  1. A range closer to home would do a lot for me. I have an hour drive one way right now. I'd love to be able to put rounds downrange every night. Dryfire does wonders, but there is only so much room in the garage. If I could get live rounds down range, with actual stages and drills, more than once a week, I think I would see big improvements quickly. The wife and I have talked extensively that our next move, when we outgrow our current house, MUST be closer to a range. No exceptions. Luckily she agrees 1,000 %.
  2. 1000% agreed. Just seeing 2011's on screen in their natural environment got me hooked, and from there it was mindless good fun. However. I do remember the courtroom scene was a little intense, with the prosecutor trying to condemn him for being a practical shooter. That hurt. The reaction from the spectators when he dropped the mag in the opening scene....hysterical!
  3. Amen to that! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that in a few months Brigadier and Vertec slides will be on the Brownells parts schematic. Wishful thinking indeed, but who'd of thought that these guns would make it back into production? The one that I would really like to see is the G-SD. I would have to scoop up one or two of those if they were released again. I wouldn't mind another E2 either.
  4. I remember the first time I completely disassembled my Trubor a few years ago...it was a nerve wracking event. Now I can do it in my sleep. You will be fine.
  5. Doesn't sound like they will make enough to get it approved for Production. Don't care for the Wilson price tag either. It's really just an Elite II with a rail.
  6. Every 1911 and 2011 should come with an Aftec.
  7. Where is everyone getting their info about this new model?
  8. Depends on the stage layout and where I think the best spot to reload will be.
  9. I have never been able to get 147's to work with Titegroup in any gun except my brother's Sig. They always tumble in anything else.
  10. I saw the title of the thread and thought "oh boy, here we go again." Then I opened it. After I picked myself up off the floor and made sure my heart was beating again, I agree. That thing is beyond words. Many congrats!!!!
  11. I went with a Trubor when I started, and it still runs perfect. Lots of opinion on the matter, stock versus a custom build, but I wanted a new gun and didn't want to wait for months. I was shooting mine 3 days after I made the call to order it. I changed the mount to a horizontal and added an Aftec after the stock extractor started losing tension at about 6,000 rounds. Otherwise mine is completely stock, not even a trigger job. I have no issue being competitive against equally classified shooters with custom built 2011's. It doesn't look as pretty as some others but it runs and that's all that counts when the timer beeps. With that being said, I still want a nice custom 2011 built to my specs, but the Trubor has been a great starter Open gun for me.
  12. Royal Purple here. Tried it on my Open gun and now it on everything.
  13. Aftec Extractor. It's basically hinged at the firing pin stop, and has tiny springs inside the extractor tunnel to provide tension. I can't fathom ever owning another 1911/2011 without one.
  14. I think the answer to those extractor problems is the Aftec, at least it was for my Trubor. I dont need to worry about tension anymore, although it still needs cleaning regularly.
  15. I on the other hand, run my 140 mags exactly as they come out of the bag! They work just fine for my Open gun, so I spend the time and effort on the big sticks.
  16. I'm also using silicone to keep the spacers in place with the SNL pads. So far no issues. I just use the Permatex black RTV I had in my toolbox.
  17. I saw your post, and I am so happy someone else is having this problem! Wait, I mean, I am sorry you are having issues, but glad you posted about it! I went through this EXACT same problem with my Trubor last month. All this time I thought I just had bad luck... I had 3 mags that were just about impossible to shoot, and the rest were sporadic. After toying with the mag catch and overtravel, I finally filed down the inside, forward, upper edge of the trigger bow to gain some clearance. You could see the offending area sticking out a little when you looked down the magwell. I only took a few thousandths off, and now it runs perfect, with all of my magazines.
  18. I went with the Brazos horizontal mount on my Trubor. I liked the plain look, and it cleared my stock slide.
  19. My personal solution to the target focus dilemma was an Open gun.
  20. After 7 years of Production, I picked up an Open gun this year, but have kept shooting Production and other iron sight stuff on a regular basis. I'm rotating back and forth a lot, sometimes on the same weekend, or even same day. It's killing me! I occasionally find myself shooting the Open gun like a Production gun, and vice versa. My friends say it's hysterical to watch. I have a list of things that haunt me on both guns, but the one that gets me the most is the visual difference between iron and dot guns...target focus versus front sight. I'm ok with the Open gun, but I forget to look at the sights when I am shooting irons, staring at targets expecting to see a magic dot appear. I do give myself dryfire transition time, but it might take a moment to remember what I am shooting after the buzzer goes off! Major versus Minor scoring gets me sometimes. I find myself taking time to make up Charlies with the Open gun, and I don't think that 1 point is always worth it. There are other things too. My sloppy reloads into that huge hole on the bottom of the Open gun don't quite work as well with the Production rig. I have a lot more confidence with longer & tighter shots on the Open gun, and my shot calling feels 100% accurate with the dot; my late 30 something eyes don't always register what the front sight is telling me. I have much more confidence in stage breakdown with the Production gun just from experience. But, honestly, I have really loved this adventure. The Open gun has been a great teaching tool, and it's a real confidence booster (shooting on the move, shot calling, etc.). I am learning that almost everything I can do with the Open gun, I can do with any other gun. The other big difference between the two is the big stupid grin on my face when I am running Open. It's a hoot!!!!
  21. I used the Brazos mount on my Trubor. .032 clearance between slide and optic. I also picked up a Camerons mount, but chose the Brazos because of the set back. The Camerons cleared my slide just fine. Maybe STI misdrilled the frame. There is a thread here somewhere with a drawing of the frame hole measurements, I think Cheely posted it.
  22. I saw the pics, and calling this the "Perfect Open Gun Optic" is the biggest understatement in history. Perfect doesn't even begin to describe how amazing this is. My one selfish wish for this, if it becomes reality, is a version that will easily be retrofitted to existing frames that are already drilled for the...what's that other optic called again? I already forgot....
  23. The only question I can answer from experience is the screws. I used a Dremel cut off wheel to zip them down to the right length. Worked perfect. I think the screw length will ultimately depend on which mount you use.
  24. The mount will fit the hole pattern; I think everyone uses the C-more +2 pattern as standard. You will likely need to heat the screws to get them out, as they use red loctite from the factory. I used a soldering iron to heat mine. The Allen heads stripped out on 3 of the screws so I had to use EZ outs on them. You may also need to cut the new screws to clear the slide inside the frame. Mine were about 3 threads too long. Not a difficult job but took some patience.
  25. I made the 2011 plunge about 2 months ago with a Trubor, and I used 9 Major to break it in, with no issues. It was too tight to run any minor loads for the first few hundred rounds. Your load and your mag combos are similar to mine, and everything runs perfectly. I use the Grams 13 coil springs in the big mag though. My load is 6.9 grains AC making 173 pf, albeit I have a little more barrel than you do. The only change I made to the gun was the optic mount. I was having occasional stovepipes hanging up under the vertical mount, so I took the easy route and swapped to a Brazos horizontal. Only problem I have now is the gun is a much better shooter than the guy driving it.
