speedracer08
I have a few metal grips that I would like coated black. What is the best finish that will not make the grip slick but will hold up to abuse? What are the best places to have them done and an aproximate cost? MissionaryMike
I’ve been researching Gun Kote by KG Industries. Seems like pretty excellent stuff. I think the Navy or the Marines uses this coating exclusively.
bkrumme
The only PT grips I've ever seen with a finish on them came from Atlas. Pretty sure that's a DLC finish and tons of places to PVD/DLC.
ltdmstr
H&M black nitride. Probably the hardest, most durable black finish you'll find. I have less wear on guns with black nitride than on my SV which is DLC. Gun Kote, Cerakote, or similar aren't even close.

I've had a blackish PVD on one of my SV carry gun's grip and my sweat caused it to rust right through. I had to start wiping it down daily with a silicon cloth. My new work gun from CK will be black nitride. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it holds up.
speedracer08
So it sounds like nitride is the way to go, but what are some options on places to send them to and estimated cost? I looked at the H&M website but didn't see any pricing information. I will probably email them but it's nice to have options.
magpulled
I had mine ceracoated black and it turned out pretty good and hasn’t really worn at all surprisingly.
enzo357
Local guy gave me a deal on ceracote. Holding up really well.
tcazes
i have mine in the raw finish from atlas and its held up beautifully.
echotango
Both of mine are raw. I would not put a coating on it as I would imagine it would dull the sharp edges.
assaulter
I'd go black nitride through H&M. It is not a coating, it is a chemical process of which the end result is a black color.

Do you think hard chrome would dull the edges. IF I ever go steel grip again I thought of matte finish hard chrome for my brushed chrome guns? FlightMedic376
I am getting ready to send mine to get ionbond. Talked to the applicator and costs around $130 for grip, mainspring housing, beavertail.

About the same as any other salt bath nitride finish. Glock slide (tenifer ), Melonite, etc...

I had the PT Evo grip hard chromed with a matte finish to match the frame on my Akai and it didn't dull the edges at all, I'm very happy with the end result. IF I ever go steel grip again I thought of matte finish hard chrome for my brushed chrome guns? I don't know how any coating would not dull the edges. Perhaps an ionbond or nitride would be ok, but anything else would not be as sharp. Perhaps I described it incorrectly. It won't dull the edges, the edges won't be as sharp with a coating. Not sure how it could.
