My wife and I are leaving for tuscon thirsday morning...dust devil classic.

This is our first real match in 17 years :o

I have to admit I have no idea what to expect..and I am really freaking out..

If I can trust my old chrono.. I am at about 168...170 pf.

I will run off about 600 rnds tonight and chamber check each one.

I have done about all I can to get our equipment ready.

Its just my most important thing that I am having trouble with...my brain.

Stressed and anxious...

Jim

It is what it is. Accept it.

Know that the A-zone is the same size at Major matches as it is at the practice range. The steel is all the same too.

You'll be using the same ammo you always use and getting the bullets to the target by using the same fundamentals.

I don't think you win or lose your car based on your performance at that match...so have fun.

THE ARE YOU READY CHECKLIST.

1. You've spent plenty of time in dry fire practice. Check

2. You've spent plenty of time in your backyard range practicing. Check

3. You have state of the art gear and you know how to use it. Check

4. You know what you need to know and you know what you can do. Check

5. Go to the match and SHOOT YOUR GAME! Big CHECK

Match nerves are a result of not knowing the unknown. At your first stage you will put a few rounds dead smack center in the "A" zone and walk away with a smirk on your face. Its just like you practiced.

As my daddy used to tell me, "in a hundred years it won't make a bit of difference". So enjoy the moment.

Do good, enjoy and make a few new friends.

Jim,

Little things I have experienced (but not necessarily learned  )

If you are not shooting open, try not to shoot after an open shooter. It always makes me want to go faster.

Forget about the clock. Shoot your game.

Get your hits. This last weekend I experienced first hand that you cannot miss (or shoot D's) fast enough to win. :(

Have fun. It's a game. Enjoy the match.

Jim,

I often get very nervous and anxious before a major match.

That's a good thing.

It says this means something to you.....it matters.

If you don't love the game why play it?

Once the first few rounds go down range and you start to get your head into the game, the nerves will fade away.

Try not to worry, and remember to have fun, because that's what this is.... big fun. ;)

Best wishes,

Tony

Jim,

Good luck, have fun. One thing to think about is keeping your energy levels up where they need to be. When the adrenalin starts to wear off, if you haven't been taking in something, you will be washed up. I take energy bars & make myself eat one after the first couple of stages, & also after the first couple stages after lunch. If I find myself getting cranky or critical, I am past the point of needing something. This sort of thing never happened when I was young but it sure has hit me as I've gotten older. Also, be certain to keep drinking water too. Try to remind your wife & have her remind you to do these things & you will still feel good by the last stage of the day & you'll recover better overnight.

Remember, it isn't life or death, your retirement doesn't depend on it, your kids don't depend on it, it is just for fun!

Make us New Mexicans proud! (when I pm'd you, did I mention I was born in Albuquerque?)

We have shot 5-6 real matches since December...at the club level. This is a major match to start us off again. We are psyched! Jim's a bit tweaked...wound tighter than a two dollar watch. I may have to scrape him off the ceiling before we leave. BTW...sweetheart, you spelled Thursday wrong.

Just imagine all the targets are in their underwear and you will not suffer from anxiety... Or ... am I thinking of something else...? Pay attention to Mr. Miller's advise. Never pass up a water can without taking a nice drink... :)

<_< I like what Criss said about the 10- 20 Majors :D:huh: thats funny to me.

If you stop fealing like you do, its time to stop shooting. I did some math on it and I have shot in over 40 national level events - Shotgun to rifle & handgun matches.

 I still get excited  like when my girlfirend told her parents she was going to spend the night at Cindy's house

Go with it ;)

OH yes and when it is time to shoot- Shoot- Shoot for each A like that is all that you care about.

I still mess up plenty |(So just be nice to your self) if and when you mess up and look for and think about the things that went good

B) good luck :D

You might use the advise of a man who posts here on occassion.

"Either they are all practice sessions or they are all matches."

Thanks to Dennis S.

However after 17 years of playing this game I still get butterflys.

I think I will quit this game when "they" do.

Have fun.

Ok..its been a long day <_<

Loaded 1000 rnds chronoed every 10th round..the all make major @60 degrese and they go minor at about 40 degrese

at 90+ they are 175 pf

things to think about...breathe...relax...all targets (and maybe some competitors ) are only wearing underwear.

Drink water..no coffee..eat power bars..watch listen and learn!!!

Shoot my game (not the GMs game)

I cant help but think..that if I can shoot high B class scores (in my own back yard)

That I should be able to do it anywhere :)

Its a new deal for us...cant wait to go!

Nanci and I are hopeing to make new friends and have a great time!

We hope to meet some of you there.

Thanks to all for the help and support!!

Ok, the results are in...

I had several malfunctions (of the gun type) and a few of the brain type. However, I did get a new Aftec extractor during lunch break the first day. After zeroing one stage I managed 130 out of 200.

I did not get a sunburn even though it was 95-98 degrees both days!

My husband beat me (surprise) but I'll let him tell you his story.

The best part of the match was that I met many nice people. Several willing to offer advice to the old slow chick. Thanks to all..I had lotsa fun!

Nanci :D
