  1. Anyone have experience with Palmetto State Armory's barrels? I have been looking for a 16" mid length gas barrel to finish a 3-gun build. They have a stainless with Wylde chamber, 1 in 8" twist, target crown and threaded muzzle. Just have not heard anything about their barrels and did notsee much in a search. Thanks
  2. Yep, and like most above I have large, "thick" hands. Fingers are not long, but my palms are think. Perfect grip is nice and high and the slide barely touches but it does not take much to get a grip just slightly higher and get bitten.
  3. Yep, a bit more communication would have helped. I have no issue with using the Aug. classifications, only makes sense with the timing. This is the first I have heard that the competitors were notified and glad to hear that. That still leaves most of the membership not informed. At the very least, notify the club contacts and score uploaders! Our club and out sister club both ran Special Classifier matches that would have been included in the update. We could have let our shooters know about the update change. This time was particularly bad since we have so many new shooters (or shooters who joined USPSA since we were running the special match) who were anxiously looking for their initial classification. As MD, I have responded to quite a few emails this month about this. Commo- something that I think can be improved in general with USPSA (and one reason these forums are so important!).
  4. Ahg! I know better than to do anything BEFORE coming here and searcing! Had the shell plate bolt break on my SDB (thankfully with only about 30 rounds left in what I was running for the GA state champ.) and had to call for one. Like always, fast and free fix from Dillon- still need to order that spare parts kit though! My press is from 1993 and awhile back the tech. thought I might have been having problems with to much play due the old style bushings in the link arms and sent those. While talking to tech. this time they asked about the play in the "ram" and sent along new wave bearing. Had to strip it all down to replace and should have checked on the lube instructions then! Incidentally, what a difference the new wave bearings make. One of those things that wear out over time and you really don't notice the slight changes that build up. Thanks again Dillon.
  5. That is true, they are very involved with supporting us. I just looked and the Fire Control Kit is under $120 on the JP site. Compared to the cost of most other trigger set ups, that is great. And it is not just the adjustable trigger pull, the adjustable reset really lets you set it up the way you like. Plus you get (and can buy more) different power springs. The light one is the best but if you shoot a lot of "surplus" ammo with hard primers the other springs will help.
  6. Sounds like you are over towards the other side of the state, never really sure where central GA is We are over on the coast in Brunswick (CAPS- Coastal Area Practical Shooters) so a bit away from you. Be careful! First they get you started by pointing out that helping set up is a good way to learn about the game more quickly (which is true). The next thing is "Hey, how would you like to design a stage and set it up?" Yep, it helps you learn even more! Then a year goes by and somehow everyone is asking you questions and the Match Director or Club President title (or both!) has been tacked on to your name Ask me how I know Just kidding (sort of)- have fun, I am sure you will.
  7. I had been using a stock DPMS carbine and other than optic the first thing I had added was a Miculek compensator. That was a great add one, next was the trigger. I was able to get a JP fire control kit for under $100 and what a difference. They usually are something like 125 so far less than the drop in. This kit replaces the trigger, disconnector and springs but not the hammer. I may try that latter but really don't see a need. I was amazed at the difference. Takes a little adjustment but there is a video. The thing that stops some people is the part in the instructions about using a belt sander if needed to adjust the disconnector. I did not have to do that, dropped in, adjusted the set screws and done.
  8. Sort of what I did. Started out with a stock DPMS AP-4 carbine. Not the best for 3 gun but I can hit 10" plate out past 300 no problem. First added a red dot (just a Vortex Strikefire), then added the Miculek comp. (that made a difference- loud though!). Just before the last few local matches and the Rockcastle Pro/Am I added the JP trigger. That was a great addition! Easy enough to put in and such a difference! That was it. After the Rockcastle match I know that my next purchase will be a better optic, mostly 1-4x with illuminated dot. The doubler lets me hit fine out to 300+ but not spot the shots and since I have to leave it in through the whole match it makes the close in harder than they need to be. Was fine unless you had to shoot in the shadows or keep track of close in targets. The true 1x will be a lot better and the 4x let me. I also am in the process of picking up the other pieces (freefloat tube) to put together a better 3gun AR over time but those things listed above were enough to really get going.
