  1. True. The original browning HP went away from a fixed extractor to a pivoting one for going cheaper in production. I prefer pivoting because they can be "moved" if you have an oversized reload case jam tight in the barrel. If you slip the extractor out of the way, the gun can be field stripped. My only gripe with the Para try at an external extractor is that seem to have made it too complicated and not reliable enough. Extractors are not rocket science, it's kind of bizarre they can't get it right. My other gripe is that Para makes some of the crappiest standard extractors on earth (the one in my 1640 was a cast piece of junk). hard cast steel for an extractor? Absolute idiocy.
  2. I don't disagree that cheap gun makers won't spend time fitting the guns right. Look at how the barrels are fitted in junk 1911s. In reality, the reason most off-the-rack 1911 exctractors "lose their tune" is because the steel they are made from is too hard. The extractor is designed to act as a spring, and as such, should be made from springy steel not hardened steel. If the steel is more springy, the "push back' for given amount distance of deflection is less. In a nutshell, you can allow the extractor some "pre load" and the case deflects it the rest of the amount, initial position is not so critical. Most crappy extractors steel are so hard you have to bend them with great precision to get the right tension because it is giving that tension with such a small distance of deflection. Also, hard steel "takes a set" which means it loses tension and you have to do it again. Bottom line, if the steel is so hard it generates full tension with a minute deflection, there is virtually zero system tolerance. But, there is no reason to do that. If extractors are made from the right steel, they would be very easy to fit (one bend at a jig and you're done) and would hold tension over what is the life of most shooters use of the gun. BTW, the Sprigfield XD is using a fixed extractor (with preload) very similar to the 1911 and they have had ZERO problems.
  3. My dad was stationed at Schoefield Barracks when Pearl harbor was bombed, in the army serving in an infantry company. He was one of less than 20 of the originals who were still in that company at the end of the war. Not all KIA, more were wounded and shipped out than killed. But fighting in the pacific Theater was definitely hazardous to your health.
  4. At that point, I would have said something like:Two hours with your hottest looking daughter and a six-pack of malt liquor. I am a firm believer that incredibly stupid questions deserve equally stupid answers.
  5. "Great platform to build on" = worthless crap that would need $1000 dumped into it to make it shootable.
  6. That brings up an interesting hypothesis that I ran a study on during my senior year: A vast majority of people feel more anxiety over seeing dogs and cats being injured than a human. My data showed significants in this using movie clips showing both types of violence to my subjects. The reasoning behind it is that we see an infinitely larger amount of human violence in the media (news, movies, television) but it is less commonplace to see said violence acted out on animals in the pet category. We simply are not desensitized to that type of visual and auditory input. Actually it is because animals can not mentally comprehend the reason for the violence being done to them so it is far more cruel. It's also because we have a responsibility to safeguard helpless animals since we are the top of the food chain. It is a sad commentary that there are more organizations decicated to welfare of animals than humans.... and that some people have such an easy time of rationalizing away the fact we (even in such a wealthy society) give the middle finger to such a large segment of the country's population. I think for these types of people they are able to rationalize their cruelty toward humans because they can claim that humans have the capability to "better their lot in life" and therefore, do not deserve any special consideration from social programs aimed at helping them.... unlike animals.
  7. The "power extractor" is the definitive example of fixing something that ain't broke. A good quality (properly tuned) standard 1911 extractor will last at least 10k rounds.... I have some that have run WAY longer than that.
  8. Single man then?
  9. You will love this one: on the 2003 Chevy I bought when new, the sticker prices was about $18k. So, the dealer has his "mark up" BS, destination charges, etc..... and is asking $22k. So, he asks me to make an offer and I offer him $17k.Then, he does the "negotiation" thing: takes a plain piece of paper and divides it into four squares and draws a diagonal line through each square. he explains that I write my offer in the left side of the square and he writes his on the other side. he goes first: to "come down a little" he writes $21k on his side and slides the paper to me. I write $16k on my side (1k less than I just offered him). he gets agitated and explains that in order to make the deal, we have to compromise on the price.... so he moves onto the next square and "comes down" on his offer to $20k and slides the paper over to me. I write $15k on my offer. He gets pissed off and asks me what the hell I'm doing? I told him: "Seeing how long it would take you to figure out I'm not going to let you jerk me on the price." So, eventually I paid sticker price because there was a $1500 rebate.... and when I told him I was paying cash the guy started crying that he was losing money on the car. I told him I forgot my violin....
