  1. I'm sort of wondering if people are loading the 929 like it's a 38 spl.. You need remember that we can use 3 or 3.5 gr of fast powder X and not have extraction issues since it's relatively low pressure in the 38/357.. maybe at most 20k psi.. the 9mm is generally a higher pressure round and we need to bring that into consideration. I tried loading my 38 super 627 like I did my 357-627 and it just couldn't be done. I tried about 10 different powders before settling in to using Herco and 147 gr extremes.. A relatively slow burning powder (as compared to N320, N310, Bullseye, 231, etc) and I stopped encountering any case sticking issues and my PF is right where I need it, at about 134 PF. I could probably drop by .2 to 4.3 gr but why mess with something that now works.. I worked up the load from 4.5 - 5.5 by .2 gr. PF went from a low of 134 to 150 at the top end.. and I still had at least another 1/2 grain to work up if I wanted to.. (which I did not need to). If I were loading the 9mm in the 929, I would stick to powders that are inthe medium to medium slow range to get positive extraction and lower pressures. HS6, Autocomp, Unique, Herco, N340, WSF, or something similar in burn rate.. with the 6.5" tube and minor PF, the recoil and blast is going to be negligible.. It's not like we're trying to shoot 9 major.. Something to ponder..
  2. Since I stick to 55 gr and below, I tend to use Accurate 2015.. it is rated on the faster side for .223/5.56 and produces adequate gas pressure for the lighter bullets.. I'm just a middle of the road rifle shooter that mostly shoots local matches.. so ymmv..
  3. When I am the MD of the Norcal Section Golden Bullet, I try to do as good a job as they do at Area 2. It's been a long time since I've been there and I'll be returning this week after a 12 year span of not being able to make it back till now.. I'm lucky in Richmond that we have a pretty talented bunch of people from the Norcal region that step up and help me run our match. I am looking forward to seeing how The Desert Classic has improved over these last 12 years.
  4. Hi-tech ammo has had CSB1 (A Universal substitute) available for months and he still has it.. I just went to the web site this morning and found that they have a rifle powder, WC 845, which appears according to the data as a powder that S&B commercial loads. It appears to be right in between WC844 and WC 846 burn rate wise.. I'd pick some up but I'm short of funds.. Maybe one of you other tinkerers will pick up some and report back. I've had pretty good luck with the CSB-1 and have a lot of data worked up for it in the 40 cal. I have some limited 9mm data. It appears to be right in the same range as Hodgdon Universal. It has been rumored to be made by Rio Cartridge company and is a surplus. Hi-tech ammo says he has lots of it.. I was quoted $665/case of 30# to my door. It is likely about the same to the east coast and a bit cheaper in most mid-US cities. Hi-tech ammo sends data with the CSB-1. It lists the common calibers.. 9mm, 38, 357, 40 S&W, 45 acp, and 44 magnum.
  5. Not to mention the fact that at the IRC I have seen stages with as many as 51 rounds required (almost 3 stages in IDPA).. The idea for ICORE is a combination of USPSA, Steel Challenge, and Bianchi. At least that's what I was always under the impression of. Since I didn't see the Original post, I'm sort of wondering what happened?
  6. Well this is nice... it's actually closer to me than Morro Bay..
  7. I still prefer my Safariland 002 Cup holster with some modifications for most speed games. It won't work in IDPA, but I can draw from it every bit as fast as from a CR speed (that I tried in the past). The 002 Cup holster is also good for L and K frames since I've used it for those frames as well.
  8. This is the second other CSB powder I've seen.. I've been working with CSB-1 and someone else was asking about CSB6. Where did you get it?
  9. I was on wait list... and they cashed my check this week so I guess I'm in..
  10. Hmm, sounds interesting.. and I'm going to miss it this year.. aw well.. looking forward to what people say about it.. It's certainly going to now be different enough..
  11. Seems bogus.. he uttered the words.. he owns them.. and the shooter did what he heard... which is why when the shooter is in the prep phase and in the box, I do not say anything other than range commands.. I had this happen once before when I uttered the words "range going hot" and the competitor heard "Load and make ready" which were the commands at the time.. It looks like he was hunting for a reason to dq someone.. my opinion..
  12. My club allows semi-auto's to shoot with us.. It provides opportunity to club members that don't have a wheel gun to shoot with 8 shot limits (usually single stack and production shooters come to play) and show how our match runs as opposed to USPSA matches where going fast is better than being accurate.. they learn to slow down and make their hits which benefits them in the other sport and shows how effective wheel guns can be.. We usually have less than 25 ppl for the ICORE match as opposed to up to 100 who shoot the USPSA matches.. so it's not like we don't have the capacity..
  13. At the California Action Shotgun Challenge yesterday, there wasn't a stage with fewer than 24 rounds... A mix of Slug & Birdshot, Buck & bird, or all bird shot... Personally, I use 5 - 6 packs and a single AP custom 3x3. 36 rds total.. I like to be able to carry several options in case I find my usual shells do not put down specific kinds of steel.
  14. In the run up to the nationals we just broke a record at our last club match.. 104 shooters through 5 stages.. and we were done by 3:30 pm.. We've had anywhere from 60 (on the low end) to 104 (record number) all summer.. it will start to likely taper off and we'll get numbers in the 30's or 40's when it starts raining, but if it turns out that match day is nice, we could have as many as 75-80 on a winter sunday.. Our usual big number matches used to be 50-60... things have definitely picked up in the last few years.. We don't usually get more than about 40 or so at our limited number of multi gun matches.. the one we had last week had something like 30 shooters..
