Vincerama
Why would you do this? I mean, OK, I know why ... to make it shorter, but was the inch making that much different?

NoSteel
I've been tempted more than once to get rid of the "nub" and taper back the bottom lug but just haven't wanted to risk ruining the crown. Is it very difficult to do it right??

How much did we spend over the years to get basically a stock 929 and some people are cutting them down.

Daniele
Well done! 5" is enough in semiauto, in revo 4" or something more get the same performances. Plus, 4" is OK for IDPA
ysrracer
I chrono'd it with factory 9mm ammo before and after cutting the barrel. There's virtually no difference in velocity.

Alaskan454
I milled the nub off of mine, but you really took some length off!
Distant Thunder
Since there's so little difference in velocity I'm wondering if S&W's purpose for the longer barrel was more for an increased sight radius. I seem to recall Rob shooting 9mm out of his 5" Performance Center 627-4 (chambered for 38 Super) and making power factor quite easily.
ysrracer
My understanding, and I could be wrong, is both the 627 and 929 have a .357 barrel.

That is what has been said. I can’t remember if somebody actually slugged the barrel when they first came out. I think there is an earlier discussion on this some where in the forums. I know a friend of mine has the 627 in 38 super and the barrel is .357.
ysrracer
I checked, and yes. My gunsmith slugged my 627 & 929 and both had a .357 barrel.
revoman
I actually had a .356 barrel put on mine and .358 bullets still group the best.

That's the plan but you'll note there is a slight chamfer on the opening before the threads start, I have to mill one up that will leave enough to fill the void. Plan to angle the lug back a little also....
