  1. Well, people say lots of things, but that one is incorrect. Smokeless powder is designed to be nearly entirely non-hygroscopic. Now, Gold Bond Powder, that's another matter altogether...... ;-)
  2. I know it sounds strange, but I really like 95-grain MGHPs loaded in 9mm brass to safely make minor (and you're talking around 1350fps). I run this load in my XDs and 1911s. I like a gun that cycles nice and fast, and this load does it for me.
  3. If you're talking about reaming the chamber, that's different than "throating" when used in the context of 1911 pistols and their derivatives. Throating means recontouring and opening up the rear of the barrel and feed ramp to improve feeding.
  4. Yep. For a while. ;-) I agree with Jax.
  5. Could you post an email for her? I don't mind shooting with new people, but maybe we could get a group together Saturday Night for a big feed. Or does the SS Awards come with a meal? If so can a non SS competitor score a seat? C'mon Dave. Seriously now. It's false economy to drive all the way from Topeka for the Revo Nats and not also shoot the SSC while you're there. Seriously. Let some of the moths escape from your wallet and let it happen.
  6. Only on the BE Forum could such a simple question and answer turn into a full-blown conversation.
  7. Those are called "belt keepers." Google it.
  8. At the Kansas Sectional a couple years ago, they had a standards stage that included shots at 75 yards. With a par time, no less!
  9. Me too. Both confirmations arrived yesterday--I will be shooting SS on Saturday and Revo on Sunday. From the flurry of interest we're seeing here, I think both matches will likely fill up. Looks like Phil's decision was a good one.
  10. Looks like we have a big crowd signing up for the 2013 Revolver Nationals! It already appears that Phil's idea was a big winner. My application went out in today's mail, along with my Single Stack Nationals slot. Back-to-back old-school action!
  11. Very well stated. I'll say it again--there is no real reason why Nationals cannot be a profitable venture for USPSA without raising entry fees. My entry fees for everything else in life are going up in January because certain other leadership can't manage to keep their spending under control. We can certainly do better in this organization.
  12. Something is going on. I buy in bulk via mail-order and I'm always stocked up. But I was in Sportsman's Warehouse last night and noticed they had absolutely no .22LR ammo! Normally they have a whole bunch.
  13. When I saw a lightly used Les Baer custom 5" 9mm on Gunbroker, I decided I better buy it because I would probably never see another one. My gun has a correct two-tone finish, 20-lpi checkering on the front strap, 1-1/2" guarantee at 50 yards, and it runs perfectly. I installed a FO front sight and tuned the trigger. I cannot imagine how a 1911 in 9mm could be any better.
  14. I would recommend running iron sights and saving up for a C-More. It's almost always false economy to spend money on a cheap scope. I have the sideways mount from Bearcave Machining (available from the Dillon catalog and elsewhere) on one of my Buckmarks, and I really like it. I can switch back and forth between my iron-sighted and scoped pistols during the same match and never have a problem finding the dot, because the sideways mount puts the C-More as low as possible to the boreline. It's very close to the same sight plane as the iron sights.
  15. The Hearthco clips are indispensable for the 8-shooters. Period. However, I have a set of them for .45 ACP and have only used them once. I don't see any performance benefit over the regular Ranch Products brand, and I like being able to pre-load enough moonclips (that have been pre-tested in my cylinder) for the whole day. It seems to me that in the .45 revolvers, a little bit of moonclip slop is actually a good thing.
  16. Seems like I tried the Mec-Gars and they weren't quite long enough to work with big basepads. I went with factory Para mags and Dawson pads.
  17. C'mon Warren, that's slow ol' Bianchi Cup stuff you're talkin'. The dude is trying to learn how to mash the gas! ;-)
  18. You can polish it and smooth it up, but don't make any significant changes in the dimensions. That little arrow is pointing at the primary safety feature of the S&W revolver design. Tread cautiously.
  19. Good attitude! (Every time I've run a match I am reminded how pissy some people get when they're not squadded with their little butt buddies from back home.)
  20. She should continue to enjoy learning the fundamentals with her rimfires for a couple more years. Sorry, but 9 years old is too young to be shooting USPSA matches.
  21. We did a snubby steel match last year, and I set up a 2" Model 10. We were limited to 5 shots, but a good K-frame action is much nicer than anything you can get out of a J-frame. We had a variety of stuff show up, including a few guns that were definitely over the stated barrel length limit--but we were just messing around for fun, so we let them shoot anyway. This thread gives me fond memories of the old "New York Reload" steel matches we used to shoot years ago back east.....those matches required you to run your main gun dry, then dump it on a carpeted table and grab your back-up piece to finish the run. Mas Ayoob dominated those matches pretty handily early on, until finally one of the young wheelgunners got good enough to beat him most of the time.....
  22. (WTF?) Bubberizing is something you do to a speedloader. Not a hammer!
  23. Then why have they drifted away from every other type of shooting competition, other than the one very specific match where they are "grooved in"? Yeah, they're good shooters, but they get clobbered when they get outside their comfort zone.
  24. Vegas is a great venue for a national championship event. There is no place on Earth with more entertainment options. And if you just feel like relaxing, you can ignore all the traditional Vegas stuff and simply stay at a decent motel near the range. The last two years I stayed at the Best Western on Sahara just a few minutes from the range, and it worked out great. You don't have to drink and gamble if you don't want to! I see no point in St. George, Utah. If you're going to move the match away from all the entertainment options that Las Vegas offers, put it in another part of the country altogether.
