Who is shooting a Ruger GP or Super GP100

Interesting, thanks for the reply... Using a Ruger revolver seems to be like swimming against the current?. I had a very early S&W 929, never was a favorite. Soooo, here I am, lost in Ruger land.... I have someone at Ruger trying to open the gate and set one free...

Jake Martens is getting a review gun for some upcoming Front Sight issue, I heard at Nationals. I can't imagine Ruger would send one out and generate press without having more of the guns ready to go, but then again, maybe that's exactly what they're going to do. Competitors aren't exactly the biggest market—less than 1% of Super GP100s built show up regularly in competition.

That's for sure!

I have a GP100 in .357 Mag that I use for ICORE Classic and a Match Champion 10mm that I use for L6. I'm often the only Ruger shooter at the matches. Since I'm in New England, Paul Pluff occasionally shows up and he shoots a GP100.

Perhaps' there is a glimmer of hope for more?... MAYBE, I could also do a review?.. I'd even shoot it upside down ala Jerry Miculek...

I think all 8 shots are scarce as hen’s teeth right now. My mistake is getting my wife into shooting ICORE and letting her use my 627. Having a hard time finding anything at all to replace. Occasionally something pops on GB for scalper’s pricing. Oh well, Classic is a nice challenge.

I have two Ruger GP100s (six shots), one a 4.2-inch for IDPA and a 6-inch for ICORE Classic. Within those two organizations they have put a lot of trophies in my "I Love Me" wall. Both have trigger jobs with Wilson or Wolfe spring kits that produce a 7.50 DA trigger pull. Rugers are built like tanks and keep going like the Energizer Bunny. I did have to send one  (the 4.2) back to Ruger after 35,000 rounds of 125 PF (+P) required by IDPA until just a few years ago, and they got it fixed quickly. Ruger's customer service is second to none. I even managed to make B Class in Steel Challenge with the six-inch, even though 6 rounds isn't a competitive gun in ISR. I have played with the 8 shot Super, and it would be a much better choice in Steel, although I'm not so certain whether going Limited in ICORE is a better bet than six-shot Classic. They way most of the matches I've shot are set up, and 8-shot will leave a fair number of live rounds on the ground. That's my 2c and worth every penny you paid for it.

I have a super GP100 in 9mm, picked it up when they first came out and shot a few USPSA and steel challenge matches with it for fun until I decided to get serious with my limited gun. I’ve never tried any of the 8 shot smiths but I enjoy the ruger it runs fine.

do people feel there is a competitive disadvantage with rugers in ICORE ? cylinder release maybe ? As mentioned you just dont see many.. Thinking of a 10mm  as I have buckets of loaded 40 . Limited Six gun maybe..
I do not super tune my Smith guns, I keep them heavy enough so they pretty much shoot any normal ammo.

Compared to a well tuned smith (5.5 lb trigger pull & less notchy) there is a significant disadvantage for me. A really dialed in revolver guy could likely overcome the trigger with training but for me it is a problem.

Revolvers are all I have ever shot for the last 40 years, started with Ruger Blackhawks, then in 1989 moved on to the GP100's, so they are second nature to me, but if I was starting fresh again (and Young) I would use a Smith.

I think Ruger makes a fine firearm. Everything has it's plus and minus points, though. In my view, the Ruger is built like a tank and will last forever. Tanks are kind of heavy and cumbersome to drive, compared to a lighter, more nimble vehicle. Also, S&W has the most tunable lockworks currently available. You can't get a better DA out of any other brand, including Korth and Manhurin. Once you add up the easier handling and the better DA, you normally end up getting a Smith for competition.

Sometimes the madness hits me and I shoot an IPSC match using a stock 4.2" GP100. That is a serious disadvantage against 8-shooters.

I have handled a GP100 that was cut for moonclips and the trigger (SA and DA) was done by a gunsmith who knows revolvers. That one was nice.

The cylinder release is highly accessible for the right hand thumb. You just press it instead of pushing it. Easy and fast but might take some getting used to for a diehard S&W guy or girl.

Well Seth came up from Wichita and had 2 8 shot rugers, one with a dot and one without.

He won our local ICORE Match and shot 4 classifiers each, pretty sure A in Limited and B in Open.

He handled them well, had good reloads BUT his bullets were tumbling badly.  He said he was using .357 coated bullets because the throats were tight on Rugers?  I told him to try .358's, will have to check with him on it to see if he gets it solved.

I have six GP100's from 1989 to 2020, probably over 125,000 rounds easy, never had a bullet tumble.  I do size all my bullets to .358, but have shot ones sized to .357 and .359.

He using 160's at minor ?  I know alot of Smith and Wesson shooters run them..
Might be as simple as dropping to 147's and getting velocity up..  Like some 9mm's wont stabilize 147's at low velocity.
I thought mismatched throats and barrels were a 45 thing

Small sample size but a buddy and I are both shooting GP100s (6 shots, shooting 38s and for me a 10mm shooting 40S&W too) in IDPA all season this year.
He has been Ruger since he started with revolver last year.  He is using a well-polished up regular GP100 with reloads and I am using a Match Champion with 38 and a 10mm running 40S&W running factory ammo.  I used S&W last year and wanted to give Rugers a fair shake this year to see what I prefer.
Buddy and I are having a great time with Rugers.  Once we got some sticky case issues cleared up with the Rugers, they have run like champs through several majors and a ton of locals so far.
Our limited observations - yours may vary:
- The Rugers seem to tolerate being dirty better than the S&W guns I have shot in competition (625, 686 SSR).
 - Empty 38 cases dropping free seem to be a challenge in the GP100s until you get the polishing right in the chambers.

 - The triggers on the GP100s have a much longer pull than the S&Ws
 - The trigger pull on the GP100s smooth out really well - Jay's video is a gospel on doing it.
 - Cylinder release was hard to adjust to for me at first but has become very intuitive and now that my main 38 is worn in, it is smooth to release the cylinder with no sticking.  My backup and the 10mm are both sticky to release the cylinder but will loosen with use I feel.

 - Personally, I feel a little more confident in the Rugers because of issues I had in the past with S&W screws loosening and light primer strikes.

All that being said - head-to-head, if I am shooting my 686 SSR - I am more accurate, faster on splits, and faster on reloads (not sure why).  I have more confidence while shooting the Rugers though.
I have and really like my 929 but if a Super GP100 in 9mm showed for a reasonable price, I would snag it in a heartbeat.

Thanks! I have some addenda written down, but need to find time to record them (and clear the workbench off first, etc. etc.).

I haven't gotten a Ruger to S&W weight, but notchiness is a hammer dog fit issue 99% of the time, and easily fixed with a couple of fresh ones off of Numrich to account for inevitably getting it wrong the first few times, or when you're out of practice (ask me how I know).

The Ruger cylinder release is one place where I would say Team Red is indisputably better, once you put the Hogue paddle in. I'm working on a similar part that fits the IDPA rules, but again, need to find time for some revisions.
