  1. I personally prefer the Dawson Precision fibre optic front sight. Since I use my M&P for competition I went with the .100" width. I suggest giving them a call to confirm the correct height for a stock pistol. I also replaced my factory rear sight with a Dawson adjustable rear. Can't say enough good things about their sights. I recently replaced the front sight on my Shield using a rented the MGW tool from Speed Shooters Specialty. You can rent the tool and purchase the sight all for the cost of the tool.
  2. No prep work required. Just dump the primers into a container and when the container is full, take it to the scrap yard.
  3. I attended this years S&W IDPA indoor nationals and shot CDP rather than spending the money to buy 10 round magazines for my M&P. I would have much prefered to use the M&P but just didn't want the mag capacity hassle. Fortunately for my son, he enjoys shooting revolvers so shooting ESR worked just fine for him. I considered the purchase of magazine blocks from Magazineblocks.com. Another local shooter who also attended the match, tried the mag blocks but reported that the gun did not go to slide lock with the mag blocks installed. So that option was put on hold. Since you need 5 or 6 magazines to help insure a smooth flow for the match, purchasing 5 or 6 magazines (10 round) becomes an expensive proposition. In addition it seems difficult to find anyone who stocks the 10 round magazines. The mag blocks at $5 or $6 each seemed a cost effective solution, although since the mag blocks were not permanetly epoxied the into the magazine, the mag is still technically illegal by Mass. law. You would hope that in the event of being caught with the technically illegal magazines the police and the courts would recognize your attempt to comply with the state laws, but common sense and gun laws don't seem to go hand in hand. I had considered not attending the match, but really wanted to try my hand at a national match. You would think that S&W could exert some political pressure to find a way to get the state lawmakers to issue temporary magazines exemptions for the people attending the match. Another thought is to have the NRA include a clause in their quest for a national CCW standard, relating to magazine capacity exclusions for people traveling to and from, and participating in, sanctioned matches. It's so nice to envision a perfect world.
  4. Depending on your business destination, you might want to consider staying in PA. From the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton area) you are an hours drive to North Jersey. From the Lehigh Valley you can get to USPSA matches it Lower Providence and Ontelaunee, and can find an IDPA match within a half hours drive almost every weekend. If you are going to be in the area the last weekend of June you might want to check out the "Beast of the East" IDPA match at Easton Fish & Game. I have heard good things about the matches at Old Bridge and Shongum, but never strayed that far into Jersey with my guns. Keep an eye on the NJ gun laws, I just heard that there is a renewed interest in limiting magazine capacity to 10 rounds. I'm not sure where this proposed legislation stands.
  5. The Hodgdon web site lists 4.4 grains of 231 with a 180 grain Berry's bullet at 872 FPS. You only need to make 695 fps for minor with a 180 grain bullet. I have found that 3.5 grains of WW231 makes minor in my M&P and my 610 with a 180 grain Bayou bullet. I would expect that you will need to add another tenth of a grain or two to compensate for the plated bullet versus the poly coated bullets. I am currently working on developing a major load.
  6. I have never used Zero bullets, so I can't offer a direct comparison between Zero and X-treme, but I have used X-treme and been very pleased with them. In fact, the spotty availability is what has kept me from trying the Zero bullets. I highly recommend the x-treme bullets.
  7. There must be something wrong with my Premier II, it's been flawless since I bought it 6 years ago. Near as I can figure it's well over 150 matches without so much as a slight hickup. Not one FTF, not one FTE. Not to mention countless practice sessions. And it loves those 200 grain SWC's that choke most every other 1911.
  8. Another vote for 3.4 grains of WW231 at 1.135. It kept my Trojan running great.
  9. I tried a pair of the Radian at home plugs (available from Cabela's) and found them to be OK. A few months later, I got a custom set made at a match. I quickly realized why the custom made plugs cost a little more. Better noise reduction. The lady making the custom plugs inserted a foam stop further back in each ear canal, and she was therefore able to force more material into the ear canal when molding the plugs. The custom molded plugs cost $50, and took about 15 minutes to set up.
