  1. IMHO, I like brazos, style holes, I don't like holes that are visible from top of slide. I also think holes in side and top will cause mirage from heat coming off. There are lots of threads, Benny mention 12oz maybe 11oz for 40cal slide. The gallery has tons of ideas, my 5inch is there. I drilled two holes in rear of my slide fore and aft of extractor nub. My next project is a 6in bushing slide, will have 5 brazos holes, recoil spring plug cut, scallop reliefs, two holes in rear. But if that does get it down to 12oz I bought a long mill, to reach down through the recoil plug area, cut some off the sides there, and then all way up to top off the slide and take more off there but don't pierce the top of slide. Have them flatop the slide also.
  2. Benny, That's exactly what I found most of the filing was done on sides not the top between the lugs. Thanks for the spec on how much lockup. IT is really great that accomplished Gunsmiths will take the time to talk to beginners and share their experiences. Ron Powers one time talked to me almost for hour on phone detailing what he does to a new smith for tune up. Again Thanks Benny!!!!!!!!
  3. buy a new latch, and package of three thickness clips from brownells, clean up the new latch sharp edges, install with a little play and forget about it. Easy, cheap, fast
  4. The Nowlin barrel said don't cut the top lugs your firing pin will be off center. This is my second nowlin/sti and I've had to cut the lugs a fair amount to center the firing pin, anybody notice that. Also the STI slides with other barrels, same problem ??????
  5. You've missed the history lesson, long time ago 45 loads were hot, remember trying to use comps on 45's. So guide rods were used to add a little weight to front end. Also first guide rods use a flange type reverse plug, that did crack with time. Bull barrels also added to this. Then came barrel bushing with fingers aka Colt that broke off. So today we have shoulder type recoil plug which is very strong and takes the stress off the bushing. I run shoulder type plug, setup for a bushing. But I'm trying to lower my nose weight. So for a defense gun, the table edge push loading is a good idea, also probably keeps the dirt out.
  6. My 6" unique slide came in from STI yesterday, with sight cuts, flattop etc that I ordered. I'll be mating it with a tactical frame, going with the Brazos style holes in slide, recoil plug cut, Holes in rear of slide also. plus going to use the recoil plug cut to reach inside the slide and do some more lightening that won't show on outside. My goal is 12oz with sights and everything else. That way it will weight the same as my 5". Then I be able to compare the two. They will identical except for that one inch. Going to fit the barrel and test fire, then off for milling, then install the sites.
  7. Mar 25, 6:24 AM (ET) By GEORGE MERRITT DENVER (AP) - A gun belonging to the pilot of a US Airways plane went off as the aircraft was on approach to land in North Carolina over the weekend, the first time a weapon issued under a federal program to arm pilots was fired, authorities said. The "accidental discharge" Saturday aboard Flight 1536 from Denver to Charlotte did not endanger the aircraft or the 124 passengers, two pilots and three flight attendants aboard, said Greg Alter of the Federal Air Marshal Service on Monday. "We know that there was never any danger to the aircraft or to the occupants on board," Alter said. It is the first time a pilot's weapon has been fired on a plane under a program created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to allow pilots and others to use a firearm to defend against any act of air piracy or criminal violence, he said. The Transportation Security Administration is investigating how the gun discharged and is being assisted by the Air Marshal Service, Alter said. Officials did not say where the bullet hit. The service declined to release additional details. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said his agency is also investigating to make sure that the plane is safe. The Airbus A319 has been removed from service, the airline said. The TSA initially opposed the Flight Deck Officer program to arm and train cockpit personnel. Agency officials worried that introducing a weapon to commercial flights was dangerous and that other security improvements made it unnecessary. Congress and pilots backed the program. "The TSA has never been real supportive of this program," said Mike Boyd, who runs the Colorado-based aviation consulting firm The Boyd Group. "It's something I think Congress kind of put on them." Pilots must volunteer, take a psychological test and complete a weeklong firearms training program run by the government to keep a gun in the cockpit. Boyd said he supports the program to arm pilots, saying, "if somebody who has the ability to fly a 747 across the Pacific wants a gun, you give it to them." But he said Saturday's incident could have been much worse. "If that bullet had compromised the shell of the airplane, i.e., gone through a window, the airplane could have gone down," he said.
  8. Do the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is one definition of insantity. We've tried the logic of less guns less crime and statistics after statistics has proven this wrong. Actually I think it is the spoon fault not the fork. Ban spoons larger than 1/2 teaspoon. The anti-gunners, kinda remind me of religious nuts, and MAC lovers. They are a dedicated group and won't be swayed by logic.