  9. Have you done a function check? It was always a requirement have reassembling a M-16 or M-4. Little different with an AR since no full auto but here is a link Function Check. The key is that when you release the trigger after dropping the hammer and then charging it must be caught (audible and tactile "click") by the disconnector. If not then you that is not good! Not familiar with the trigger you used but on adjustable triggers you can go to far in the adjustment, usually a warning about that in the directions. On the JP triggers the set screws work together to make the adjustments and when right you have to loctite them. Could yours have moved during the firing?
  10. Hey Jimmy, remember they almost did not even call me until the girl drawing dug it out of the bottom Glad you all posted about Dakota. Every time I saw something about him on TV I had one of those feelings like you have crossed paths but did not see how. He put me on the 1000 yard target on the 4th shot (may have hit the very bottom on 3 but not sure- center hit on 4) and would have had me on the other guy's target with #5 if I had done my part with the tigger. I knew I pulled that one just high. First 1000 yard shot and the spotter was a Medal of Honor recipient! Wish I had known more about him at the time, but I am guessing that is not how he would have wanted it. Hope to be able to thank him some time in the future. Glad I did not miss this match!
  11. Welcome, I am about 30 miles south (north of Darien). Used to shoot at the range at the WMA up your way when I was at Stewart and after that when I lived in Hinesville. Member of Coastal Georgia Gun Club in Brunswick now and the USPSA match director there. Hey, think I just realized who this is. If so, don't need to go into all the stuff above- you have shot with us right? Did not connect the name and the email at first. Welcome to the board! Tim
  12. So the command "Range is clear" was not given? Then the Course of Fire was not over. If the shooter was not given the "If Clear, Hammer Down, Holster" command then 8.3.7 is not in effect so they are not prohibited from firing. 10.4.3 is for when loading, reloading or unloading so do not see it applying here and I don't see where any of the other situations under 10.4 apply so not an AD. So far not seeing anything where it was a DQ. Still not sure why the shooter drew for another sight picture on a 2nd string Question, was the RO wrong if they gave another "Make Ready" command since the course of fire was not starting. Should have gone straight to are you ready?
  13. Chris, the Aug special classifier match has been submitted. Should run with this month's update, usually is done by the 15th but just checked and not done yet. I think SEPSA would have had time to get theirs in as well. Tim
  14. Yep, waiting to hear that date as well! Also, remember that some of those "fancy" shirts are not pro but come from shooting other matches or clubs. Mine is from our USPSA club and the sponsors on it are actually sponsoring the club (who else but a Coastal Georgia club would have most of the shirt taken up by a hog and a mosquito Another consideration was time, an extra day for shooting Pro was just to much, two days off work was all I could swing. If I shoot Am next year I need a clinic on shooting AND a clinic on how to move up in the random draw. #30 shooting, dead last in random draw! But who cares, had a blast and can only go up from there in the draw.
  15. Funny, look at the effective date- 21 Sep. Day the Nationals start for Production!
  16. This match is a blast. Be ready for high round counts, Classic targets and lots of small steel at all ranges (read, long shots on small steel!). Draws a lot of shooters from out of the country. Luckily a 4 day weekend for me, will be shooting it for sure. Looks like your link is going to the international registration form that has stuff we don't have to deal with. Here is the link to the US resident form http://www.frankgarciausa.com/flaopen/2012FLORIDAOPEN.PDF and to the main page http://www.frankgarciausa.com/flaopen/main.html Like CZinSC said, normally it is either all day Fri. or you shoot Sat./Sun. If you shoot AM one day you shoot PM the other. That has been in the past, not up for squadding yet though.
  17. Only been at the game for about a year and a half and last year's GA state championship was my first Level II or above (just shot it again last Sat., sort of my anniversary I guess). In that time I guess the major match bug bit me, have shot 5 USPSA pistol level 2 and 3 matches, the pistol ProAm and two 3-gun matches. Just about all of them have been 5 hours away- either up towards Atlanta or down in Frostproof, FL. Furthest was the AR-15.com/Rockcastle 3 gun ProAm in Kentucky. An 11 hour drive and well worth it! Local matches are within an hour.
