some interesting things about my muzzle velocity by correlating my actual DOPE tables back to the ballistic solver.....
  5. Under as controlled conditions as I could muster, I shot a 10 shot group at 300 yards of each of four different types of ammo, and the results were very interesting. The zero was set for the 69gr ammo, and I did NOT adjust once I started shooting. All the shots were taken with a 15 minute period or so, on 4 different targets, to minimize changes in weather. The first group was the 69gr Black Hills Reman 69gr. SMK HPBT. The group size was under 2", and it was centered on the target (no surprise, I had just zeroed the gun under these conditions). The second group was 68gr Black Hills Reman 68gr, which I believe to be a Hornaday bullet? This group moved off center about 1.5" right, and about 1.5" down, and the group size was about 3" from end to end. The third group was 75gr Black Hills Reman 75gr, which I also believe to be a Hornaday bulley? This group moved off center about 4" down, and maybe 1/2" right. The group size was about 3" from end to end. The forth group was 60gr V-Max manufactured by Atlanta Arms & Ammo. Group size was about 2.5", moved straight up about 1". Based on these results, I shot the 69gr B/H Reman SMK BTHP and was VERY happy with their performance. Beyond 800 yards my groups definitely opened up as the bullet went transonic, and at 1000 yards I struggled to keep up with the .308 shooters, but I still had a blast. Inside 600 yards I think I had the most accurate gun there, and i was very happy with that. Tomorrow I go back to Butner National Guard Armory to get some more practice from 500 to 1000 yards with this gun. Wish me luck! -Scott
  6. Sounds like they decided they could now sell it for more money. Or that one of the employees wanted to buy it....
  7. After downloading Action Shot, I was disappointed to find that it was really only meant to combine a series of shots into one shot (like a skateboarder jumping off a ramp - you see the ramp, and the skate boarder just before he jumps, as he's jumping, and as he's landing all the in the same frame). It's a neat trick, but not really goot for shooting (but maybe for movement in a USPSA course?) So after searching a bit, I found this page, which talks about iPhone apps for rapid picture taking, as well as frame grabbing out of videos. I have not used all these apps, but I'm going to download a few. If you download some, leave us your impressions of them here. http://giveawaytuesdays.wonderhowto.com/inspiration/10-iphone-and-android-apps-for-capturing-action-shots-0129843/
  8. The Camera on my previous phone (a Samsung Galaxy S Android) was nowhere near as good as the iPhone's camera. I just wish the iPhone had a few more options like the Android camera did, but it's a much better, high-resolution camera. I'm downloading Action Shot, as mentioned above, as I type this.
  9. I may be speaking out my a** here, because I have lots more experience playing with the software than actually shooting at long distances, but I've generally been impressed with both the v2 BulletFlight, and with Strelok.
  10. I shot *MY* first official IDPA match this past weekend. I had shot a few "IDPA-Lite" type matches, along with plenty of other stuff, but this was my first IDPA match, and I knew I was going to stumble on the rules - and I did. I stopped once and picked up the magazine I dropped on the ground with a live round in it, etc. (Apparently it's safer in a gunfight to pick up a magazine with a single round in it, and put it in your pocket, than it is to just keep shooting with the full magazine that's now in your gun! I think you might have to yell "Time-Out!" to the people shooting at you first!) But I need someone to explain this to me.... On one stage, the shooter started without cover facing several targets, which had to be shot in tactical sequence and tactical priority. No problem. Draw and start shooting. I tripled a few of them and shot to slide lock - completing all the targets in that area. Now, I'm standing WITHOUT COVER. I start to move to cover (where additional targets need to be engaged) while re-loading and get a procedural. RSO says I needed to complete my reload before moving to cover. WHAT?!?! Ok, to be fair, he did a good job of explaining this before the match - it's not his fault - but mine. I brain-farted. I knew I was supposed to do this, but I didn't. My tactical training taught me to get behind something NOW while I reload. I don't blame the RSO..... But I still don't understand why this is. In what universe would you require someone to stand in full view of people shooting at you while you re-load? As he explained to me "The reload needs to be complete, including the slide closed on a loaded chamber, before initiating movement to cover". I can understand this (almost) if you're in one position of cover, and moving to another, but in this case we were not. I was in open ground, shooting stationary, as per the stage description, and moving toward cover. Can anyone provide a little insight here?
  11. It was a classic. For those of you who missed it, please make the time to go see it. 90's classic!
  12. A lot of those auctions are actually for brass collection CONTRACTS. You bid on the right to purchase future brass collection a certain number of times per year at a fixed price they set....
  13. Laptop, IE9, Same thing. "No New Content"
  14. The 3M stuff definitely has a better quality adhesive. I found the skateboard shops and places like that have off-brand stuff (equivalent to what you'd buy at Harbor Freight). Keep in mind that this stuff will kill whatever knife you use to cut it. Cut it from the back side, with a disposable blade Xacto knife or box cutter. Clean the surface well, and use a heat gun on it after you've put it on. Works like magic!
  15. Graham- Would that be this page here? http://www.snipercentral.com/hsm They do have a 69gr SMK load that might work. A bit more expensive than the Black Hills, and not nearly enough in stock. -Scott
  16. Thanks very much for your input! I had been leaning toward the heavier round, but I thought the BC had a big influence on the bullets ability to resist wind too, and was wondering if the 68gr might actually be a bit flatter and more wind resistant if it did indeed have a higher BC.
