Joe4d Posted April 11 Share Posted April 11 look in the reloading section.. Look at a burn rate chart, pretty much anything from E-3 to unique will make decent 9mm minor ammo. SHooters worlds powders havent taken off in price yet, I stocked up on Accurate 2 / and clean shot.. which is as good as any and better than most. I have a ton of HP-38 so that is what I will be using until my supply is exhausted. I was just hoping that someone would post an approximate amount of grains to use with 147g coated round nose for Minor PF. I appreciate the information though ! Who cares what you do, the OP asked for a coated load at minor and you provided useless FMJ data. P.S. The last time I chronographed it I got: 147 gr Brazos coated 9mm + 3.2 gr HP38 = 882 fps f 129 in Springfield 1911A1 for IDPA ESP. Same load with Gallant 147 flat point about the same. At the bell, they come out of their corners like crazed Spartans! ysrracer lands a glancing blow to open the round! The blow doesn't seem to faze 4n210, however and he responds with a solid... I mean devastating body blow! ysrracer is backing up, looking to regroup! And that's the bell, ending round 1 of this slugfest. More after this... Hey, O.P. I use that same load of 231 (3.2 gr) under my 147s, and I have some coated 155gr which I shoot the same charge. Nice load. Remember (if it hasn't come up yet) that you may have to change your O.A.L. depending on the bullet you are shooting (profile, ogive, etc) and it will feel different in your gun than lighter projectiles in regard to muzzle rise and recoil. If any powder is better for 9mm than HP-38 or w231, I can state I have not seen it. forgive me for wanting to find fault with a powder that was designed for another service... so I'll skip that. what got me to stick with hp38/w231 is a level of performance more consistent than my shooting. To expand this a bit, I tried n320 (I hope I remembered that correctly) it seemed much the same and as it is harder to find and higher cost, I have not gone seeking it. (buuut I will buy it.) That comment is good for the other one I was told has merit. in that alternate powders got me much the same result. in terms of accuracy anyway... hp-38/w231 is a very good starting point and as you try other powders you can be confident in your results when comparing them. if you start chasing 9 major power factors or driving compensators then other powders may give you better results miranda Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It means that you can safely use any load data for a bullet of a given weight. Jacketed, plated, coated, pick a load, chrono it, have fun. Loading 9mm mInor isn't rocket surgery. I could see instantly my brass was cleaner when I switched (only because I ran out of 320 and it’s currently unobtanium) Cheaper AND cleaner? Win win.
