I've noticed that most people that buy a "cheaper" open gun usually buy a more expensive one within a year or so. Like your buddy. So you would actually be saving yourself money to just go with a high quality 2011 out of the gate. You don't have to spend 6k+ to get a custom gun with a builder who will stand behind it. There are a few smaller builders who are a bit less then that for their higher end guns The can also build them for less with things like polymer grips and not using hybrid barrels etc. I would base your decision more on what you get excited about and less on the amount of money. I wasn't wanting to argue. Just saying he shouldn't let the cost of 2 open guns keep him from switching. Not everyone can afford to purchase 2 out of the gate. It's very rare that you will switch to your backup. The shooting community is awesome too. If your gun goes down there is a good chance someone will help you out. Be it loaning you a part or a gun. Ya. It would be nice. To have 2 or 3 open guns but you don't have to. If he buys a brand new Atlas or similar quality gun. It should be reliable for quite a while. Depending on how much you shoot. I sold my backup gun at the beginning of this season to help finance building a new gun. I have run my main gun all season, gone to 10 majors, and never needed a backup gun. I used to have a lot of ammo that didnt case guage. Then I switched to the Lee undersize die and full length crimp die and now I never have a round that doesnt case guage. Not over exadurating. Never. I still case guage because it's a extra insurance policy but in the thousands of rounds since getting those dies I have not had one fail.

I get similar residue in my gun from HS6. Which people say is a somewhat dirty powder. But it just wipes off. I usually keep a microfiber cloth handy and keep my gun pretty oiled up. I wipe it off every 300 rounds or so. Or after every match. Mainly the chamber and feedramp area and put more oil on it.

I recommend Pat Rafferty. Rafferty Custom Guns. He might be able to build you a custom near that range. His attention to detail is insane. Look him up on the book of faces or the gram.

Their ammo works great. Passed chrono at a couple majors for me when I first started shooting open. Buy with confidence

I have a very similar gun. I shoot 115gr Everglades JHP V2 under 8.8gr HS6 at 1.165 shoots very nice. I use a 8# variable recoil spring. I am wondering if the open gun you shot that felt like a .22 was shooting minor power factor loads? Open gun should not feel like a .22. It should feel like a hand cannon but with less muzzle flip and dot movement. I would suggest trying a few different powders. Maybe go to a match and see if you can get a couple open shooters to let you try a couple of their loads. Almost all of my local friends are shooting HS6 and 115s