  15. I've seen a lot of people try to go cheap and load the 38 short colt with really fast powders (think clays or Bullseye) and run into issues with stuck cases due to pressure.. One person who seems to have figured this one out, TMC, uses SR 4756 with his 38 Short colt and does not run into the pressure issues at all.. SR 4756 is a slower powder, similar to the Vitt 3N37 or 3N38 and other slow burners.. It is what I would suggest to those going to load these cases that have little capacity.. Even with the new rules, I will continue to shoot a 6 gun.. mostly due to ease and speed of reloads.. I shoot minor now so it's not that big of a deal to me.
  16. Eh, I shoot minor 6 shooter anyway.. It comes down to recoil management and long barrel sight picture.. I don't shoot a revo after the IRC mostly to keep from burning out.. It find that it helps my semi-auto shooting (Production this year) and after October my sights switch completely away from the sport and I do a real practical application of firearms.. Waterfowl hunting.. 8 shot minor, 6 shot minor/major, it just doesn't matter to me to argue about it anymore.. We have icore matches I can shoot my 6 shooter at and if I can practice, I do fairly well.. For me anymore, it's all good trigger time.. For next year.. well, you'll just have to see what I'm up to then.. and I'm sticking to a 6 shooter.. but it won't be the 610 unless brass becomes an issue.. The main reason I don't shoot any other majors is I simply can't afford the travel any longer.. the IRC and the norcal section match are it for me for now..
  17. Whatever USPSA decides, I'm still going to shoot my 6.5" - 610.. I seem to do ok with it at the IRC, and I do just fine with it at USPSA matches.. I choose to shoot minor so I don't have to swap up loads between ICORE and USPSA..I was practicing draws the other day and managed to pull several sub 1 second draws.. and splits in the .22-.26 range.. 6, 7, or 8 shot revolvers all need discipline to shoot only as many shots as are needed and to make every shot count.. add any kind of distance, difficulty, or hard cover/no shoots and the advantage of 8 over 6 doesn't seem to make as much difference.. Since I always shoot the same gun/load combination, I know where my gun is absolutely going to print as long as I do my part.. Consistency is more important to me than more ammo available.. I proved it to myself that more ammo available in a lighter/shorter gun was not conducive to a better match score..What I use works for me.. it may not work for anyone else, but that's really not my problem
  18. Sometimes one of the companies that do the pulldown components gets something in from another country or a commercial reloader goes out of business and they get their hands on stock in that manner.. it pays to pay attention to the retailers who get ahold of those components as they generally go fast..
  19. Most if not all of the ppl using a RN in a 40 do so obliviously or are looking to feed a revolver.. Otherwise at the distances we shoot, there is no difference between RN, RNFP, SWC, HP, etc.. your specific gun may or may not feed one of the mentioned.. but personally the Para that I shoot will feed just about anything.. including an empty case.. RN is generally for moon clipped revolvers and I would say 90% of the cheaper 40 ammo (WWB, etc) is of the Flat point or RNFP design. I've never seen a RN in any factory or remanufactured ammo for the 40. Higher performance ammo tends to be a hollow or soft point design, in general and will have a flat pointed profile, in my experience.
  20. What is your bullet length? If your leade (I think that is what it is called) is a little shallow, the truncated cone bullet may be contacting the rifling just enough to prevent being fully seated in the chamber.. Also, is your recoil spring new or could it possibly have too many rounds on it, which may be preventing it from completely shutting the slide.. I found that I had to seat the truncated cone bullets a bit deeper than the RNFP's or RN bullets.
  21. Don't you all know that Unique is supposed to be THE powder for loading everything? Yeah, I never liked something that was mediocre at everything.. but it seems that some people use it for EVERYTHING including low velocity rifle ammo.. It is generally a middle of the road powder for shotshell and pistol use.. and unless you run it at the top of it's pressure level in pistol, it can be a little sooty/dirty.
  22. Solo 1000 if you like something single based and cooler.. I know a lot of ppl like Bullseye
  23. You could do multi-gun, long gun only.. our club has about 44 pistol only matches a year, everyone is tired of pistol, so when we do multi gun, it is generally shotgun/rifle. You can run AR's and modern shotguns against the lever/pump/side by side crowd.. if the pistol is the limiting factor, then don't use it.. Remember, model 92's in 38 and 44/45 hold 8-10 rounds per tube.. They don't generally reload, you can require them to shoot 1 shot per paper for every 2 you'd use in an AR.. there are creative ways to make it work out.
  24. My main reason for casting was to make up a bullet that no one offered for a decent price. I now have the lead and a source or two locally to make it worth it.. I have little time lately but I only need wait a bit and time seems to find me. I turned at least one other person on to how easy and cost effective it is.. not to mention that I don't have to wait for someone else to do a "run" on that particular bullet, I just need make some time and cast what I need.. or just keep casting and make up a good amount for myself.. You seem to have the lead, I say go for it. It's amazing how many bullets you can make with a Lee 4-20 pot and a 6 cavity Lee Mold.
  25. Since I'm a match and range volunteer... well, I don't usually have to even pay for club matches. I've put in enough time that I'm part of the furniture..