  17. Seems like all the retailers are in a hurry to get rid of their PMag stock. With the Gen 3 PMags coming out this week, everyone is blowing out the Gen 3 stuff. Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with the Gen 2 stuff, but just be aware that the Gen 3 PMags do claim to have some nice upgrades...
  18. I'm trying to decide on a .223 ammunition for a mid-range bolt-action rifle. The barrel is 1:9 twist based off a Remington 700 5R. The rifle has a Accuracy International stock, Timney trigger, and a bunch of other nice touches on it, and will be the semi-distance rifle my wife and I will shoot together (hence the smaller caliber on this rifle). I'll leave longer distances to a future .338 Lapua build. I know that the 1:9 twist rate won't support a 70gr or more round, especially not the 77gr SMK which would probably be my first choice. So I'm setting my ceiling at 69gr. The previous owner shot Fiochhi 69gr, and that is all I've shot through the gun so far. It's grouped reasonably well, but with my limited experience distance shooting, I don't know how much to blame on the shooter instead of the ammo, so it's hard for me to judge. The only reason I'm in a "rush" to decide, is that I'm taking a nearly week-long distance shooting class, and I DO NOT want to switch ammos during the course, so I need to decide on one type, order 1000 rounds of it, and stick with it. I'm going to do some test shooting next week, but I wanted to make sure that I was taking a representative set of ammo types to test. I'm trying to balance cost, so I'm staying away from the most expensive ammos. Due to the volume this rifle will be shooting, I'm trying to stick around $0.60-$0.65 per shot. So far I have a box of: Fiochhi .223 69gr SMK BTHP Black Hills Reman .223 69gr SMK BTHP Black Hills Reman .223 68gr Black Hills Reman .223 60gr V/Max I tried, but was unsuccessful at ordering a box of Atlanta Arms & Ammo .223 60gr V/Max, which I also wanted to try. (They are out of stock). I would normally think the 69gr SMK would probably be the best, if the rifle can stabilize it well, but according to This Website the 68gr has a BC of 0.355, while the 69gr has a BC of around 0.301. That really surprised me. It sure would be nice to have a higher BC bullet if it's possible. The 60gr seems to have an even lower BC, but I've heard some good things about it. If anyone has any first hand experience to share, or recommendations on other types to test, I'm all ears. And if anyone wants to comment on the "right" way to test these ammos in my gun, I'd love to hear that too. Right now I'm not concerned about punching the X-ring, I just want to know which ammo works well and groups the best in my gun before I start making range cards, etc. Thank you in advance for any and all opinions!
  19. One more note about the Intermediate Mag Releases. I purchased a new Blade Tech holster, and found out that the holster and the mag release did not play nice together... During practice, I kept dropping the magazine out of gun during my draw with the new holster. I had no idea why. Maybe I was not inserting the mag fully? Maybe I was hitting the new longer release? After a few experiements, I found out that the mag release was being depressed by the holster when it was inserted. The magazine would slip out just enough to be past the mag release during the draw, and then when the gun was upright, the magazine fell the rest of the way out. I'm sure a little dremel time with the holster right in that one area should resolve the problem. Just wanted to pass on this experience.
  20. Sending the gun for a little quality time with Bruce Gray will fix this issue. I'll happily take that heavy vague-trigger-having paper weight off your hands!
  21. After a reasonable amount of experience with Sigs, Various rimfire pistols, and some other handguns, I'm considering satisfying my long-time desire to own a Olympic Rapid-Fire pistol. I want this primarily for casual shooting and bullseye competition, but I might use it for a little steel plate shooting just for fun. A few criteria for me included a decent magazine capacity (I want more than 5 so I can shoot some steel plate shoots which might require 6 to 8 shots, and Ruger Rimfire allows 10) and I want the option to have a grip that can be shot strong-hand, weak-hand, and both hands (our local bulls-eye league shoots the NRA qualifier which includes strong and weak, and steel plate would use both). These criteria, and a visual preference have led me to the Benelli MP-95e Atlanta. The Atlanta comes with an ambi-grip (I can add a custom grip later), 9-round magazines (I can load 10 manually), and is a great purposeful looking pistol. There is one for sale locally I'm looking at later today for $750, which I think it a good price, but I have not seen pictures yet, so I'm holding judgement until I see the condition. The seller told me it had very few rounds down the pipe, and is in excellent condition. I can't wait to see it. So I'm looking for other opinions, experiences, and information. If there are forums where these are discussed, I'd appreciate leads. My google-fu is a little weak, and I've found very little useful discussions about this pistol. Are there things I should look for or be aware of before buying it? Is there a support community around pistols like these? Scott
  22. I would buy a case of it. Let me know when it goes to market! I would buy everything he could make. Not just so I could use it, but I'll buy enough that no one else get's any!!!! <Insert evil laugh here!>
  23. I was wondering if anyone had any real clever solutions to lighting your gun safe? I have a new safe being delivered and would like to light it. Hopefully some ideas about battery powered solutions, but I'm not afraid of using a drill either.... I found this solution using Wireless Pucklights..... ......but I was really hoping someone might have a shopping list and description of a solution that uses LED strip lights... Scott
  24. Very nice! Did you do the work yourself? If not, mind sharing who did it, how much it cost, and how much weight it shaved off? Also, who makes that extended cylinder release?
