I would definitely make the Jump if I were in your shoes. I would bet that you won’t regret it. Just make sure you get something quality.

Do the majority of open shooters use Checkmates or 2011? I think you know what you need to do.

In my opinion it’s not as good as shooting major ammo. Assuming that’s what you use in a match. The timing and concussion is different. The point of impact can be different. You can get value out of it. It just not as good as shooting your match ammo.

How is that optic mount attached? Did you screw into the polymer or is there something else in there?

It depends what you do and what your goals are. Do you spend a lot of money traveling to major matches? Say something does go wrong. Are you ok spending all that money. Getting to a major and having your gun malfunction on the first stage. Then spending the rest of the match with the gun malfunctioning on every stage. Maybe multiple times? i properly maintain my guns. It’s rare that I need to use my backup gun. But if my primary malfunctions once. I would switch to my backup. This goes for any piece of gear. Magazine. Etc. I have taken my backup to probably 30-40 matches and just recently had to use it. Primary malfunctioned on the first stage. I didn’t think anything of it. Had to rack a round. it happened again on stage 3. At this point I had dug myself a pretty deep hole. Switched to my backup, which ran great the rest of my match. Was almost able to claw my way back. so it’s not always true that having to switch to your backup means your match is over either. if you don’t travel to majors, then you probably don’t need to have a backup.

I have the shoto on one of my open guns. It's pretty good. It's a traditional comp. It will definitely be better for your purposes.

There is a rule that allows you to forgo using a belt loop. 5.2.3 “the belt or the inner belt or both must be EITHER SECURELY FIXED AT THE WASTE or secured with a minimum of three belt loops” Also see 5.2.3.1 so any Yoga pants you want to wear are fine as long as you can wear your belt tight enough it doesn’t move.

You have to call to order a 9 major gun. But it’s possible. I have a couple friends who have done it recently.

I think that lead times will be your issue. If your looking at having it this season. A lot of builders are 8-12+ months out. I have ANOTHER Rafferty on order. Usually a 9 month lead time. But worth the wait.

I think your referring to CK. They went out of business I believe. but just about any builder will build you a less ornate gun for less. I highly recommend Rafferty Custom Guns.

Ya. I bought them and sent them off to infinity to be tuned and plated with 24k gold. It was super affortable. Only $7500 for a set of 6 mag. Looking forward to shooting my 38sc through them. Hopefully I will have my fararri back from the shop by the time they come back so I can drive it over to the range and test fire.

You will absolutely blow your gun up and probably find your hand in the next bay at the range. Titegroup is a powder that very quickly ramps up pressure past minor power factor loads. So even going a little over minor can be unsafe. Hope your trolling.

It's really impossible to know. Open guns are like race cars. Every part is a consumable. So things are going to break. How often is a mystery. Depending on if the metal had any flaws to begin with. How well it was fitted. How the slide cuts and tri topping were done. What load you shoot. And on and on. You could have a slide crack at 5,000 rounds. Or it could go 50,000 rounds. But eventually things will break and need to be replaced. This is just a cost of open, should be budgeted for and shouldn't be looked at as a bad thing. Things can break and 100% not be the builders fault. Even if it breaks with low round count. This is a reason that most large gun builders get out of building open guns eventually when they can. They are just a huge percentage of their warranty claims. Even when it's past warranty and your paying to fix it. Its time consuming. So the only answer I can give you is IDK. My current plan is to buy a new gun every year and sell my old one. So I never have a gun with a ton of rounds on it. This makes it less likely to have a huge failure at a major. Plus a gun with low wear and round count will fetch the best price. Yes. I am probably paying the cost of a slide replacement every year. But at least I can plan for it. It's not a surprise. Your guess of 100,000-200,000 rounds is likley pretty high. Some people say .38sc guns last a bit longer. Not sure how much I buy that. But If I were budgeting. I would budget for a slide replacement every 30k rounds just to be on the safe side.

Available spots could just be people that haven't squaded. No way of telling if or when you might get in. Without knowing how far down the wait-list you are. I know of people getting accepted a couple days before the match.

SS, PROD, REV are taking a big hit. Def not as big for open.

I use a thumb rest and I really like it. I really like the RPG2 Thumbrest. Check it out. It has a great angle. Grippy but also comfortable.

I highly recommend Pat Rafferty. Rafferty custom guns. I have my 2nd gun coming from him any day. Venom is great as well. Any builder worth buying from seems to be backlogged many months. So ordering now would put you into next season probably. There seems to be quite a few quality custom used guns on the market if you want to get going now. I think Pat might have one of his older guns for sale.

Buy once cry once. Save up and buy a quality 2011. You won't be sorry. I would also recommend Rafferty. You will be hard pressed to find better quality at that price point. Very reasonable.

You might have a hard time fitting enough powder in a 9mm with 3n38. I would recommend HS6 or Shooters World Major Pistol

I've been to other matches where that's happened. For instance last year at the Magnus Cup there was a huge rain storm and they moved us to a different zone. Ideally you walk all the stages prior to the match starting. Then freshen up before you shoot that section.
