I started with the Lee turret, went through the progressions until it was a Pro 1000. I loaded many thousands of rounds on it. Was it trouble free, no. It has its quirks. But for the money it is a good press. Just don't expect Dillon 650 performance from it. I have a Dillon 1050 set up for 9x23 and an newly purchased, used, SDB in .45acp. I will need to load for .38Spl also. I am seriously considering acquiring another Pro 1000. It costs only slightly more than a conversion for the SDB and I would not have to change settings. I AM tempted to try the LoadMaster again. It has been more than 15 yrs since my disastrous experience. But, I KNOW I can load good ammo reliably on a Pro 1000. I do not know that about the LoadMaster.

yes, always POSITIVE affirmations. I hear shooters say 'ok, miss the no-shoot'. The subconscious mind grabs onto key words, in this case 'no-shoot'. So when you proceed your mind focuses on 'no-shoot' and sure enough, you hit it.

bigdawg, "the sand pit in Michigan", must be at Dorr. Yes, a bit sandy. You could lose a mag in that stuff. Other than locations such as the range at Dorr, MI, or Sharon, Ontario, where I lost an 8 round Devel mag back when they were new, I just wear the gun all the time. The mags I usually take off all but one.

I started shooting pistols in the early 80s. By the mid 80s I was sort of competitive. I did win 2 local matches. Since then I have continued shooting, in competitions, but I have not been competitive.

right from the start I worked at maintaining contact with the trigger. My mentor was an old time bullseye shooter. As my splits got shorter I found trouble. My best competition splits run .15-16 seconds. At the 2004 USPSA Nationals in the dark house I was cruising along at what for me was decent pace when suddenly, on the second shot at a target my gun did not fire. I immediately racked the slide and continued shooting. In retrospect I am sure I did not release the trigger. One of my shooting buddies was a middle Master and for years talked about 'feeling the reset'. I thought I was missing something because at speed I never felt the reset. I endeavored to maintain contact with the trigger; forever searching for the feel of the reset. Makes me wonder what I might have done if I was a 'slapper'.

DougR, I doubt anyone can do a trigger job that will last the life of the pistol. While durable, hammers and sears ARE consumables.

back in the 80s I shot winter IPSC matches at the Sharon Gun Club north of Toronto Canada. There were no shoveled shooter boxes. One match I shot with my left arm in a cast. NOT from falling in the snow. At another Ontario, Canada club they held a 'concealed carry' winter match. No problem with a parka on! The RO said, "I have to check you for concealed carry. Do you have a gun on?". I was wearing my full race comp gun rig!!!

I used a 1995 Dodge Grand Caravan. Then a 1998 Grand Caravan. Now a 2005 Grand Caravan. All got 23-25mgp on the highway. Plenty of room for 4 adults on a long trip, 6 for a local match.

last time I was a member of Rio Salado range (2004) IIRC, the fee was $65.00. For that you had free use of the 100/200/300 yard public range, free use of the practical ranges,( if you had your card stamped by the Practical group.) $250 plus $5 for using my own ammo. We be GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Check with the owner. I bet the range geek is trying to rip you off. Bet he looses his job.

first, LEE does not have excellent on line guides. Lee OWNERS have produced excellent on line guides. Neither Dillon or Dillon owners have on line guides since they are not needed. I have used Star presses, w & w/o case feeder, w & w/o auto index. I have owned Lee turret press, Lee Auto Index press, Lee Progressive, Lee Pro 1000 and the Loadmaster. I have also owned Dillon 300, 450,550, SDB, and 1050. I owned a Hornady Pro-Jector. I liked the Lee Pro 1000. For the money it is a fine machine. The Loadmaster was a POS. And when you trim flashing etc. you ARE modifying the press. You are not using it as produced/delivered. For the money you should not have to do such modifications. I had a catastrophic failure of the shell plate carrier. It cracked and wound up tilted such that the brass could not line up with the dies! After the success I had with the Pro 1000 I WANTED the Loadmaster to be what it was hyped to be, but it is not. The Hornady was a fine press. I sold it to a buddy who begged me to sell it to him. With the improvements I think it would be a fine choice. Each Dillon was better than the prior one. The 550 I think is excellent for rifle. I prefer 5 stations for pistol but then I went ahead and bought a used SDB to load .45acp on. It was a bargain, only $260. Not 5 stations but for the price I could not pass it up. The RL1050 has been around for a long time. I bought it sometime in the later 1980s. $750 IIRC. Dillon has rebuilt it once, free of charge. The 1050s do not have the NO BS Guarantee since they are considered commercial machines, but they completely refurbished mine to new condition for free. Actually they refurbished two RL1050s for me. I bought a worn out 1050 in .38 Special. It WAS used by a commercial loader for many years. It was completely trashed. I was going to go to the 2001 IRC and I wanted a press in .38sp. I paid $700, took it directly to Dillon and had them work on it. A week or 2 later I got a call to pick it up. When I picked up the .38 Special 1050 I dropped off my 9x23 1050. So they rebuilt 2 "commercial" presses for no charge in one month. Now THAT is customer service! Sadly later, I was injured and off work and sold the .38sp 1050 for $950. I have loaded a bit on the 650 and am impressed by it. The only advantages that I see that the 1050s have over the 650s are: the 1050 seats primers on the down stroke and the primer pocket swager. If the Dillon RL/Super 1050 is a Cadillac, the Star Universal is a Lamborginin Countach. It is beautiful to look at, an exquisite exercise in precision machining. Also like the Countach, it is out of production and very hard to get parts for. My $0.97 worth. ($0.02 adjusted for inflation)
