2alpha Posted August 24, 2011 Share Posted August 24, 2011 The cannon ball drop thing was the best challenge so far IMO. You could speed it up a little and really make it hairy. Cliff did a great job, you could see he was focused. I don't think they should be so hard on the shotgun specialist, speed shooting slugs thru peep sights is not really a shotgun skill, more like shooting a rifle. Also looked like front cocking serrations and slide lightening cuts were added. Obviously not USPSA Production legal with those additional serrations and slide cuts. I think that the weapon used in the eliminations should be more related to the team challenge though. A different challenge but the same or similar platform. They shot a shotgun in the team challenge, people got voted based on their performance with the shotgun, they should have to go though the elimination with a shotgun. Maybe change it up to poppers and flipper clays with a double barrel or something but I think if you got voted in because you didn't shoot well with a weapon you should have to use that type of weapon to stay alive. I knew it was some kind of race gun and not a stock G34 which I suspect contributed to Drew's problems. No slight to defensive pistol instructors intended, but they are not going to be able to deal with a competition trigger as well as a competition shooter can. But it's also worth noting that those looked to be some rather small plates to be shooting in rapid succession which likely also didn't help Drew. What distance was that? Lastly, the red teams shotgun expert was quick to point out that he didn't do any worse than anyone else on the team. Well, sorry guy, you're the expert and you're expected to do BETTER than everyone else on your team. HE should have been the first one into the elimination challenge. P.S. I noticed that the "camp counselor" cleaned everyones clocks - 5 out of 5 on his first at bat! That's a guy to watch out for. It looked like the same kind of thing in the shotgun challenge - folks just weren't in a competition mindset or weren't used to being under pressure. Not really sure. Seems like the blue team's approach with Iron Mike Hughes was a winning approach. If you are used to a moderately heavy trigger with a lot of takeup and are given a light trigger with no takeup, you're likely have the gun go off when you are not suspecting it. IOW, what's enough pressure on a stock gun to prep the trigger will fire a competition trigger. Agreed that this was not the guy's only issue - trying to shoot cross eye dominant the way he was really killed him, but that was not a Glock he was shooting, it was a race gun and that's a totally different beast or it would not cost as much as it does. It seemed that during the practice session he was having problems even aiming the pistol properly. Some of that might be due to TV editing (not implying anything nefarious) because I doubt a guy is going to show up and claim to be a firearms instructor, and not know how to shoot a pistol properly even if you are cross eye dom. However if you are a Glock shooter and all you do is instruct people how to shoot box stock Glocks, someone hands you a Glock with no take up no over travel and less then 2.5# trigger, its going to mess you up. Two things happened Cliff showed why he is a Champion. The other guy got flustered and his fundamentals went out the window. Hope Cliff goes on to win the whole shooting match! Was it canting the gun to the left? I don't see a problem shooting cross eye dominant, been doing it over 40 years. I don't think it is strange not mentioning the total make up of the gun. Most everybody has heard of the Glock, not so many of the name mentioned, and most of them would not care or know the difference. Oh and as a note....Go Cliffy... I'm not ashamed to say that I'm not impressed with Michael at all...the red head. Lot's of talk, with nothing demonstrated thus far to back up his drivel. Mr. B Posted August 24, 2011 Share Posted August 24, 2011 (edited) I like how it was the "cross eye dominance" that made the guy shoot low right, instead of grip/trigger squeeze that causes every other left handed shooter to shoot low right with a Glock when they first use it. (Much like every right handed shooter shoots low left at the start) That was an awesome contraption they devised. I want one!! The shotgun shooter should have manned up and at least admitted he shot badly, even if he didn't volunteer to go to elimination. Drew lost that competition by shooting too fast. He even learned that in practice, his best shots were when he slowed down. He got to the line and after getting behind he started just pulling the trigger trying to make up time by missing a lot. Everytime somebody on that show states that they should have no problem winning the shootoff because the firearm, format or whatever suits them they loose.