  18. And if you get on the email list or other communication from the local clubs you might hear about a Special Classifier match. That is a match that USPSA clubs sometimes do that has 6 classifier stages. Enough to get an initial classification in one match. Even if you don't get to shoot them regularly, stay in touch with those clubs. Tim

  20. I always figured some use the magwell on the Glocks for weight. I am putting together a 35 for Limited and the used gun I picked up had a heavyweight Dawson magwell on it. I have shot it a good deal lately in some shoot on the move training and for the first time in a match at the 3 gun ProAm. Have to day I like shooting it, but way heavier on the belt! With a long tungsten guide rod and the heavy weight magwell it really does add weight and is noticeable when shooting. Also, with my large hands the magwell forces me to get a higher grip on the draw. High enough that I am going to have a Southpaw do a beavertail along with the other grip work. Also, it really is easier to insert the mag.
  21. We us Palms, but have a lot who do not pre-register. Since I am the MD and also take care of reg. and scoring since the start of this year I do something similar. I print out 2 copies of the competitor list. These show the registered shooters and their info and the walk in numbers I have added to the Palms. I use one copy to record those who register and pay. If they pre-registered they pay me, I write it on the list and they check the other list on the clipboard to ensure everything is correct (Div, Maj/Minor, etc). Those who did not register are given one of the half-sheet registration forms to fill out before and then come back to me. When they do I check it over, take their money and give them their walk in number. I write their name and # on the list along with money paid and write the # on the reg. form. This way there are multiple recordings of the number and name when I get to doing the score. Makes my life easier in the end.
  22. This was asked a couple of times, but not addressed. I'd really like to know. Also asked and not addressed, putting / pulling a bullet out of front shirt pocket? If we are to bypass intent, and go by these strict interpretations, what about the following: At the unload and show clear, I tuck the mag under my chin while manipulating the gun with both hands? - Open? I am shooting a seated stage, accidentally hit the mag button, mag falls in lap, I grab it and put it back in the gun - Open? I have a jam, I rack the gun and a live round falls down the front of my shirt - open? I don't know of a rule that would cover having the mag in hand, and I cannot remember seeing anything like that says you cannot in the other threads. Of course I am not a lawyer so don't quote me!
  23. Aztecdriver- that is what I was thinking. Then looked at what OP had said the MD told him and it sure sounds like he was talking about the caliber. I just cannot believe that a MD would think that though.
  24. We used the conversions in M16s for years in the Army when we were stuck with indoor ranges stationed/deployed where nothing else was available, no problems. Just cannot see the slower, soft lead 22s doing any damage compared to the high pressure 5.56 jacketed. How many 1000s can you shoot thru a 22 without damage to the barrel? The bolt "carrier" is not reciprocating in the receiver (just the bolt part that rides on the conversion) and the chamber is protected by the insert that fits in the from the unit. I use one in my carbine now (with Miculek comp)and have never seen any issues with leading, fouling or wear. At the local steel match it is common for shooters to shoot their pistol and then a 2nd gun, most often either a 22pistol or carbine. I throw the Ceiner kit in mine and get some practice on transitions in the match. I find that at those ranges the 22 hits 1" lower than the 5.56 (but remember that with a 200yd zero, the ARs shoot about 2 1/2" below the POA at these close ranges) and I do NOT change my sight setting. Pros- Cheaper, can use the exact same gun as you compete with/normally shoot, uses the same optic (big deal if you use a relatively expensive optic). Uses the same good competition trigger (of course a dedicated upper does do this as well) While the recoil is not exactly the same, 5.56 with a good comp is pretty much recoil free and I can work short in targets just about the same with either setup Cons- "might" lead the barrel or comp, not the most accurate with 22s. but plenty good out to 25 yds for practice.
  25. 3 of us posting at once! One thing about the rules forum, don't usually have to wait long to get an answer
