  1. Good point on the costs, but don't forget- the best bet is to get to know some others who reload and when anyone is putting in an order they check around. Last order I made, 3 of us ordered powder and primers. I bought the majority so paid more of the shipping costs (hazmat and shipping was about $53) but it still only came out to $27 since we pooled the order. Sometimes can be the same with bullets. For 55grn plinking 223 bullets it would have been $125 per 1000 (12.5 cents/round), instead ordered a case with one other guy for $280 per 3500 (8 cents/round). This really works best once you have settled on a couple of loads/powders and can buy the powder in larger quantities, then online is the way to go. Back to this thread, I have been reloading for pistol (40 S&W only the past few years) on a SDB since 1993. It has worked great for pistol and since I compete with 40 only works fine for me. I need to start loading for my AR due to more 3-gun competition and practice but could not drop the money on a new Dillon so went with the Lee Classic Turret. Just received it and am going to get it set up today. I figure it will work for some time to load the longer range (69 to 77 grn 223) ammo and some 55grn for now and if needed I can upgrade later. Even then, the turret press will work for case prep on the rifle cases and can for resizing the 40 cases for the BarSto barrel in my limited gun (have been buying roll sized cases for matches with that gun).
  2. Watching the open and limited shooters at the ProAm was a blast. They are not used to 10 round mags and the looks of surprise that they were out of ammo was funny. Making it worse was that most of those guns did not hold open after last shot and the courses were all steel and not 8 round neut. so all were hitting slide lock more often, even found myself using weak hand thumb a few times. What was most odd to see was how often the pros in open were racking the slide after a reload and ejecting a live round. I was helping set steel for their open match so I saw all 8 stages and saw it done quite often. Edited for spelling, not used to typing on this Ipad!
  3. Yep, here is a bit about it http://www.army.mil/article/75623/Benning_hosts_first_Collegiate_Shooting_Championships/ While it may not benefit us personally in 3 gun, it is good to see that the Army has not taken a hands off approach to civilian shooting as some may have thought. Like everything else, the pending cuts will mean that the Army has to target the right groups for recruitment. Looks to me like they are on the right track and have plans to really make it THE competition for juniors and college shooters. Glad to see it.
  4. I took over a year and a half ago (had no idea that when I started this game the former MD apparently had me tagged to take over as he got me involved in stage setup and then some design pretty quickly). One thing I did not see above that helps me is to attend a 2nd match each month at another club. One that you shoot but are not in charge of anything other than the last minute help with setup or being RO/scorekeeper part of the time for your squad. As was said, my shooting at our own matches is not on par with the norm. Having another match to attend each month helps a lot.
  5. I do not think that was the issue so much as what they felt was the return on the investment of a lot of time and money. I think they just hosted the largest collegiate match ever and really did it up BIG. Of course, that is the target audience rather than a bunch of is who have either already done our time (or are beyond that point . New command, changes in goals and who knows someday?
  6. What??? Is that seriously what they did? No, your limited class was based on your highest of eitherr prod, limited or IDPA equiv. If you did not have an open classif then they used your limited, not one lower.
  7. If next year's Florida Open is anything like this year, be ready for swingers! And not just your everyday full size ones either. This year most of the swingers were partial Classic targets and often there were 2 separate ones on the swinger I was still giving the swingers more attention than I should though, costs me elsewhere. On 2 stages I got the hits on the swinger and mikes on nearby open stationary targets. When tracking, do you continue to track the target when it goes behind a barrel/wall/NS/etc?
  8. For me I am finding the opposite. I have shot Production pretty much exclusively since starting about 2 1/2 years ago, Most of that time has been with a Glock 35. My reloads have definitely become MUCH faster and consistent. To the point where a couple of times people who I have shot with from time to time over that time (larger matches, etc.) have commented. The last few months I have switched over to a Limited Glock 35 that includes a magwell. I feel like a rookie again with fumbled reloads! When reloading with mags with a Dawson extended base I am Ok but the different length and feel do slow me down slightly. When reloading with normal 15 rounders, the magwell makes it important to really seat the mag right since it is flush with the well. Bit me last match when my plan fell apart and I needed and extra reload, one shot and mag in the dust. Generally like to train as am going to compete, that is why I am using the Limited gun with minor ammo since it is 3gun season.
  9. Have not heard REMF in a loooong time. Us combat arms guys called all the support troops REMFs. Rear Echelon Mother F*****rs. Dead on Sarge, if people keep calling them REMFs I won't get through a post! Agree about the rules being required at the Level 1 as well. One of few things that I just cannot do at ours is painting between every shooter. Just no way to do it and clear the range in time for club members at the range we use. That sets up the situation where any hit on the steel leaves it up to the shooter to decide to shoot again, leave it or leave it and call for calibration after finishing the course of fire. I do have calibration ammo for those times, but rarely happens as most shoot again. Also, reshoots were something the RO class really did a good job pointing out. In most cases there is no "do you want a reshoot", it is either reshoot or zero the stage. I am just going by memory, but I believe the only time a shooter gets to decide about a reshoot (other than deciding to call for calibration on a popper) is due to interference. The shooter has to decide before seeing the time or score- but then it is their decision. The rest REQUIRE a reshoot.
