  1. They also mentioned Dillon in the credits that rolled at the end of the episode. I've also noticed a tendency to assert the ability to prove a negative with a single example.
  2. I've been disappointed at their testing of myths where the answer is obvious, or where the issues could be figured out by high school physics (like the "bullet curving" test). I'm also annoyed at the way they sanitize the show - any brand of anything, even a logo on a model railroad engine, is blurred and they treat even basic information everyone either knows, or can easily find out, like the composition of thermite as if it's some sort of big secret only professional myth ninjas can be trusted with. There's also the idiocy of having the pregnant mythbuster in close proximity to firing guns. Perhaps they need to test the myth that sound travels through the uterus and can reach the fetus at a damaging level. They could even use the paper involving sheep and inter-uterine probes as a starting point for their test. The myth would be confirmed. Those folks should get themselves an explosives license rather than perpetuate the myth that one cannot safely blow stuff up without a badge .
  3. If you get your brain surged you want the tech to use disposable tools - even an autoclave does not destroy the CJD prions.
  4. ALWAYS leave a couple of empty slots in one of your ammo boxes in case TSA finds a loose round in your shooting bag at baggage check. Doing so would have saved me an hour waiting for two TSA staffers on site, one at the other end of the phone, one airline representative and one police officer try to figure out what to do with the stray round (which was eventually donated to the airline, although they did offer to store it for me until my return).
  5. If you ask nicely, and they have the time, you just might score a tour of the Dillon factory (perhams PM'ing Dillon this forum would help set something up). The tour of the factory (including the model room where they make target drones, the Minigun setup, and the hanger for the Dillon air force is based) followed by a visit to the Scottsdale gun club (very close to the factory) was a high point of my Arizona trips.
  6. I'd guess that many of the people who make a living by being excellent shooters don't get paid just for "shooting", but have been able to use that name recognition to open up other opportunities. Dave Sevigny is a great shooter and is also the kind of person who any company should be proud to have in front of the public representing their organization. Ditto for Julie Goloski and a few others I can think of. Both of these people have significant responsibilities in their employment that go far beyond "professional shooter". I expect that Max Michel, who recently joined Sig, will have job duties that go beyond that of "professional shooter". Others have used their match wins to open opportunities to do training that would otherwise be closed. I know of some GM's without any LEO or military background who get paid by the US and friendly foreign government to teach people how to shoot. I don't know of any crucible outside of USPSA/IPSC competition where persons who have never "lived tactical for real" obtained the credibility to teach shooting tactics to the US military and three letter agencies. I doubt that Golf of NFL pros are given corporate assignments other than play their game, make commercials, and do in person appearances. Winning every match in sight can be a great door opener, but the number of people who get paid to shoot without having any other job responsibilities can probably be counted on one hand (without using your thumb).
  7. I fixed a bug in the code last night which was marking some entries as "Accepted" rather than "waitlist paid". Correcting the entries with the improper display resulted in them going back into the queue of "Waiting" people and impacted the statistics displayed to the user. The good news (for those of you on the waiting list) is that there are a number of people who have signed up on the waitlist but not paid for slots. As soon as I get the OK from USPSA HQ, I'll set the system up to disable these (and remove them from the waitlist count) after they are unpaid for a period of time to be determined by USPSA (a few days at most). Once this happens, I expect everyone will see a jump up a few places. I am absolutely certain there has been no "manual insertion" of people into the waiting list. The database records are timestamped, sequenced numbered with a record ID, and there is a separate log of manual actions taken by USPSA staff. The system, by design, makes it very hard to "sneak something in". Absolute consistency in how people are treated has been a goal of USPSA as well as myself, and we have succeeded - though it sometimes disappoints people who feel they should have an "exception" to published policy. The upside is that system is as transparent as possible - the downside is that things like glitches in the display code are hard to hide.
