  1. I'm with Drewbeck. Shoot the dog out of it and then shoot it some more. Get a case full of what ever bullet you're loading through it , THEN you'll know what YOU want to do with it. you'll also know your gun by then so when you start changing springs and shooting drills on a timer you'll be able to feel and know by the timer which spring is for you etc. for me its 13lbs, 12 feels better but the timer says 13 is better. Every STI 40 I've owned will take 1.200 COL, I load to 1.185 based on how smooth the gun runs with that length. Again you have to know by shooting what it should feel like. normally and what load and length feel better. Get a load and stick with it for a long time as long as it makes major. you'll be a lot farther ahead doing that than jumping all around based on what everyone else is doing. Then 5 to 6000 rounds down the barrel you'll have all the experience you need to make changes and know if they do anything for YOU! Though I would go to a standard guide rod and spring Good fortune with it jcc7x7
  2. Been using 200 gr RN Bayou's with great success. Accuracy is outstanding the BBI 200 gr bullet should be accurate as well since in theory anyway it has more bearing surface on the lands and groves so shouldn't have any problems being accurate. I want to try some of his bullets and I'm getting ready to order a mixed case of 9's, 40's and 45's. I like messing with stuff but often don't change things unless there is a significant upside. the other advantage is if I can't get my favorite bullet I've already got load data to go with for the others I've found Bayou, SnS, MG and HAP's all excellent bullets in all the calibers I've used them in FTIW
  3. In my 40 2011 and Para 200 gr bullets hit 3 's higher than 180's both loaded to 172-173 PF Same Same
  4. Shot a 100 more while shooting some MG's at intervals. Looks good overall Some minor smoke with coated (I,e, more than with mg's) Practice match went well, and gun feels a little smoother / Flatter with the coated No visible debris in comp
  5. +1 on the dawson mag release slam some mags in during practice. you'll always do things a little more aggressively at a match do to the excitement
  6. AFTEC is the answer I'm into year 40 of 1911's and only wish they would have made them sooner I carry spare springs for the aftec but have not used one in 5 years. Nor have I had an extractor issue in the 5 years I've used them
  7. WSField !!! 4.4 to 4.6 with 124 HAp's or MG's Also have used lots of different lead bullets at 124-125grs with 4.3 grs All make minor PF and are very accurate
  8. There is another post out from a guy who just did some testing with WST and 200 coated bullets. So I found this one and posted it so the info was close together and we could cross reference. I just re chrono'd out of the same box from the winter and got 174 and 174 I also chron'd 4.1 grs and got about 172-173 so I'm bumping down a tenth for while and going to test that when ever its hot out and see what happens
  9. Been shooting 4.2 gr for a while and just backed it down to 4.1 grs this summer. Started chono tests in the winter at 16 degrees. last chrono was at 89 degrees lost 2 -3 PF points with the hotter weather. But a 89 degrees I'm getting 171-172 with 4.1. I live in the north east so probably won't ever get a 100 degree match. I find it the most comfortable load to shoot out of my SS and Limited gun. I did a post similar to this back in the winter, you may want to see if you can find it. thanks for your info it collaborates with mine
  10. 3.9 clays, 230 Bayou, WLP, COL 1.255 Chrono'd 177 PF at area 7 2013, and 178 PF at SS Nat'l 2014 Might be your scale or mine. Like was said before go 1/10 at a time and get the velocity you need while checking safety Also try and borrow another chrono to verify yours
  11. .001 to .002 is what I use for Bayou's and SnS (same coating) coated bullets in 9, 40 and 45. Make sure they drop "plunk" into your camber
  12. bullets are Bayou's this time. I've shot some SnS 125 grs also and they didn't seem to be a problem but I always shot some MG's at the end of the practice session. I don't know if that helps or not keeping the comp clean. Didn't do it this time.
  13. Shoot some this weekend with auto comp 7.2 grs, 124gr Bayou , loaded to 1.270 which is about as short as I can load those bullets. All ran fine. Made major 167PF. Going to up it to 7.3grs. At this point I'm not trying to see how flat I can get them to shoot but just how they will go overall. Comp showed no signs of any lead or coating. Load was plenty accurate and SD was 13 so fairly consistent. Looking forward to Wed. I'm going to run a 100 more though the gun and shoot a 70 + or - practice match. the match is indoors so that ought to let me see how much if any smoke is being generated. Thanks for the replies keep'm coming P.S. Doug I was one of the guys in the late eighties shooting lead out of a 1911 38 super, 160 gr RN with AA7. back in the old PF days. But it was a single port comp that you could dig the lead out if you had to.
  14. Sometimes the stuff just splits. i'm one of those guys been loading for 40 years and think Federal is the nicest brass going other than Starline
  15. 17 lbs 9 lbs recoil spring in 9mm I run long firing pins in all guns used for competition
  16. Dan Bedell seems to be the guy who is building most of the best guns. HE builds MAX's guns and he shoots 30.000 rounds a month so I guess they shoot good and hold up.
  17. Great bullets and great service. I miss calling him but the website makes it nice for ordering early in the a.m. Maybe I call just to say howdy!
  18. And bullseye can be a dirty powder at times Some of my BE loads are dirty and some clean, I switched to WST = much cleaner I know you can't find any now, I kept my bullseye as back up etc.
  19. What are people finding using HI Tek (Bayou's, SnS & BB) Coated bullets in their open major guns. Not looking for a bullet company sales pitch. Guys at Bayou and SnS say they should work and have been working but both those guys are the real deal and aren't pitching etc. Want some of y'all who are actually using them to tell me what you're seeing. They run fine out of my gun and are very accurate but I always shoot some MG loads at the end of the session. Really want to hear form folks who are shooting them day in and day out Thanks in advance for real experience
  20. Bayou's, SnS same same, mostly Bayou's cause that's what I started with when I went to coated. Blue's and Ibjheads good but not as accurate as the above. Blue residue in box, dies and gun from BB Ibjheads no problems but guns seem to like the Bayou's best and SnS a real close 2nd
  21. Colt sear spring with one wrap of masking tae at the bottom of it seemed to work for one of mine.
  22. ICORE with my 625 cause the other "I"'s rules are even worse than the 8 shot minor rule LOL. Watch what this starts!!!!!!!!!
  23. yes saw a couple guys use them at nationals
