What has been your worst car?

I've only had three cars to date:

1989 Honda Civic Si (bought new and still have)

2002 Honda Civic Si (bought new. traded in for...)

2003 Honda Element EX (still have)

If I had to choose the worse one is the '89 Honda Civic Si. It's the only car I've owned long enough for wear and tear to have a negative impact on its reliability. I've had to replace three axles (probably because of the all the ruts and rough dirt roads of the shooting ranges I frequent), had to change something in the fuel system (right now can't recall its name), the front drive seat is in tatters, the steering wheel needs to be replaced, the radio needs to be replaced, the paint looks like crap and the AC doesn't blow cold air anymore.

But I still have it. I have "dreams" of fixing it up and using it to kill cones at Auto Cross events.

Related to the 'First Car' thread and seeing some of the issues people had with them.....

Edited my new post since it was a repeat....

Thankfully the camaro was put out of my misery when a lady in a 68 coupe deville hit me almost head-on. The collision broke her headlight and dented her quarter-panel. Most of my front end departed the vehicle.

Mine was a 78 - 79 CJ5 it was a rust bucket. But it made it through every trail that is in the area at that time.

If some one was sitting in the back and it was raining they would get soaked it was not because of the soft top it was from raod spray that would come in through the floor. The map compartment was gone in the floor board of the passengers side.

But man I miss that jeep.

It had a 6" suspension 3" body lift it sat on 40" DC Fun Country tires with Alcoa rims. It was a beast and yes only got about 3-4 miles per gallon.

Once at the beach had a guy on a crotch rocket burn his one little wheel.

We hopped out locked the hubs rolled forward about 10 feet dropped the clutch and smoked all 4.

Came to a stop and looked over at him and said when you can do that come back and see me. :surprise:

My first, and a heap it was, was a 87 Ford Ranger XL. It was sold to me by a guy at Fiesta Ford who worked in the body shop. It was a conglomeration of three different vehicles. (Two trucks and a Bronco II) The throttle position sensor on the 2.9L V-6 would burn out with regularity making the truck lurch and buck until it warmed up even on the hottest days. The guy had put one of the earliest pre-runner suspensions on it and that truck had SWAY! Once while driving on the freeway at 70MPH, the gear shifter came off in my hands! It was so light with such big tires, that on several occasions I hydroplaned accross several lanes of busy freeway traffic during rainy rush hour. Hard use made it impossible to align, so I had to constantly buy tires. 31x11.5 are not cheap! I used to smog it with this little shop in Indio, that would make sure it passed for $40.00 and a 12 pack of Natural Ice. You had to sit and shoot the bull with the guy too, but hey it ALWAYS PASSED! ;)

"Bout the only thing good about that truck was that it lasted for a long time, and it would get airborn without doing any real damage out in the dunes that used to be everywhere around here. (Now ALL HOUSES) It was the go to stay out all weekend in the boonies truck for me and my friends. We used to fill the bed with kegs, cans and ice, and drive up Santa Rosa Mountain on Friday night, and not come back 'til Monday or Tuesday morning.

I sold that thing runing on 4 cylinders for $500.00 cash to a guy in Mexicali. I think I got the better end of the deal, and so did he.

Still miss that POS. But it sure took alot of my hard earned cash to keep running.

Post update. The Dodge van is gone. Traded in on a 2010 Toyota Tundra. Sold off the Cavalier. The driveway is currently POS free. First time in decades.

There were holes in the floor boards and I felt like Fred Flintstone sometimes when I would stop the thing. I had to start it with a set of toggle switches with the ignition switch where it should be and the start switch hidden in the ashtray where the lighter should be. I had to slam the driver's door 3 times to get it to close and the heat didn't work at all. Just made noise to distract me from the bitter Alaskan cold.

I had a late 70s LUV for a while, too. It had different sized wheels and tires on the front end, rusted out portions of the bed had been replaced with plywood, and the wiring harness for the back lights and fuel pump had broken, so there was a bundle of wires and duct tape running through the cab. Tough little truck, though.

1992 Ford Taurus Wagon " Motor Trend car of the year" or something like that. I owned it for three years and this is the list as best I remember.

2 AC pumps

3 alternators

3 complete sets of disc brake rotors(4 wheel disc)

2 starters(the last starter got stuck and would not shut off until it burned up)

1 set of motor mounts(liquid filled bushings leaked)

All was under warranty.

But when the warranty was up and the tranny wanted to stick in either low gear or overdrive on random occasions I got rid of it and have owned nothing but Toyotas ever since.

1975 Opel, white and rust, this car would break down at least 3-4 times a week but I allways seemed to be able to get her going again. My friends used to call me MacGyver, I would have extra fuses and wiring and lots of cans of oil with me at all times.

Wasn't mine but my friend's in high school.

He just moved to NJ from Ca. so he had his license at 16 and was king with us. We had to wait till we were 17.

He bought a 63-64 Corvair for $25. We came to realize he paid 2 to 3 times what the car was worth.

It had no 1st or reverse so we had to get out and push the car in and out of parking spaces.