  10. One advantage of being old and having my house paid off: during the last "dealing" I asked if they give good rates on their loan.... then after I beat the hell out of them on price and rebates for the car (and it was all set), I whipped out my checkbook and paid cash for the car. It's fun to watch a grown man cry......
  11. Most new car dealers have been forced to open an "internet sales side" where you can buy the car at their dealer online and you don't ever speak to a salesman.... and you save THOUSANDS because they are forced to compete with internet prices. The dealer won't even tell you they pffer this, but most do and if you use it you will save a ton of $$$. If the dealer doesn't, go to another dealer. When I looked at Hybrid Accords, the dealers were tacking $5k onto the alread high sticker price on the lot. The internet price from the dealer was about $1k BELOW sticker saving about $6k on the same car.
  12. last time I did the new car thing I went online and got all the details of the Chevy cavalier I wanted, then went to the dealer and said: "Find me this car and I will buy it from you for cash at sticker price." Dealer says: "Yopu have to give us $1000 deposit before we can transport a car from another dealer." ME: "I didn't tell you to transport anything, I told you to FIND the car... when you find it, and I see it exists, I'll give you the deposit. When it arrives, I'll pay the full price" DEALER: "Don't worry... we can find it..... but you have to give us $1000 deposit first." ME: "SLAM!" (door as I'm leaving) The ploy is to get the deposit and start the paperwork, then they don't find the model with what you want and try to shoe horn you into whatever crap they have on the lot.
  13. True, I probably should have started a thread on EFK Firedragon. I bought one of their 9mm conversion barrels for my Springfield XD and had problems. I sent it back and they sent me a new one that looked like it had been custom fitted to my slide it dropped in so perfectly (not sure how they did that since I didn't send them my slide). That barrel is so accurate I couldn't believe it.
  14. I don't watch much football these days, don't root for anybody. But last Sunday's "battle of the undefeated" made me look when the Patriots went against the Colts. That game was a real shootout, with enough high caliber defensive and offensive plays on both sides to make a highlight reel. patriots QB was able to get it done as the clock ran down and then the Pats defense shut the Colts down on their last series. I wonder if we just saw the preview of the next super bowl...
  15. KBOOM requires some dumb action on the user's part, namely reloading much-used .40 brass very hot to blow out the case. I don't recall any KBOOMs using new ammo, but if there were it was defective ammo. I tend to agree the Glock KBOOM is more myth than reality, or at least grossly exaggerrated.
  16. If it's any consolation, CZ's also have the dreade RSJ (random stovepipe jam) that no human on earth has ever understood to this day........ I'll shoot hundreds of rounds no problem out of my CZ-85 and then get five stovepipes in 50 rounds one time.
  17. The kind that makes gunsmiths rich fixing the damage they do.....
  18. Nice looking gun. What price did you pay, if you don't mind me asking. John I paid $675 for it. YEOWW! Out here that would be classified as stealing.....
  19. Or, send a gun to cylinder and slide first so that all other gunsmiths you do business with will seem speedy by comparison.
  20. Doing work for other people who leave angry messages because they are not as nice as you.
  21. Boy, they sure buried the Rockies good and proper. They beat them with hitting, pitching, and defense..... it was a stomping. I was no spcific fan of either team, but the Red Sox sure put on an amazing drive to the win.
  22. She's exhibiting "alpha dog" behavior which means she wants to be either leader of the pack, or #2 in the pack to you (who will be the #1). It can be dangerous if you don't make her accept a lower pack status. She will see the other pack members (your kids) as challengers to her standing. Good luck.
  23. That's why the extractor can slip the rim. Another issue: my Para's barrel looked like the grooves were cut with a chain saw and the chamber was machined with a post hole digger. If you polish the throat it MAY help with the extraction problems (it did on my Para) by making the surface smoother and giving less drag against the extracted case.
  24. There's your answer. I believe the primary advantage of the lightened striker is it allows further reducing the striker spring (hence, the trigger pull) and still retain sufficient striking energy to light the primer. If you get light strikes with the new trigger setup, maybe you would want to try the lightened striker.
  25. Thanks. They come like that. Its in the wood grips. The grips are the best I felt on a revolver so far. The trigger is perfect I thought I was going to have to do trigger work before I bought it but its really nice. Better than the 627 I tried. The 4 inch barrel is well ballanced compared to the 627. But the 627 has a 5 inch barrel and a N frame. I am real happy with it and I am glad I found one, Is that a standard production gun or from the PC?