  10. Got my spring from Speed Shooters Specialty. I think I went with a 13 pound spring. You will notice that the ejector face (the surface that contacts the case)is angled, just take a file and file that face so as to give it less of an angle. That should have some effect on the direction of the case. As I noted previously, I saw a much bigger difference when I changed to a lighter recoil spring. JMike, No I only post under one name. I believe you have me confused with someone else. Unless there is another fat, bald, stunningly handsome guy calling himself Cuzinvinny.
  11. Which direction ore you trying to move the sight? If I recall it needs to be pushed to the right (ejection port) side of the slide in order to remove the sight. Try to borrow or consider renting a sight pusher.
  12. Changing the angle on the ejector helped a little. Changing the recoil spring (went to a lighter weight spring, but can't remember the weight) did the trick.
  13. I have the Tech-well SP on my Trojan, and can't say enough goods things about that magwell. I have had exceptionally good results with both Wilson ETM magazines as well as the Tripp magazines.
  14. Is revolver limited to 6 shot, or can the 8 shooters participate. Are red dot optics allowed in revolver?
  15. My vote goes to the Techwell XT. http://www.techwearusa.com/techwell_system.asp
  16. I have had great results during hunting season using a handwarmer/muff with the chemical hot packs inside. I'm planning on taking it for a match on Sunday morning. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Under-Armour174-Dead-Calm-Handwarmer/1381023.
  17. Why not the classifieds here on Brian Enos? I have had great luck with everything I have ever purchased from the classifieds here.
  18. I was experiencing the same problem with my .40 FS. It was about 6" low at 25 yards even after going to a .155 X .100 front sight. I went with the Dawson adjustable rear and .265 X .100 front and couldn't be happier. I have to disagree with the advice than says aim over the target. You can't get a precise sight picture using that method. Either change out the front sight to a lower height, or better yet go with the adjustable rear and a new front sight to go with it.
  19. I was using the Pachmayr decelerators on my 627 and using the factory Hogue's on my 610. I found that I liked the Hogue grips better. I found them to be more comfortable and they gave me a more consistent grip. Now both guns wear the factory Hogue grips. One of the top local revolver shooters really likes the X-frame grips and he uses them on all of his N frames. One nice feature of the X frame grips is the fact that they were designed to help tame the recoil of the 500 and 460, so they should help with the recoil of the .45. I may see if I can borrow a set just to try them out.
  20. I like my North Mountain moonclip holder. I use it for my 610 and my 627. If mine broke, I'd simply order another. I'm thinking you might check to see if you can order the Kydex portion only and reuse the existing tec-loks and posts.
  21. I personally prefer adjustable sights so I can adjust the point of impact in relation to my sight picture as well as my specific load. I can make due with fixed sights, but much prefer the adjustable sights.
  22. When you contact S&W, be sure to discuss the topic of their returning the action to its original factory configuration. I seem to remember seeing posts from people who sent guns back to the factory for work, only to have the factory send the gun back with the action returned to its original factory configuration. It would be a shame to have the custom action job undone by the factory.
  23. $800 for a $900 gun is roughly a 12% savings, which seems pretty fair to me, provided the gun is in like new condition. If your price point is $750, you make an offer of $750. Right now guns are a hot commodity. If someone is selling for 25% off the original purchase price, the gun is probably in less than ideal condition, and is truly worth 25% less than when it was new. While 12% isn't the deal you are looking for, someone else may be thrilled at saving 12%. I have watched items for sale figuring that if I waited a few more days, the seller would be more receptive to a lower offer, only to have someone buy the item at the sellers original price. You also need to remember that Gunbroker is always another selling option, and not all the buyers on GB are as knowledgeable of gun or accessory values are the people who frequent this site. It is often times easier to sell a used item at the same cost as new when the buyer really doesn't know the market, and I have seen more people overpay for items on GB than I ever thought possible.
  24. I can't say for sure, but I would think that there is a CR Speed model that would fit the model 41. You might even check on the double Alpha racemaster.
  25. My Baer has made it through every match I have ever entered without any problems. No FTF's no FTE's, no problems. I don't baby it with any of those round nose bullets, nothing but 200 grain SWC's, that choke most other 1911's.
