  1. I thought religion is seeking in hope of finding that thing which you worship. Or, the worship of a power greater than yourself which you spend your life seeking, trying to explain, yet can't explain. Or the dedication to a belief not seen, only "known". If "your true self" is what you worship, that defines zen as religion. (by your definition, that is...) I was just making a passing observation, actually. And, I have learned (during the few karate classes I attended) that zen and che definately are religions. FWIW
  2. I have been following this thread with some interest for several reasons. The 1st is the presence of this thread in a forum which "frowns apon" religious discussion... The second is the O.P. Why do we shoot - fill in your discipline here -? I shoot steel cause I like to knock down steel. Practical, as I understand it, was developed for training in gunfighting, yet now a little more P.C. as a "game". Like we train in the martial arts and compete in tournements, kickboxing, etc., to "use" our skills safely. What about the "Zen" part? I see it as simply this: We are trained our whole lives to "be aware", to see, to anticipate. We condition ourselves to draw at the beginning of the beep, and react in certain, trained-in tecniques. We spend our time ingraining these responses into our being. Live practice, dry fire, visualization, etc. Then we get to the match (or into the ring, or on the playing field, etc) and we tell our mind, "Don't think! Just do!", or, "be the bullet" or whatever, and then as our minds slow us down we say, "forget to remember" and "slow is fast" and so on... The speed comes, in my limited experience, with my limited capabilities, from the having fun. I don't care if I outshoot anybody. I only look to walk away thinking, "that is the very best I could have shot today!" In that i find my reason, because all the trophies are collecting dust in the basement and all the storys are certain to draw "that look" from the listeners. The other reason I follow is because I just love the way we seem to feel the need to "protect our nests" and find faults with one another's opinions, questions, or ideas. No, I probably don't have your experience! Or talent or training or anything. My bad... Maybe we will someday reach that Zen-like state where we just accept one another...
  3. Just want to know how I could get my favorite revo (model 66) to shoot cheap 9mm ammo. Hard to get much cheaper than 38 SC or cut down (.900 or so) 38 special brass. .355 bullets in a .357 barrel does not offer good accuracy. (as mentioned) I too have tried it. For the cost of a new cylinder, you could be up and reloading... That's where the real experimentation will yeild results anyway. IMHO.
  4. Hey! Was the .45 barrel supposed to come with my 22/45, or do I have to order it? ACP or long colt?Just wait till my wife hears about the good deal I got with her credit card this time!!! Oh, and the guy at my local store told me the other day that, "You don't need case lube. Nobody buys it so I don't order it"... HUH?
  5. Couple thoughts... Are there patent infringment suits filed against these companies? Or, are they building on a patent which has been released? (Such as H***y Rifles, U****i, etc) Also, these are the echos of voices from the past! 30 yrs and more ago, T***os were cheap imported junk! They were from offshore and trading on Aimpoint's success. Tsk, Tsk! T****s was garbage! Pure patent rip-offs and an inferior design! There are many products over the years that people looked down their noses at... Except the people that had them and they worked... More? Yeah, those R**k I*****s and A******* and P*** and G** and the like are all junk! Ask a shooter who uses them... I even heard that a major 3 initial race gun manufacturer uses those slides in some applications... Just my thoughts. Let the flames begin...
  6. I realize that all this comp talk is mostly subjective, but in my experiments with a GSG 1911 I video recorded shooting the gun stock and then with the comp and there is a very noticable differance with the comp. I also did plate rack runs (several, for average of time, splits, and accuracy) with and without and the "comped" times average faster and more accurate. Same effect with the GSG my shooting buddy's wife shoots - with and without the comp. Just my .02...
  7. Me too. I shoot several 1911s with my load (steel mostly) and usually leave the Sig to hold down the shelf...
  8. What velocity are you pushing them? I'm not familiar with that load, but, in my Sig 226, my load has to be pretty stout to run that gun. My usual plate loads of a 135gr plated or moly at around 900 fps won't run it. Stovepipes, etc, and sometimes it's a single shot! The plated should be more of a lead bullet recipe. Maybe you're driving them too hard in that gun? Individual guns require individual load recipes sometimes. Might be worth your while to work up a load for that gun?
  9. I put them in at the charging station on my Lee Pro 1000. Don't know if you can do that with other brands, but I expect so. If the primer is good, etc. They get charged, flared, etc and I'm good to go. If I get a case or more with a fatal defect (wrinkled crimp, split I missed @ inspection, messed up case mouth) I throw them into my burning paper bag. They make neat "mini fireworks" when I burn... Bang, snap, crack. Such fun!
