THE Video!
Frank34 replied to Sarge's topic in Miscellaneous Topics That Do Not Fit in Any Other Forum
I'm glad that no one was injured during this incident. USPSA is a very safe sport and has effective safeguards built into the stage procedures. This was just a mistake that happened and we all need to learn from this when we are acting as the RO. As far as this video being out to the public, it happened. We all need to own it and be good ambassadors of USPSA when explaining this incident. -
DW has a decent law enforcement program. I'm carrying a CCO for off duty and just bought a Specialist for work to replace my Kimber. Contact CZ direct for individual officer pricing.

You can't go wrong with a Dawson CRP Edge. My only concern about buying a used custom built gun is how many rounds have been through it. Nothing is worse than having a gun that becomes unreliable during matches. A new gun, after it's tuned should provide years of service. I am the proud owner of a CRP Edge, could have bought a custom but used the extra money to invest in my gear and practice ammo.

Dawson has a demo Trojan 45 on their home page for $989. Cheap way to get a Trojan.

(Electronic) Leight, Peltor, or something else?

I just bought a pair of Etymotic GSP15 ear plugs. I use them with the foam covers and they have a 25 DB rating. They are with looking at. Also if you qualify for Promotive discount you could save a lot on them -
Just saw that they have this in stock.

Changing Powders in my .40 S&W load after 25,000 Rounds
Frank34 replied to Jim Rusert's topic in 10mm/40 Caliber
I've had good luck with 231 in major and minor with 180 Xtreme plated bullets. -
Buy the tubes, then get some Dawson base pads and Grams springs and followers and put them together yourself. Not cheap but a good set up. Oh yeah cheap and STI don't go together.

The blue bullets work pretty well in 40. They also use less powder charge than plated.

NRA is awesome but their marketing is way too aggressive towards their members.

If you don't want to wait for STI then definitely talk to Virgil Tripp. After having two gunsmiths work on my 40 I sent it to Tripp and now it runs perfect. The guy is a genius.

Dan Wesson pistols are top quality production guns. They also have great customer service.

Very good value for the price. Look into a Milt Sparks summer special IWB holster.

Replacing fixed sights on a Kimber 1911 w/adjustable sights
Frank34 replied to Postal Bob's topic in 1911-style Pistols
Dawson is the way to go if you want it done right. Well worth sending it out and getting it done right without beating your slide to death. -
The only problem I ever had was a broken extractor. Replaced it with an AFTEC.

My STI has been used a lot out of a dusty kydex holster and the worst thing that happens to the finish is that it gets a little shiny. Hard chrome is very durable. I can't think of anything harder.

My Dawson CRP edge runs factory length ammo with no problems.
-
Go with anything STI over Para. I had to send my STI single stack to Tripp to get it to run with factory length ammo but the fit, finish, and feel of the gun is just as good as most custom builds.

Wanting to get into 1911 platform. Suggestions?
Frank34 replied to Blankenhole's topic in 1911-style Pistols
Can't go wrong with STI. -
I have the USPSA Single Stack and was considering it or a Trojan. I don't think I would get any other 1911 at this point than a STI. I prefer the checkering on the front strap, the tri topped slide, the ambi safety, and the grips. The USPSA is more money than the Trojan but I felt that it was a good deal for me since I preferred the looks of the gun and the upgrades that I mentioned. Does it shoot better than a Trojan, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference but I am really happy with my purchase.

Why tungsten guide rods break (brittle)?
Frank34 replied to Kimbertarget's topic in 1911-style Pistols
I just weighed my STI single stack with a tungsten guide rod and it came out to 42 ounces with an empty magazine. So for USPSA you could be ok. Guide rods need to be fit if you don't you may have problems. That's why some guys run them forever and others break them once a season. -
How many pros carry 2011 style guns for CCW
Frank34 replied to Alaskapopo's topic in 1911-style Pistols
A 2011 seems pretty wide for a carry gun, I compete with a STI Edge and carry a single stack 1911 for everyday use. I think they both point the same anyway. -
The Tripps work just fine and the base pad does not extend too far. Here's why I recommend them. I recently got a STI USPSA single stack 40. I couldn't get it to run to I bought some Tripp 40 magazines since I thought I had a magazine problem, anyway I needed additional magazines to shoot single stack. The gun still wouldn't run so I called Virgil Tripp. I wanted to run factory length ammo since it works in my STI Edge, and Virgil told me that he could either fix the gun for me or he would tell me the "formula" to relay to my gunsmith. Well my gun now runs on factory length ammo and it is totally reliable. This is some incredible customer service.