  8. You really need to crank a few numbers to determine if lump sum or all at once makes sense: What is the discount rate applied to the funds when calculating the lump sum? In some cases, the discount rate APR is much higher than can be earned on any safe investment. Who is responsible for paying you? The full faith and credit of the state, the credit of an quasi independent agency, or a third party investment house from which the state bought the annunity? What are the survivorship rights - does the 20 years get paid no matter what, or end when you die? What are the tax implications of all at once vs. annuitized. If you live in a state with an income tax, but plan on moving to a state without one, the yearly payout could save 5% or more (over 10% in NY state, due to their graduated income tax) How fast do you plan on spending it down? If you have stage IV cancer or have had three bypasses and want to spend it all before you die, you will need to take a lump sum and get busy. How much does Mike Dillon want to sell you one of his transferrable miniguns?
  9. Fixed. I was working on the SC signup page last night and FTPed the file to the wrong directory.
  10. My guess is that they do a significant amount of business supplying shops in their semi-local region and do not wish to compete with their customers.
  11. Too bad about the $1K insurance limit. Some homeowners policies have a "firearms limit", however, there are those that limit it specifically to "loss by theft". If you have a bunch of guns in a safe, you may want to check your policy:). It's also interesting that none of the gun safe companies use UL for fire ratings - those always seem to come from a different lab.
  12. Remember, there are two different uploads: 1. Match results 2. Classification data They are separate so that local matches may make the usual corrections (wrong division, incorrect member number, etc.) before uploading the classifier report.
  13. AAARGH!!!!! There is no reason they can't be uploading on-line. The system will either take a credit card, or allow the user to submit a check with minimal paperwork (Wrting the club code and classifier transaction # in the memo field on the check is sufficient).
  14. I assume the Orleans is gun friendly since that's where Kim negotiated the group rate for USPSA. It's a great deal ($43 on the weekdays, which is really about $60 after mandatory fees and taxes). I have not been able to find any NV law against CHL (If you find one, please add it to this thread), and NV is now very generous with reciprocity. The signs at the Stratosphere cite a law under which persons possessing or carrying guns will allegedly be prosecuted, but it's just a general trespass statute, not something specifically dealing with guns.
  15. Wrong order, as John's rulings are the ones that count.
  16. Clerk: "This isn't a gun, you don't need a 4473. See, it doesn't even have a serial number" Me: Yes it does - look here (pointing to serial number 38SUPER on a stripped SVI widebody frame) Clerk: "No, that's the caliber." Me: "How about if I fill out a 4473 and you give it to the boss and have him figure out if you need it". Clerk: "OK" (followed by some BS about how well he knows the folks at the factory)
  17. Vegas hotels (at least the big ones) are remarkable consistent in following some business practice unique to that city Significant charge for receiving a package or envelopes Surchage for internet (as sitting your room using the internet is considered stealing from the casino) Closing the hotel at about 6PM (same reason) A mandatory "resort fee" that allows them to quote rooms for $5 below the actual rate they charge You may find a smaller hotel that will accept packages without charge, but I expect all of the big strip hotels will follow the standard Vegas customs.
  18. If you think guns might make them nervous, they probably already know you're a doc - tell them you need the machine because you are working on a new colonoscopy rectal probe.
  19. If you're really confident about the purchase of the house going through, and you have completed all inspections so that you know you are not going to get surprises like repair requirements that necessitate seller concessions, you could offer the seller an additional deposit towards the purchase of the house that he can keep to have the Bridgeport moved if you do not complete the sale. (That's what I would require if I were the seller).
  20. I'd try to rent the stall from the seller at your new house. You may increase the changes of getting a yes if you tell him you don't need a key or access until after you close on the house.
  21. Only if you want to shoot really heavy (77 grain) bullets.
  22. Interesting illustration at www.mrbulletfeeder.com. Do they now have a setup where the feeder attached directly to the press so you don't have to use up table space with the toilet bowl ring (an excellent and creative use of a readily available part for the mounting system).
  23. How about a description of what the project involved, what you used to refinish the gun, etc. ?
  24. Blued or stainless steel are additional choices with SVI. I believe STI is Aluminum only for their metal grips.