Smoked constantly and used more oil than gas. BUT.... we had wheels!!!

I had a 1978 Dodge Ram Charger, 4WD with a 360 engine in it. I loved those when I was a kid, and I was able to find one that ran for $750 in the winter of 1996 (the "winter" part is critical). The heater didn't work and I lived in Minnesota, so I put in a 12v electric heater and bundled up when I wanted to play. Then came spring and with it came the smell. The warmer it got the worse the stench became. Apparently something had died inside the ductworks and that is why the truck was so cheap. I tried and tried to fumigate it and clean out the ducts- to no avail.

I had it towed to the junkyard and got $75 for it. The guy working started asking me questions. "Does it run?"- yep. "Does it move under it's own power?"- yep, "Are the tranny/ brakes/ differentials sound?"- yep.... "Why are you selling it to us then?"- Hop in and take it around the block. He was in it for less than 20 seconds before he got out gagging.

If I was a less honest person (like the dickhead that sold it to me), I would have waited until the next winter and got my money back... <_<

eeesh... I had an 83 ramcharger we called 'the war wagon'. It was great. Unstoppable. I drove it through the dunes outside Vegas (not the casino). We had it throught the woods, swamps, and snow in NJ. Even through a pond/giant 3ft deep flooded construction zone. I loved that beast!!!

Many people thought the Ford Pinto was a POS (and maybe it was for them, I dunno) but I had one when I moved to Alaska and it got me thru 2½ years of unique weather and slippery roads and telephone poles that got in my way--but I never had any trouble with it. :) I just put four good studded tires on it come wintertime and went about my business. For some reason MY pinto was not a POS.

Cultural Note: And they say you're not really an Alaskan until you have an "Alaskan Car"--that is, one that's bumped, dented or otherwise crushed (and duct-taped) somewhere due to an encounter with road ice while careening helplessly into some solid object... or two. My Pinto took a while to turn into an "Alaskan Car" but it did so eventually (right in my own back yard, essentially) and thusly I was initiated. :lol:

1983 blue Renault Alliance (via AMC)

She was my first, so I still loved her, but Man did she have issues! Mind you, I got her in 1995, so she had 85k and 12 years on her. Stick shift (good), no radio, no right side mirror, no 5th gear (max speed 45mph), no reverse gear (get to school early so you can get a "pull-through" spot", a grey front bumper, and the fabric on the roof sagged onto your head. Good times....good times...

On the upside, every car that I've had since has seemed like a real dream!

Before my wife and I got married we bought a (New) 79 Ford mustang in late 79 . What a piece of crap. At 11,000 miles the cam broke. Local Dealer would not fix it under warranty. Then at 24,000 miles it tossed a rod and ruined the block. I will never buy another Ford . Ever!

1996 Ford Mustang GT. A/C went out, headlight knob was poorly designed and pulled off frequently, cheap plastic interior scratched easily, power adjustable seat brackets broke and required rewelding, parking brake cable snapped, handling sucked, brakes sucked, and it broke a rear swaybar (and I didn't exactly drive it like a madman either).

I bought it because I wanted to give the whole V8 thing a try...what a P.O.S. it turned out to be.

1962ish (different parts from different years) VW Bug. In its prime the engine made 34 HP. I think my dad's riding mower had more power by the time I adopted this disaster. Couldn't keep rear axle bearings in it for more than 4 months. I carried an ice scraper so I could scrape the ice off the inside of the windshield as I drove it in the winter. Half the floorboards were replaced with plywood. One headlight pointed straight, the other at the moon.

1967 step side Chevy pickup. It had been my Grandfathers farm truck, he had took a blow torch to wheel wells in the rear so he could put on wider tires so he could mount a sprayer in the back. Minnesota 1987.

He gave it to me for my 16th birthday. I had to re-wire it to make it street legal, and with my limited electronics (at the time) I managed to get everything working, but when I hit my brakes, the front turn signals came on, it turned into my trademark entrance to the "bon-fire"

This thing had built in ventilation, back then I was still "chewing" and I could spit at the floor and hit the highway. It was just plain wierd when I sraped enough dough to put in a digital FM/cassette radio in it.

The first car I actually bought was a 1969 Plymouth Satellite. Paid $110 at a farm auction, at one time this thing had been a dark blue, but the sun had faded the paint and the vinyl flower top to a light baby blue. It had a small decal that said "modtop" on it and that is what we called it.

I drove it for a year before the 20 year old 318 gave it up.

One of my ex's had to have a diesel VW Rabbit. I don't know how much horsepower that thing had but my guess is around 12. It would not go up a gentle slope with the AC on. What a POS.

The Impala we rented in Vegas is the biggest turd I've driven since that VW.

87, Chevy S10 4 cylinder. 2.5 liter. The worse motor GM ever built. Motor would ping at any speed & every gear.

Fought with dealer for months & they finally replaced the head. Motor stopped pinging for 20,000 miles then started again. Found a new home after that.

I made a great living working on those at the dealership back in the 90's !!!!!!!!!
