    929 ?

My son bought one that ran right out of the box, but he seems to be in the minority. I thought about a 929 but I'm past those days of tinkering with my guns. I want something that runs right out of the box (OK, with a little tuning). With all of the negative that I have read, and heard about. I decided to stick with my 627. I even thought about a 986 for steel, but talked with another steel league member who has problems with that model as well.
  2. Find a local Wiley X dealer, and have the lenses cut there. I went to a local chain who is a Wiley X distributor and they had the lenses on stock. They cut and installed them in the insert in about 15 minutes. Since this chain participates with my vision plan, the charge for the new lenses was minimal.
  3. I use 4.2 grains of WW 231 under a Bayou 160 grain RN bullet. When used in my 5" 627 PC I get a 133 PF. OAL is 1.500. I haven't had any issues with unburned powder.
  4. The loctite seems to have solved the problem. Thanks for the tip.
  5. Yes the adjustable portion moves, as I use the press. I will try tightening the allen screw at the bottom of the insert.
  6. I'm having issues with the micrometer powder insert for my Hornady LNL. As I operate the press the bottom portion of the micrometer moves. Sometimes it will move as much as 3 ticks per 50 rounds. Is anyone else experiencing this problem and has anyone found a cure?
  7. I stick with the line from one of the Dirty Harry movies " A man's got to know his limitations" so I always have someone else work on my guns. I've never been much on patience and now that the eyes aren't nearly as sharp as they were years ago, it's the best way to go for me.
  8. While not the preferred bullet nor powder, I have found 3.3 grains of WW231 under a 180 gr Bayou TC bullet to work very well in my 610. Accurate, and no unburnt powder gumming up the cylinder..
  9. I much prefer the Pledge of Allegiance, it gets everyone involved. One of our local IDPA matches does that prior to the match. I would like to see the pledge recited before all matches.
  10. This weeks Shooting USA had a segment regarding the Performance Center. The segment talked about the major investment S&W recently made at the PC shop. Some new CNC machines and a new coordinate measuring machine. Apparently S&W has been outsourcing some of their PC work. The new machines will help bring that work back under S&W's roof. Perhaps threads like this helped spur S&W into action.
  11. I actually load a little longer at 1.135" over 3.5 grains of WW231. No problems in my M&P full size or my M&P Shield.
  12. Go to Gun Goddess .com - You can search under "Shop for men" or "Shop for women" Under the shop for men catagory it looks like 25 different color options, women's option may provide even more colors. http://www.gungoddess.com/adjustable-inside-the-waistband-holster-customize-it/
  13. I am loading the 160 gr Bayou with 4.2 gr. of WW231 for a velocity of 828 FPS (133 power factor) same OAL of 1.500"
  14. Does anyone manufacture aftermarket recoil springs for the M&P shield? Has anyone used a Glock recoil spring in their shield as a replacement for the factory spring? I would like to try a recoil spring that is lighter than the factory spring.
  15. I currently live in Eastern PA, and can easily get to an IDPA, USPSA, ICORE, or steel match in less than one hour. PA is a "shall issue" state, however I worry about the encroachment of ridiculous gun laws from New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. The state is quite rural with the exception of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and more recently the Allentown area. The problem here is the democrat leanings of those 3 metropolitan areas, since they carry a bigger electorate. A big factor for me, as I approach retirement age, is the cold winters, and the accompanying snows. I recommend going south for the warm weather. Florida is quite appealing, although depending on the tax ramifications, the Carolina's are worth a look.
  16. I think the gentlemen you met today is full of bologna. You can always ask him to order one for you, just to prove he can really make it happen, and since the 610's typically sell for $1000 to $1200, you could even turn a quick profit if he is actually able to get you a 610 for $800.
  17. Another low tech solution. It is a plastic jar from some sort of a dietary supplement. Holds 7 loaded 38 special moon clips (8 rounds) per layer, stacks 4 layers high. Fits into the range bag with room to spare.
  18. I like to work on some of the skills that don't get used very often but always seem to show up at major matches, such as support hand only and strong hand only. I also like to double check my point of aim, especially where head shots are concerned.
  19. Another vote for the shooting chrony Beta. I use it to insure that my loads make power factor, and it's never let me down.
  20. I have used 2 different loads at a sanctioned match. I made sure I sent both to the chrono check. At the time I was shooting lead bullets for the majority of my shooting, but wanted to use a plated bullet for an indoor low light (more correctly - no light) stage that required you to use a flashlight.
  21. Some sort of a vibratory mechanism helps. I use an old fish tank pump taped to the side of the powder funnel. I got the idea here http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=174388&hl=%2Bvibrator#entry1928553. I also read something fairly recent about a small vibrator that Radio shack sells, but I seem to recall that it required some knowledge of electronics in order to hook it up. I guess as a last resort you could trek on down to the local adult gift shop and ask which model works best with Clay's.
  22. I'll be purchasing components within the next few days. I've been well aware that swingers, out and backs, and other assorted moving targets are my real weak point. I have also been thinking about how to make a smaller version for dry fire. I kept thinking I would need a pillow block bearing to facilitate the swinging motion, since most full size swingers that I have seen rely on these bearings. Just attended a tier 2 match this weekend where I tanked the stage with 3 simotaneous swingers. Another tier 2 match in a few weeks. I better get hustling so I can practice. Great idea. Keep us posted if you build any other types of moving targets for dry fire.
  23. Has anyone used the Hornady Lock-N-Load Powder Measure Rifle Micrometer Metering Assembly for bulky handgun powders. I find that the handgun metering insert, due to it's small diameter, isn't very consistent with certain powders. I use an old fish tank pump taped to the powder measure,to help vibrate the powder down into the small insert opening especially when using Clay's and Trailboss. I'm considering the purchase of the rifle insert in an effort to get more consistent powder charges with the bulkier powders, and without the pump.
  24. Sarge nailed it. Making sure your loads meet the required power factor for whatever game you are playing.
  25. Go to http://www.gttargets.com/targetsandbases.htm this site will get you started with some ideas. At least 3 targets - since most steel challange stages consist of 5 targets I suggest using 5 as a minimum Pistol and rifle (up to 7mm Rem Mag)- I don't have any experience with rifles so I'll pass on this question What sizes and shapes (square or round, with or without ears) are good for what range? (up to 200 yards)- How challenging do you want to make it. I use 8 " square plates (3/8" thick) for handguns out to about 35 yards. Shapes may be more a result of what you ca find from a local fab shop or scrap yard. If the fab shop has drops from a job that they are running and they don't need to do any additional cutting they may give you a pretty good deal. If you want 10" round plates and the have 14" round drops that need to be cut to 10 diameter for you the cost is going to increase dramatically. What thickness and weight for different sizes/shapes. - For non magnum hand guns I suggest 3/8" plate What type of stand for weight capacity and quickness of set up and take down as well as transport. Our local club has stands which belong to the club and are always available for member use. They are made of 3/4 or 1" diameter rebar. They have 3 legs at the bottom with a center stem welded to each of the 3 legs. The top of the stem has a hook welded on. The plates have a hole that fits over the hook. Take a look at the top picture http://steelshooters.com/ Good price suppliers. Commercial targets are available but will be expensive. A local fab shop or scrap yard is a much cheaper alternative.