  10. Oh yeah? Well, I, ahhh, er, ahhh , you , well, - I know you are but what am I ( or something...)
  11. What PF are you trying for? Even at that shorter COL your pressures won't be dangerously high. Your velocity with the 147s is only around 850-875. I tend to run all my COLs @ 1.100 to 1.125 now. I have tested them out as far as 1.170 and velocities are very similar, so I stay with the heavier bullets shorter.
  12. I thought the 9mm headspaced on the case mouth? Mine don't have a shoulder... Maybe that's where my problems begin... (LOL!) I shoot the 147 and 135 Bayous. My tests show the 147s to "push" the softest, but I have to run the COL at 1.100 or I have battery problems. No exp with those powders, but, that bullet or the 135 gr are easy to make PF with. I shoot the same loads out of a 6", a 5", a 4" and a 3.5 in. All function100%.
  13. It might not be the exact same thing, but, I run a weekly shoot here at my house. Mostly steel. I use texas stars, sometimes double stars, and Polish Plate Racks quite often. Once a month, I do a "carry gun nite" which is as the name implies. That night is realistic scenarios I usually get from the news, magazines, etc.. I also always do a man-on-man every week. My guests are everywhere form newish shooters to well experienced folks. (IPSC, steel, etc matchs) I always ask if the courses are hard enough, too hard, etc. They always say they like the challenge, and will shoot anything i can come up with. Never any complaints! I even used a swinging Texas star for a couple weeks. They loved it! I think if the stages are fun, and challenging, yet, the "compeditive" thing is reigned in, people can really have a great time. Incidentally, my Monday Nite thing is free. No cost, no prizes, no classification on guns (ie: run what you brung). People want to have fun. We try to leave the "hero" stuff at the real matches. IMHO.
  14. The one in my Fusion 6" is very accurate, but has a rather tight chamber. It causes problems if I don't chamber check everything. it will go "almost" into battery (within about 1/4") and is usually really stuck and hard to open (and forget pushing it into battery!). Bought a checker and lived happily ever-after...
  15. I removed the mag safety and put 1/2" rubber basepads on my mags. They seat fine, except for the "gotta be dead-nuts lined up or they jam" thing so common with those skinny, non tapered mag types.
  16. Yep, size DOES matter! +1 on the "go for it!"
  17. I love my 6" 9mm 1911! I have 3 1/2, 4, and 5" guns besides and the 6" acts more like a compensated gun. Nice balance, etc. All good! Mine has a C-MORE and I use it for steel. Awesome platform!! Besides, you will be 1 gun closer to having 1 in every length... Now, for that 7" I've been thinking about...
  18. I think, personally, that things like this prove that people are not "afraid" of Texas stars and many shooters if not most shooters handle them just fine with a little practice. We shoot them here and people tend to get used to them quickly, and then when they show up at a steel match, our shooters handle them quickly and accurately. Same with the Polish Plate Rack and the movers. So, MDs need "tricks" to make them big and bad and scarey!! Just shoot them and have fun!! IMHO...
  19. Ha Ha! I thought I was the only one crazy enough to cut down a crimp die and a powder /flare die! Guess that's why it's called a "die grinder"... I put the locking rings on the bottom also. I still use the roll crimp die on 38/357 stuff. Works fine. Learning curve!
  20. I use a .357 sizing die, a shortened .357 flare/powder die (in a Lee Pro 1000) and a 9mm taper crimp die. The roll crimp doesn't seem to play well with plated bullets, plus, some moly coated bullets aren't cannalured. My brass is .920 BTW.
  21. I thought the video was stupid too. But, Alaskapopo has a good point. It's their butts on the line. Also, if you have ever tracked from one shoot target to another, with a "no-shoot" (read:hostage) in between, you have just swept a hostage. What comes up at out weeekly shoots on "carry gun night" is often how to track a BG moving behind hostages without sweeping the hostages. Can't be done in real-life. If you have ever shot a BG behind (and maybe partially covered by) a hostage, you have just swept a hostage. I wouldn't train with those guys and I'm not sure what they think they are training for, but, it's their butts... IMHO
  22. I shoot the 135 Bayous @ 3.7gr Win 231, for around 950 fps. That's out of a 6" bbl. I shot a lot @ 4.0gr and was getting around 125PF out of my 5" gun. YMMV. I tend to run my COL at 1.100 to 1.125. Hope this helps...
  23. I doubt it. I use 10 round Tripps in all of my 1911 9mms including my Rock Island CS and they perform flawlessly! wonder how that mag went in so far as to hit the ejector??? Now THAT'S "driving it home"! 2 grand huh? Money well spent?? NOT laughing at your friend mind you! But that CS really sucks!