  10. Yep, looking forward to the match in less than 2 weeks! Hope Phil was able to order that 75 degree weather like last year And nope no changes needed, I love the match as is, thank you! Noticed drop dead fred 2 appears to have polish plate racks instead of stars this year. Anyone have tips or videos they suggest for someone who has never shot one before?
  11. Normally shoot production but have been shooting limited minor the past few months since the big USPSA matches in this area are done an d the 3 gun matches and ProAm are coming up. Need to get out of the habit of reloading every time I move!
  12. I wil be tapering the foreend and plan to grind some of the metal at the mag tube since the shell catch is pretty far in the tube. Hope to get it done next week. Used load two sat for first time in a match with minimal practice. Worked great when I remembered to flip the gun! Otherwise you are stuck with shells facing the wrong way for loading. That is not fun!
  13. Chris, looking at Aug for a classifier match at CAPS. I am shooting the Rockcastle/AR15 ProAm that weekend so I am going to try to get someone to take over as MD and have it be a special classifier match. Will let you know. Tim Tim, is CAPS a club? If so, where is it? Sorry, been off for a few days for 3 gun match. Looks like Chris gave you the info. Thanks Chris
  14. Yep, actually it is Yulee. The USPSA club is SEPSA, and they have a 3 gun match most months with a 5th sat. Next one is in 2 weeks. I shoot there and am MD for the USPSA club inBrunswick. PM me about ranges in the area if you would like.

  16. There are some rules, but according to their site you can. Amtrak firearm policy
  17. [quote name= clicky It's not the easy trigger though. Requires fitting. True, you have to fit it, but once done they are are nice!
  18. I started out shooting a stock DPMS carbine for $850, cheaper if used. Made changes from there. First was a Miculek comp. then a JP trigger. Did some swapping with items from prize table for a Magpul CTR stock (would go with their new STR now) among other parts to use what I was taking off the DPMS to make another carbine. Went from there with a barrel, etc. Key is that just starting out I did not really know what I wanted. As I built I did so I did not make the mistakes of a heavy rifle, wrong length, etc. Very happy now!
  19. No FFL that will accept guns you order? Pawn shop with FFL? Lots of options most places and the guns are cheap enough online to cover shipping if your local FFL cannot get one on order. Another thread here was listing some online sources who have been consistently getting the JM versions.
  20. I read a post suggesting to cut down/shave the forehand and do something to the mag tube to enhance the gun for load two. Cannot find it now and was looking for more info specific to JM 930. It seems like I have to push my thumb and the shell further into the mag tube to get past the shell stop than on my 1100. Can I grind some of that area to make that faster and easier? What do I need to watch out for? thanks!
  21. I know that they posted and now have the "old" rule book with the changes from 2010, is USPSA looking at a full look at the rule book? I thought I had heard something about it, but nothing for sure.
  22. Thanks for the link, it was before my start in the sport (and of course before I was here at the forums) and I could not get an applicable one to come up in the searches I tried after you mentioned the previous post. Yes, I am an RO- newly minted this year so still learning the more intricate rules. I am also (still not sure how it happened the MD for the local match so I try to keep up on the these rule discussions- at least until they end up being 5 pages and longer! That is also why I try to never need the Level 1 exemptions (well, other than the 32 rounds on a rare mini-monster occasion), besides also making for better courses of fire. I do still take exception to the wording of the rule and am guessing an English teacher would back me about it, but since I am a Mathematics teacher and former soldier (neither necessarily known as English prof. material) I will have to put it to one of them later. Not to drag it out, but something like Level I matches may use shooting boxes, specify where/when specific target arrays may be engaged and specify mandatory reloads in short and medium courses only (not in a long course). In this case the and is separating individual actions within a list, rather than appearing to be a conjunction combining sentences. edit: Looks like Jim was posting as I was
  23. That is my reading of it due to the comma but would like to see it reworded either way. Part of it is logical in that it is the long courses that local clubs have problems with due to number of props and/or time to set up and tear down at some clubs (like mine- set up morning of and be done shooting and torn down by 1:30 so gun club can open for members). Not so much the problem with short and medium courses as far as props go. Either way, I try to limit myself to not doing it even at level 1, but it does limit my course design from time to time by not using the exemption. I got stepped on for this a while back. Somewhere here there is a thread on 1.1.5.1. The "not in a long course" only applies to mandatory reloads and not the L1 exemption. Or, that's what multiple people told me. Later, Chuck
