  1. I think you are describing what is the double-action sear, and it has to be fitted to the gun's trigger to work right. There is a delicate "hand off" that has to occur as the trigger nose initially raises the hammer when doing a DA pull (using the end of the DA sear), and later the trigger has to release the DA sear end and smoothly engage the underside of the SA sear porch (at the very bottom of the hammer) and lift it the rest of the way. If the fit is too tight, it will bind at the hand off. Too loose, and the hammer will "hesitate" in the crossover region when lifting by a DA pull. I think the Kuhnhusen shop manual covers this fitting. Problem is, the set may already be fitted to a different frame and you MIGHT have to get a new DA sear to get it to fit just right. Maybe not.
  2. To check the extractor, take the slide off and the barrel out. Hold the slide upside down and feed an empty case under the extractor rim. Turn the slide right side up and see if it holds the case. If it will hold the case in place, but slides out easily with finger pressure you're in the right ballpark. If the case falls out before you get the slide turned over all the way, it's too light. If you have to push hard to get the case out, it's too heavy. Thanks for the advice, this is the method that I have been using. I didn't know if there was another method. Thanks again Tie a lead of dental floss tightly around a spent brass case, as near to the rear groove as possible without going in it. Take the slide off, and fit the brass into it exactly where it goes when it chambers a round. Hold the slide up level and use a trigger pull gauge hooked through the end of the dental floss to pull the brass straight down out of the extractor's hold. proper tension is in the 15 - 22 ounce ballpark to pull it out.
  3. Good point: whenever a 1911 is a cranky feeder: 1) check extractor tension, then contour extractor groove lower edges to gett smooth "roll up" 2) polish feed ramp 3) polish breech face
  4. 1911's are notorious for not feeding HP's, and usually the feed ramp has to be adjusted to get them to feed right... and then they may not feed FMJ 100%. Not sure if your feed ramp has been cut?
  5. Stock spring weight for a full size 1911 shooting factory 9mm ammo is 12#. 14# will do what he said: fail to lock back because of short stroke.
  6. I agree, when I first came down with severe ear ringing, I priced on of the sound "masker" hearing aids through Kaiser and it was over $3k. The reasons they are so steep: 1) "Bikini" economics..... in some cases, the smaller you make something the more it costs. 2) "Medical" excuse: any device made for human medical needs has to be certified to high reliability and quality, so they charge more for that. 3) GOUGING: they know most of these will be paid for by insurnace providers and so they inflate the prices severely to milk that.
  7. They sure got stomped. georgia's defense owned them all night long, and the hawaii's defense didn't even show up.It was awful.
  8. Well, this is the first case I have heard of an XD trigger bar failing. I tend to think it's pretty rare. Springer has come out with a stronger trigger bar, it's about $60. It's the one that requires fitting for pre-travel and overtravel, so it's worth it to get those features. I think you have to use the Springer sear if you use their trigger bar. But, the SA factory bar will drop in without fitting. I'd be surprised if he broke another one. EDITED TO ADD: if things haven't changed, you have to pay for overnight shipping to send a gun in for work. Out here, that runs about $75. You may want to first call SA and yell at them and maybe they will send you a trigger bar under warranty to spare you the expense. It should drop right in. If they won't give it up for free, it will probably still be cheaper to buy it and install it yourself.
  9. If it's under warranty, send it to SA and make them fix it. If not, order a trigger bar from SA and drop it in.then: I would tell him to buy the Springer polished sear/spring kit and install it (drop in, no fitting required). For $80 it gives the most trigger improvement for the money.
  10. And for all of you guys who are as old as I am, I give you the best wishes of the "harley davidson" chant: "Lord..... please don't let anything else fall off." If I get through a year without anything else falling off, it's a good year!
  11. Agree, it's easy to reach in from the back with a thing screwdriver blade and force the sear down enough to clear the striker tab (done it a few times when fitting new trigger bars). Springer precision sells a VERY nice stainless trigger bar with thick pads to be filed to dial in the pre-travel and over travel. I used that along with their polished sear and came up with a really sweet trigger. If you have baic gunsmithing skills, you can fit it yourself.