  9. cspan is swamped, can't connect
  10. Once it is finally recognized as individual right, then it will become a state affair to regulate. Which leads to more cases. Then the cases will be somewhat like the right to free speech. You can't yell fire in a theatre. Your individual right is superceded by collective right of the crowd to safety. But this good, because they will need evidence to make case and modern statistic have proven that armed society is a safe society. SO what I'm hoping for is that if your a person with no history of violence you can have machine, suppressors etc. They may still have to be registered, but things like $200 doc stamps will disappear.
  11. Keep rifle plates seperate from Pistol plates. Rifles even at 100 yards on BR500 steel will still look like bad case of acne. Now use those plates at 30 feet with JHP pistol and spatter will happen. This something most clubs don't pay attention too. Make sure you post a notice, shoot with AP rifle and you bought the plate.
  12. MAybe they thought it was air plant
  13. Ah good old days of the Nuns.... I was bigger than most kids my age and was heading toward being a bully. So the wise nuns but me in the Gym class with kids three grades ahead of me. Now I wasn't the biggest anymore. Still had lots of fights but also got my Arse kicked a few times which gives you a better attitude. The nuns kinda had general rule if the fight was evenly matched, and nobody was using anything but fists, they just ignored it. In high-school all the Jesuit priest could box. So if you were really wanted to, get in the ring with them and they kick your butt. Men and Boys are violent, you can't eliminate, only direct it and control it.
  14. Bio diesel from sawgrass works and is relatively cheap. Kinda works like a mircobrewery, but then if we started using diesel, farmers and other small groups could make and sell there own fuel. Big oil wouldn't like that. Geothermal around yellowstone could generate alot of electricity but you would have to rebuild our nation electric grid, nobody is interested in that. My view of the problem is that the long term ill is so much of our money is leaving the country instead of staying hear to build wealth and jobs. If we could cut back just say 20% on our usage the price of fuel would fall by 30%. Most electricity in the country is now generated by coal. But virtually all shipping from trains, planes, trucks use oil.
  15. Not a ton of experience, but IMHO the STI slides are soft, plus my breachface looked like it was EDM cut and was ruff, mild case of acme. So I polished the breachface before use. This is also one of the tune up items Dawson does on STI guns. This might be a good reason for chrome plating.
  16. sounds like a weak spring, badly tuned mag, especially if only one mag is doing this.
  17. For comparison puposes and because I like building them. I'm doing a STI tactical frame with bushing barrel in 5 and 6. The 5 is already done, waiting for 6 slide to come in from Dawson. Going to cut enough metal off the 6 so that it weighs the same as the 5. Same sights, Nowlin bushing barrel. I'll post when I'm done. I'm curious to see the difference in handling and sight radius makes. For my two uses, IPSC and plate shooting.
  18. I think he needs some rotational spin to stabilize the projectile. What is also fun when fish aren't biting is to tie a peanut and small casting sinker onto your line then cast to where squirrels will find the peanut. Then enjoy the fun of reeling them in, they will fight like small bass!!! Things to do when bored
  19. A few years back the dept of corrections made there ranges open to the public for one year. Then the proviso law expired and I couldn't get any politicians to sponsor it with a large campaign donation. The club did well, had no problems working with the prison, even got recommendation that they be glad to have us back. As our funds were used to fix up the range which had had no budget for 10 years. However the Tallahassee Dept of Correction didn't like it. They put some hoops in place, like you had to be a IPSC club, range insurance, certified Ro's, plus every member had to have a background check done. Make sure we aren't training terroists, also no visitors, again those pesky terroist might come and watch. However they cleared anybody I email in, in about 3 days. should we start a petition again!?!?!?!?
  20. In florida for one year they let the public use the Dept of Corrections ranges. Worked well then the proviso law expired and I couldn't get any politician to sponsor making it permanent without a large campaign contribution. So in florida it would seem the path is open just need deep pockets to get started. Anybody got any good idea, how to start a petition for Florida
  21. That's why they have a ZOOM button on some keyboards
  22. Years ago I had privilege of taking Lethal Force class. My two instructors for the week were Chapman and Ayoob. It was GREAT, they treated the eleven of us in class like family. Went to diner with us all, drank some beers and told some great stories. I was just starting to build 1911's then and Chapman let me take his 45 apart and take some detailed photo's. Also thank CenTx for that photo. I tried to get American handgunner to sell me a copy and they wouldn't. I will print and frame that one.
  23. Us lefty have always had that advantage
  24. Dawson usually has them in stock. However I would get the Dawson tune package.
