shred
Say I'm going to the Steel Challenge.. From reading the quickie guide to CA laws, I can bring my evil Dawson Assault Weapon since I'm a tourist and therefore to be trusted with such things, but it's not obviously clear on mags. Can I bring hicaps or do I need to scrounge up some 10 rounders? Don't ask, don't tell?

shred
Flying most likely. Probably into Burbank.
Ironman
I think that I would be concerned bringing in high cap mags due to the high level of security in flights and seeing that you are coming from a foreign territory into a state where movie stars and porn kings run for governor. Some call us crazy… sometimes I wonder if they are right. Jim
Shooter Grrl
Last time I asked, you can bring your own magazines in with you, and you can take your own magazines home with you. Don't borrow any when you're here! This information is at least 3 years old though
rhino
Can I bring hicaps or do I need to scrounge up some 10 rounders? Don't ask, don't tell? According to the law, you're going to have bring 10rd mags.
ErikW
From a practical standpoint, nobody will ever know.
Ironman
Hi Shred, I asked Taran tonite if you would have any problems and he said that he has not had a problem even when he went to New York which is has even more crazy gun laws than Kalif. Good Luck! Jim
Nolan
Just don't bring any nuts or fruits, we have too many as it is and most of them are on the ballot for the recall election. Bring your double stack mags, just don't sell them here.
gm iprod
So if I read this right, you can enter the 6th largest economy in the world but you can't actually add to the economy I always felt that Kalifornia was a little strange, but after visiting for a day, I am bloody certain!!! Chuck D
All you need to remember about coming to New York with a gun is you CAN'T come here with one unless your attending a match (all IPSC/USPSA matches are sanctioned/approved by the NRA...THAT'S THE KEY ). You CAN'T carry concealed and the gun must be in a locked case w/a trigger lock installed. That can't be much more difficult than California... warpspeed
ChuckD, The guns are not a problem. You can bring your AR if you like, just no hi caps to feed it with.
Loves2Shoot
If mag capacity is an issue to you (I don't expect anyone will load it up to see how many rounds it will hold) but you could always put a block of wood in the mag to prevent more than 10 rounds from being loaded (ie. shotgun 3 round plug)
Chuck D
Well, keeping in mind that its a mag cap problem...thank goodness that they make 10 round only mags. At least fellow NY'ers are not alone in "jumping thru hoops".

diehli
Don't worry about the mags... period. Bring 'em. No one is going to call you on it unless you attempt to sell them. The AR shouldn't be a problem, either, as you're "just passing through." If you REALLY want to limit them to 10 rounders, you can buy and insert the 10-round limiters that Arredondo manufactures: They're all the way down at the bottom here: http://www.arredondoaccessories.com/A_mag.cfm
warpspeed
Unless you are a lawyer, I do not think that you should be giving legal advice.
Scooter
Don't worry about the mags, just don't sell, give, or lend them to anyone. We get shooters from Reno that come to Sacramento all the time with no problems. It's legal to own them, you just can't transfer them to anyone else. warpspeed
A similar question to this was submitted to the CA DOJ. It had to do with out of state competitors wanting to come here with an AR-15 to compete. DOJ said that it would be OK to bring the AR as long as they could prove they were here for a match and had some document saying so. However, the DOJ said NO WAY NO HOW to bringing in hicap mags for the AR to use; 10 rounders only. I think the request was made by the USPSA, not just Joe Citizen. diehli
Since warpspeed's all up in a tizzy, I have to ask... are YOU a lawyer? Don't start quoting stuff that you have no way of proving. I have several standard capacity magazines. Six for a Glock 23, 4 for a Glock 22/35, and 5 for an STI... I also have a dozen 30-round mags for an AR. I have yet to be questioned by an officer of an law enforcement agency as to whether the magazines were in CA prior to the ban. I've also never been asked for ID when shooting a match. Since you seem to know so damn much, Mr. speed, why don't you call the CA DOJ Firearms Division at 916/227-3703?

warpspeed
No, I'm not a lawyer. But I have consulted with one when it comes to firearms issues in the State of California, such as this one. As far being able to prove anything, my source of info on the request to DOJ was Mike Voigt, USPSA President. My findings and opinions: It is not illegal to have hicaps in CA. The DOJ has said that they have no intention on reseraching everyone they find. Unless of course they find it while investigating a crime. At that point you may need to explain. However, the DOJ was very clear that bringing a hi-cap mag here is a violation of CA law. Why won't anyone ship one to you if you order it online? Because it is against the law and they do not want to go to jail. Why do they say "not for sale in CA" in their ads in Shotgun News? Becaue if they don't print the disclaimer, they are violating CA law by "offering for sale". Get it? Chance are you will not be seached/caught but if you are, is the penalty worth it? If you became a CA resident after the ban and have them in CA, you obviously violated the law. There is no way out of it. Prepare to be penalized. Once again , is it worth it? Stop and think for a minute, have we had a major USPSA/IPSC match here in CA in the last couple of years? Nationals? Area 2 - always in AZ right? Why? It is not for lack of ranges that is for sure. Steel Challenge is 10 round friendly so that is about the only one you will find. Perhaps we can get the Factory Gun Nationals at some point. But that is just my opinion, I could be wrong