  12. or try Topglock.com I think is the name of the site.
  13. The sights are not too wide for the slide, they are too wide for the SIG pusher's holder.
  14. I think Brownell's tech article section has an article on a "2.5 Pound" trigger (was it Weigand's?).Anyway, it explains how to balance the sear spring forces evenly between the sear and the trigger return. I also would not go below about 3# total pull with unfitted components.
  15. I was referring to the factory installed rear sights on my 226R and XD40: the XD is definitely wider than the SIG, and I had to file the sides of the XD sight to push it with my SIG pusher. I don't know about the widths of aftermarket sights.
  16. The XD rear sight is a bit wider than the SIG. I have a factory SIG sight pusher and I had to file the sides of the XD sight to get it to fit the SIG pusher.
  17. I got a way cool real leather Indiana Jones style hat... I am so styling now.
  18. There was no cause, unless it's just old age. No exertion, no trauma or impact, nothing.BTW, saw my opthamologist today. He looked in my eye and found a whole bunch of blood clots were what was getting in the way of me seeing out of it. Gee...imagine that. He says the body "should" absorb them eventually.... didn't say if it would be before I die, can't have everything.
  19. My dad was in Air Police for most of his career. I remember one time when I was a kid he showed us the police dogs: they had both German shperds and Dobermans. My dad pointed to the Dobermans and said: "You can't trust those suckers...... they will be nice to you for a whole month for one chance to bite you when your back is turned." So many years later, I often think auto loaders inherited that same propensity....
  20. Yeah. Funny thing, after I was getting the indifferent response, I was getting a little more pushy and kept repeating myself: TORN RETINA AND I AM BLEEDING INTO MY EYE!. My wife told me not to be a know-it-all and tell them the diagnosis.... Turns out, somebody needed to.
  21. Yikes - you mean there coverage is doctors who might feel like coming it? Since it was a nurse and an OB-GYN resident who was looking at me:yes, they would call him and ASK if he thought he needed to drive the 30 miles to see me. The onloy reason they took me seriously is because I kept telling them I had a torn retina and was bleeding: if it turned out I was right (and they did nothing) I would own their new hospital. As it was, they did what is the Kaiser legal "standard of care": screw around with the local dipstick for a while, call the big guy when they get scared, and everybody's ass is covered. BTW: the doctor is somewhat motivated to come in... they get about 50% of their regular pay just for staying "on call". But, if they come in on a weekend, they get that 50% plus the overtime rate of pay which is usual double base pay for the time they are in the hospital.
  22. Kaiser built the new hospital justr down the street from me. Now if they could just hire some forking doctors to put in it: I swear I am not making this up: the first "doctor" to look in my eyes was a OB-GYN resident... who said she didn't see anything wrong. Then she dragged in some other woman she was training.... all the time I am saying I need an opthamologist. It took about an hour before they admitted there was no opthamologist at the hospital.... but they would call one and ask him if he wanted to come in. All the time my eye was filling up.. BTW: when you bleed into your eye it does not look red, it looks grey. As my eye was going foggy it looked like grey cottage cheese was moving in. Still does mostly. Still can't believe it happened. Like watching a train wreck.
  23. The damage to the retina did not change the focus, it's still clearer than my right eye .... on a black-on-white thing that I can see through the fog and crap in the fluid. The hole in the retina is above the area of the center vision, so if they had patched it before it tore off I would have had no problems at all. Now I have what was a 20-15 vison eye filled with a ton of crap that won't move out of my sight line.
  24. Yeah, I jumped about six feet last night when I was brushing my teeth and a big, black water mocassin strted to drop down on me. Wasn't real, of course.
  25. I agree with with G-ManBart 100%. Forking idiots. I hope it works out a better than the initial prognosis, keep us posted. It's not getting any worse or better. There is huge floating garbage but it is trapped in place. It doesn't drop. The really huge pieces drop, but the black foating "snakes and cables" appear to be permanent.
