gearguywb
I won a certificate for 8lbs of Hodgdon powder. I have used Clays for some time but am open to trying something else. My only other Hodgdon experiment was with TiteGroup. Shot well but had a fair amount of muzzle flash on the indoor range. Suggestions? Thanks!!! Poppa Bear
For 40 Universal is a good choice. Easy major without the spikes of Clays. If you shoot an STI loaded long Clays still works.
blaster113
HP38 is a pretty good all around powder. Works OK with .40 major though its a little dirty. Also supposed to work good with 9mm and .45. Its the Hodgdon version of Winchester 231. If I had to stock one all around cheap pistol powder it would be HP38
jmbaccolyte
Are you loading for major power factor or just mild practice loads? What overall cartridge length are you using? What bullet weight(s) are you planning on using?
us_shooter
Titegroup is my go to for 40.
Steve RA
Try 4756, works like a champ in a friends Glock. 6gr for 180 Lead SWC and 7gr for 155 Lead SWC. Edited July 3, 2013 by Steve RA

What bullet weight(s) are you planning on using? Major PF. Loaded long overall (On vacation but I believe they are 1.19). Typically 180 jacketed (some plated). Thanks! GuildSF4
Titegroup and Universal Clays. Depends on which I can find.

kevin c
I'm using Universal for both 9mm and 40 over moly bullets, saving the N320 for match ammo. The UC loads work pretty well so far.
Waterfowl-widowmaker
Titegroup has always done pretty good for major pf.
Joe4d
WST ( now marketed by Hodgdon) poor mans 320. I dont get the universal comments though. Pretty slow burning powder not really suited for game loads.
gearguywb
Has anyone tried both Universal and WST? Thoughts?
yoshidaex
WST is inverse temp sensitive so be aware of that. Other than that its a good powder for 40.
MarkCO
If you can get WST, that is what I would go with.
jmbaccolyte
WST. With 180 grain bullets and an overall length of 1.19", I'd start at about 4.5 grains and work up to desired pf.

Bob DuBois
Put a lot of rounds down range with Titegroup using 175 cast bullets loaded long 1,220. Titegroup works fine in my 9mm minor Trojan also. Use HS6 in my open 38 Super. HP38 and Winchester 231 are the same powder. Will work in 9mm, 38 special, 40 and 45. Might not be the best in any one caliber but great for the loader wanting one powder for general calibers.
